Yes, Porcupinefish belong to Diodontidae, a separate but closely related clade to the rest of the pufferfish Tetraodontidae, but as I am a marine zoologist, I tend to just use layman terms so nobody calls me a pedant. 🙃

Despite the cute face and puppy personality don't be tempted to hand feed them, that beak inside the mouth will take a finger if they miss if they are big enough.

Stressing out or angering a porcupine fish is never a good idea, no matter how much you want to see them puffed up. Not only are their spines dangerous, but they actually have beak-like teeth and a very powerful bite. This one was really cool to see, I've never seen one so big!
I had one of these as a pet when I was a kid. He started out about golf ball sized, and ended up about the size of a football. Very charismatic and social, he behaved a lot like a dog. We fed him krill by hand, and he loved gentle pats. The only negative was that he systematically killed all the other fish in the tank 💀 Thanks for all the memories, Gary ❤
Looked it up, mine was a tropical balloon fish. Looks similar to the porcupine fish in the video, and was equally friendly. Are balloon fish and porcupine fish considered pufferfish?

Yeah some even say that’s not it’s name but it’s legit it’s name all it does is take the littlest bit of research to confirm it’s a real thing. It’s not a puffer fish. They’re smaller and I believe contain a deadly neurotoxin whereas this doesn’t.
