This is the best instruction on blending I've seen! That life like, photographic look is exactly what I'm after in my portraits. I do decently but not at your quality. I'll be trying out your suggestions to see how I fair with them...hopefully, I'll much improvement. Usually a smooth paper but perhaps I should try a courser paper instead.

Thank you so much! I use Canson 1557, 180gsm. It's a smooth drawing paper, but it's cold pressed, so it has some texture (but considered smooth) the smoothest paper would be hot pressed paper.
I don't use white charcoal (actually that's white pastel, charcoal always black) because when I spray it with fixative at the end, it's fading. So I just keep the paper clean from graphite right from the beginning (constantly erasing throughout the drawing process)
In this video I am literally drawing with only 2 pencils, 4B mechanical pencil and 8B pencil. That's it. The blender is needed to blend values between 4B to 8B. 😀😀😀

Thank you so much! IMO Coarser paper is easier because you don't need to shade perfectly but it'll look smooth if you shade evenly.

I have a question:how do you know if a picture needs to be drawn with graphite or charcoal oencil
It's totally up to you. Graphite is more common, and not everyone has charcoal, but the result is kinda the same.

Yes, fixative from Winsor & Newton, then store it to a binder / inside my sketchbook / frame it.
