    Oh yeah, poncho is the thing! Small size, multiple uses, light weight... just throw one in the backpack and forget it's there until you need it! It has saved me more than once when sudden storm came by and I was outdoor. Thanks for showing all the purposes for it.

    You can light a small tea candle inside one of those (safely!), while you are sitting stationary for a while, and it becomes a portable sauna. If you were trying to avoid being seen the light emitted inside the poncho would most likely not even be visible. Certainly not compared to an exposed candle/flame/lighter, and certainly not from a decent distance away. An unfortunate fall through the ice, or get swamped in the cold with water otherwise, and this could save your life. They are an unbelievably versatile item. Can set it up like a decoy for evasion, a boat sail...take a dump in private - even if folks are right there in front of ya'!! So many applications! Crazy to go hiking/camping/bushwhacking without one.

    man im learning so much, to the water catching technique all the way to USING fricken grasss to insulate more. dry straws in winter would be perfect. also a poncho with a liner is godly if its FREEEZIN COLD in winter -40, youd put that over your actual snowoutfit. stay kozy. even when ur supposed to be dead at those temps out all day.

      Also the floatation device was a tarp and not a poncho. I think a poncho might be to small to wrap up a small pack and have it water tight. With the hood and the fact that the poncho is about 60 inches wide, you might make it halfway across the lake.

  • @RayDAider1

    Good tips here. I always use my poncho as a ground cloth underneath a tarp shelter, then a Klymit air mattress, the the poncho liner/woobie on top of that. That's what I sleep on...Then a wool blanket or two over me as cover...then a suspended bug net....I'm all set.

    When making a hooch from a poncho with a gooseneck, pin the four corners down first but a little loosely, then tie the goose neck to the overhead branch or crawl underneath with a stick for a center pole. Don’t forget to add foliage and grass/detritus off the ground to increase camouflaged effectiveness. When I was in the 82d we’d have cordage already on the poncho for tying it out. We almost never actually wore the ponchos, except maybe on guard duty at Bragg if that was declared the uniform.

    • @evelbill1439
      @evelbill1439 2 года назад +1

      To put branches of leaves over the poncho hooch put the thick branch thru the loop of the center tie-off to support the weight above the poncho hooch not on it, to avoid tearing it and to make the most room underneath.

      Me too! One in my backpack and another in the butt-pack I keep loaded for overnighters and SHTF. Redundancy is good!! Never hurts to have a spare for someone in need, too.

      Have you tried the Russian Plash Palatka 6Sh120 tarp? They had thought of everything when they made that tarp. Very durable, lightweight, it has a handgrip to use as a stretcher, and multiple tarps can even be stitched together with paracords to make a larger tarp.

    1,You can tie 2 trekking poles to the poncho on the ground to become a slingback chair
    2,tie your poncho both end to a tree and becomes a hammock chair😅

    I haven't needed my milsurp poncho in an emergency situation but the single use plastic ponchos that cost about a buck sure has . They are about the size of a pack of smokes so there's no excuse for not having one .
