- A non-broadcast documentary (made just for fun) filmed during a 2010 expedition led by Stewart McPherson in search of new species of carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes).
In this 23 minute film, Stewart McPherson travels to the island of Palawan in the Philippines, to climb a previously unexplored mountain. Along the journey, in uncharted territory, Stewart finds evidence of a little known tribe, a newly discovered carnivorous sundew (Drosera ultramafica) and a brand new species of carnivorous pitcher plant (which he later named Nepenthes leonardoi).
A full account of the discovery of Nepenthes leonardoi and many other spectacular new Nepenthes species is provided in the recently published book title New Nepenthes Volume 1 (available from Redfern Natural History).
Filmed by Greg Bourke.
This guy is great, a true adventurer not afraid to tackle difficult conditions with minimum carbon footprint. Amazing how resilient he is wearing simple clothes in difficult terrain.
Wow, Fantastic video. Being able to explore terrains untouched by man and discovering new species????? One helluva adventure. Stewart McPherson, you are the man. My congratulations to you. Mike from Miami.
That largest pitcher reminds me of a coffee tumbler. 😂😂😂
Such a good informative video. Its so good because you’re not just talking about plants, it’s about everything. You shed light on the terrain you’re on and Alot more. It’s a well rounded video. Just imagine if you had a real documentary with high tech cameras! I mean well done.
Stewart, you have the chops to step into the shoes of Sir David Attenborough. Keep up the good work. Did you identify the orange crab? I like crustaceans so I was curious.
Thats what i thought! Brilliant videos, very well spoken, please keep up the work!
I also thought of David Attenborough the moment he arrived at the large stone :)
Here you are hun. Geosesarma aurantium
That crab 🦀 was adorable.
These are probably vampire crabs "geosesarma". I keep Geosesarma black leg myself
I'm from Philippines and from that place I have never tried to go to unexplored area because my grandparents forbids me and many places with pitchers have tribal conflicts and arm conflicts (I'm surprised by that crab too) 😳😱☺️
3:02 that's Nepenthes lowii. Apparently it gains its nutrition not from insects but from squirrel shit and that photo just proves it.
slateflash we don’t have squirrels though
apdroid geek Yes there are endemic squirrels in Palawan.
Nice discovery. I'm glad you noticed a SunDew (my favorite carnivorous plant type). By the way, that hike looked miserable.
id love to hike it
This guy is so cool!
absolutely fantastic.. ive been to brookspoint which is about 50 miles from where u are in the video.. the palawan mountain tribal people would bring there produce they would grow down to a market near brooks point.. there were resturant owners from Manila present to purchase their goods.. 3 hour bus ride to puerto princesa. then an hour and 1/2 flight return to Manila
I would hope they also digest the mosquito larvae but I would guess probably not. Love viewing all of your videos.
I absolutely love this RUclips page, it fuels my hunger for learning about plants
I bought a picher plant once from a orchid store ,on tha way home out poped a frog i caught tha frog and carried both frog and plant back home i placed tha tree frog in a 20gallon tank with a fire belly toad at itz botom i named that frog justian i lived 8-10 years and depending on tempertures or mood it would change itz colours from green to brown to bright blue ,amazing i called that store and asked if they usualy end wit aniamal stoaways ,they said this waz the first time they heard of thiz happtening ,i think tha pitcher plant waz from hawaii it eaz moastly green wit a little pink to red on tha top and red on tha ridge on itz botton edge
Did you film a tide commercial after this?
lol, actually looking untidy on camera is good for a real terrain explorer. Unlike those journalists explorers that look like they have not explored shit.
wow its amazing in the philippines it my home country wow beautiful
Really appreciate your documentaries. I have been interested in carnivorous plants ever since I discovered my first Sarracenia purpurea here in Canada. I have worked as a naturalist/researcher since my early experiences. Thanks.
Fascinating upload! Thank you for the adventure!
Selecta ice cream......kahit saan, kayang puntahan....

This is awesome. How do shows like Diggers get viewers??? Way more interesting

Man I love your books, At school we do this thing called 'Reading For Pleasure' And I pick your books all the time now, With a buddy and he loves them too. You rock man!!!
Especially Incredible Earth that is the best one I have read do far.
I do wounder if u name any of the new species u discover
Those are crazy 😲 I'm so mind blown but damm knowing all this now I don't know if those guys are safe in the wild many people tend to get those and sell em.. specially in remote areas for easy money.... I'm thankful that it's discovered but I'm also praying that it's gonna be more dangerous to get to those guys.
How much for leonardoi nê địa pen-thet huh Stewart ? Bọn Mọi ở Châu Á họ xin tôi Tiền _ tôi thấy là nên mua gì đó và trả tiền thì tốt hơn . Hình như, tôi thấy cái địa chỉ của bạn củng mua & bán thực vật. Nice adventure !! =]]
Rest in peace Leonardo! Plus that's a lovely crew right there xD I wonder if there's a cameraman following him around the forest :D
This is an amazing RUclips channel! Keep exploring and learning! Love learning about botany and environments and places I know little to nothing about. Discovering and sharing knowledge and saving habitat of plants and animals is very important. Way more Important than the new iPhone or gaming system. Without the science behind why plants and animals evolve the way they do we wouldn’t know how important micro climates and untouched areas are to the health of the planet. Diversity is key. We dump money into bullshit when we should be spending money on exploration and learning.
That’s proper backpacking hiking and exploring looking for something exciting
Philippines 🌿🌱
Any body suggest similar plant RUclips channels 🤗
Use a wireless lav microphone! Can hardly hear you when you are speaking infront of the camera .
If the mountain has no name, someone should name it
Anyone
I am amaze will your dedication in finding new species of nepenthes in our country
Wow! Pitcher plants in natural habitat are really beautiful!
Congratulations on your amazing new discovery. L
I would be so miserable in that environment, wow.

Welcome to my village / Meghalaya - Bangladesh Border.
there are plenty of pitcher plants and rare orchids and species. the place is incredibly beautiful.
Trick to stop blood from bleeding is found at the pet store. They use It for parrots etc because if they bleed they don’t have coagulants and bleed out so they make a powder for that. Try it next jungle expedition for leeches. I remember having it with my step dads parrot and it is supposed to help blood clot in wounds
Well.. Actually here in the Philippines you can get some plants.. Even the wild ones...but not the endangered plants
My Aunt use to grow pitcher plants in their back yard in the province of Laguna, back then, I never knew it's true value, so like any playful kid would do, i placed all sorts of things inside the pitchers 😂
This video made me wanna visit Palawan. Who knew there are sundews on this Island. I never even knew that sundews can grow in the wild here in the Philippines.
incredible
driiiiiiink it..... drink the pitcher juice
To think that there are still undiscovered species
I want to go exploring for Nepenthes with Stewart! Looks really hard and fun simultaneously.
The construction they got over there in the mountain is better quality than the new build they have in the UK
Thanks for your interesting video exploration. While you are out there looking in remote places, can you keep an eye out for any signs of a relic hominid please? Love Nepenthes by the way, have a few or at least one indigenous to Australia. Lovely tribute at the end and a fitting name given for the new species.
He sounded so much like Ramsay XD

Perhaps, ‘discover’ is too grandiose of a term, perhaps , ‘document’ is most likely the correct term
is there at India ??
Priston Philippines
you never discover shit.you just name shit
1:39 NOT IN PHILIPHINE. BUT KUNYIT MOUNTAIN IN KERINCI
Mount Victoria? You mean Mount Oogaboogaboogyboogyboga.
Can he stop saying carnivorous?? They are not carnivorous, they’re insectivorous.. “fLEsh EAtiNg” like please shut up
Emiliano the secretions will eat your flesh over time. And they can digest proteins. So yeah. Stop trying to a act intelligent.
matanuska high I- lmao what do you mean, they digest phosphorus and nitrogen😂 in insects, lmao they can’t digest flesh, if you feed them meat (like a flytrap or sundew) the leaf dies off because they can’t break it down.. I- sis you really thought you snapped huh
matanuska high also the structure of nitrogen and phosphorous are easy for the plants to break down because that’s what literally every plant uses to grow, they can’t break down the proteins in meat because they’ve never done it, it’s like using a wrong key to open a lock, it’s just not gonna happen, stfu
Emiliano insects contain both of those also just look at insect frass. Used for fertilizer all around the world
matanuska high what the fuck are you saying, I already said that insects contain phosphorus and nitrogen.
