    I locked my head into the seat for 4DX Topgun Maverick. It felt like I was in the planes with them. The Gforce was so sick!
    But my 1st 4DX experience was The Batman 2022 and that was on a whole other level. Batmobile chase scene is incredible and will be hard to beat. So good I went 3 times in 4DX for the Batman!

    I only paid $16 to see this movie in 4DX, I loved the experience, I probably wouldn't do it for just any movie, but it was great for Top Gun. I didn't notice the sound problems you were describing at my theater, but I did notice the projection quality was really good, the cleanest, brightest picture I've ever seen at a cinema. The screen width is 1.85. It's common these days for theaters to have 1.85 common-width screens which means most movies will be letterboxed. No masking, so that means you can see the parts of the screen that are letterboxed. **Gets on soap box** Back in my day screens had masking that got wider for scope movies (common-height), not smaller like at home on a TV. **Gets off soap box**

    • @JunkerDC
      @JunkerDC 2 года назад +1

      I was about to complain about the letter boxing too thanks I went out of town and called ahead of time so asked if there would be masking the manger said yea I get there no masking just black bars on the top and bottom I was so mad im not going back there the one in Houston has masking in 4dx but the rear speakers don't work that's why I was looking for a new 4dx theater

    • @nickfalzone7955
      @nickfalzone7955 2 года назад +1

      Masking is bad. Alternately, I saw Lion King (new version) in a Dolby theater. LK is 1.85 so there were black bars on sides. I complained and learned that theaters no longer mask with curtains or whatever at least at AMC. HOWEVER - I have an alternate take on this. Yes, masking (and inherent "black" video on sides or top and bottom) is annoying, but it also means that you are going to see the film full-frame - you're literally seeing the edges. I don't know how many times back in the 35mm projection days where they would screw up the aspect ratio, remove top and bottom, sides, etc. In fact, I just saw Maverick in a Dolby theater in NJ and the genius projectionists somehow zoomed in the image and lost a bit of the sides and headroom. How they did this, I have no idea, but I saw the film in another Dolby theater (both 2.35) and it had the proper headroom. So when I see the pillars or letterboxing, I shrug and say at least they're projecting the entire image.

    • @JunkerDC
      @JunkerDC 2 года назад +1

      @@nickfalzone7955 no masking is trash on 35mm the movie always fit the screen this tv approach of no masking is useless I quit going to theaters that show black bars and don't use masking since switching to digital most time If I see them on screen I leave and get a refund I didn't come to the movies for a big screen only to have half of it cut off use making and reframe that screen no TV's at the movies for me !!!!!

    My first experience of 4DX was a movie double-bill, Fast & Furious 6 and 7 in 2015. Two tickets somehow cost less than a tenner which was too good a deal to pass up trying out this new format out. Next movie I watched was Justice League in 2017.
    It is worth experiencing at least once imo but I would only consider it over other formats including IMAX with Laser (my preferred choice) for certain movies which I think would really benefit from the extra sensory effects. Top Gun: Maverick is one such movie which I think would have been a great experience in pretty much all formats: IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX. Saw it twice at the cinema, first in IMAX with Laser then on a standard scope screen. Loved it both times.

    I saw Top Gun in IMAX and ScreenX (Not 4DX). I must say, the most incredible experience I've ever had, is Top Gun in IMAX. That being said, the ScreenX experience was pretty neat. Well worth the small price increase over a regular cinema. Not just that, but, because of my locaiton (Nearest IMAX is 40 minutes away) ScreenX is a nice substitute, since in general its a better screen so even if the side screens are gimmickey, the overall experience is still better than a regular screen. I also loved it when the whole room lit up. But yea, IMAX was the best. Never really tried 4DX in any capacity.

    I've always loved the experience of 4DX and have seen 4 movies in it including Top Gun: Maverick. I have to say the sound was reasonably good in the cinemas here in Australia as there was plenty of bass and clarity throughout.

      I'm in Australia too and the screens are decent size, there are only 6 - 8 rows of seats in 4dx in Australia so no matter where you are the screen is big. The sound is quite loud with good bass also which means you don't actually hear the fans at any point in time. I don't know if the movie are turned into 4dx globally or locally, but I have found some are hit and miss with areas they have effects and seats moving. I've seen 32 movies in 4dx and some are good some are bad. Horror is good when they only use it for suspense, any marvel film is good with endgame and no way home being standards. There was one or 2 like the invisible man where it was just over used and didn't work, or where like you said there are footsteps where chairs are moving but as each film comes out from the big studios the better they are understanding the best way to use it. Both movies had nice color palettes so maybe that added to it. However, it's much harder to justify the premium cost compared to IMAX and 4DX, because you're just paying to add something to your peripheral vision.. Having been in a plane that was doing aerobatics (when I was much younger), it would have been nice to feel as though I was pulling Gs along with the pilots in this movie. No such luck. I did enjoy the effects of the carrier landings though. Otherwise, the moving chair was more of a distraction. I'm glad I experienced a 4DX movie, especially this one, but I don't think I'd pay the extra to do it again.

I sunk a fortune into my home theater and I wouldn't spend a dime to add any of these effects to it. it's okay 4 thise amusement park rides. I've seen about 10 or so films in this format because I love a good gimmick. For me, a good experience depends more on the filmmaking than the 4DX itself. For films with lots of fluidity and clear motion, the effect is genuinely exciting. Even bad films are fun with 4DX if the implementation feels smooth. My concern with Top Gun is its frantic editing. I can't imagine it would be a good match with the violent direction shifts of the chairs.

    I'm nearby in Mamaroneck. I saw Top Gun in Port Chester Dolby Cinema, which was an excellent presentation. Saw it again at another Dolby Cinema AMC in NJ, presentation was not quite as good, audio levels were too loud, too much front channel, and the picture seemed a bit overcropped and slightly grainy. Goes to show that part of it is theater layout, quality of equipment, and quality of projectionist. Never been to the New Rochelle 4DX but my guess is that there are other 4DX theater which have good bass response and better seating layout. While going digital has definitely improved/dumbed down projection, you will still have theaters or projectionists that don't know what they're doing and screw it up. Only regret is that I didn't see Top Gun in Imax/Laser before Jurassic took away all the theaters. Will have to watch the Imax aspect ratio hopefully on Blu Ray.

    I happened to be in Fort Myers, FL during the holiday and saw Top Gun in ScreenX. I believe that is the ultimate way to watch Top Gun: Maverick, because there was actually an hour worth of film shot exclusively for the format. At least at the Regal cinema I saw it in, it's a bit of a ham-fisted affair: It's a regular rectangular theater, but with semi-reflective sidewalls, and a projector aimed at each. Whenever the planes take to the air, you actually get a 3-screen panorama, which is pretty cool and immersive. The only downside (and similar it seems to your 4DX experience) is that the audio wasn't really up to modern 'premium' standards. I can only imagine how cool this could've been if they'd had IMAX-quality sound with slightly-angled sidewalls that were real screens.
    Thanks for the review of 4DX. I could've seen it in that, and am glad I chose ScreenX instead. Rumble seats are cool, but I can't imagine random, noisy air-blasts in my face being enjoyable.

Then again you seemed a lot further back than we were. We always aim to be central and level with the screen. In this case 5-6 rows back (Row E on my second viewing) and it was fantastic. I was also confused by you saying about the seat movement outside of the Jets. I felt like it was turned off during the quieter moments in our viewing. Perhaps if you're able try another cinema with 4DX if you can? Or speak to management about the subpar bass? It may be a genuine issue no one has brought to their attention

    Sound is so strange at theaters. I'll share my experience. We have an IMAX at King of Prussia which is the real deal - 70mm and upgraded to Laser. I watched Maverick BUT I could hear people eating or they could hear me when I was coughing. That's not supposed to happen in a THX theater during action. I've been there before and many times the sound is very low and others it's too high. Their audio system is insane as in Pirates of the Carribean they had turned it up and whispers sounded like explosions. It was absurd - people were leaving and crying but their THX system is that good.
    The same happened at a Regal theater with Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets - you could barely hear the voices. I asked them to turn up the volume and in the Quidditch scene it was unbearable. I had to beg them to turn it down.
    Movie Tavern is the worst as you lose all immersion into the movie because the sound is played at 50% the level it should be played at. I'd asked someone to turn it up once and again it was painful. All theaters today can play at such high levels that you'll be begging for mercy.
    The problem is that before you show a movie someone needs to come in with a SPL and set the correct volume for that room. That doesn't happen so I end up correcting the volume but it's so tough to go out and ask someone to correct the level and like I said, it goes from too low to your ears shall bleed.
    In my living room, I have a 5.1 with a decent amplifier and I get equally good sound but I can control it and that's a big deal. Volume control is like brightness. You watch a movie at 50 nits, it's going to be a bad experience. You watch at 10,000 nits, it's going to be even worse and you will suffer. At least a dark screen is not painful.
    This wasn't an issue in the old days - I remember theaters having good sound and I could always hear the voices and sound. This has only been happening over the past 20 years or so and 80% of theaters have sound that's not properly set up.
    I'm pretty sure that theater can sound like a studio but they don't set it up for the movie.
