While your rhetorical analysis is sound, the main issue isn't that "old man sounds old"; it's that Biden's debate performance suggests he is literally incapable of working the job he is applying for or ANY job for that matter. Appearance ceases to be a shallow concern when it belies insurmountable, material issues related to memory, motor control, overall mental acuity, fatigue, etc. that would disqualify him from any sort of employment. Biden had several moments where he appeared genuinely confused about where he was and what he was doing, with his eyes staring off in random directions and apparent micro-sleeps throughout. He reminded me of my grandfather about halfway through his Parkinson-related decline, at which point I would not have trusted the man to work a cash register--and he was a damn good engineer and stock broker in previous decades. These are really terrifying times, and the rhetorical quality of either opponent's debate performance is the least of our concerns.
If a student had a bad debate, you would not fail them, that is a true, and a good point. However, if your student appeared to have had a stroke, or dementia, you'd be concerned.
I think biden was 100x worse than you think. I found your original debate coverage interesting and entertaining. Looking forward to next debate coverage.
It's not the media, it's any sane human being recognizing a pattern. The debate was a gift, and this is elder abuse. Any number of Senators his age could do it--they can articulate a case against Project 2025. Biden can't even acknowledge it. It's genuinely stunning to me that you ostensibly teach at St John's... I'd zip through the og vid at 2x as well to see if there's any there there, but you open this vid patronizing your audience and you've failed so miserably to litigate any sort of argument for allowing a man who cannot construct and/or deliver legible sentences even from a teleprompter. He'd already alienated a wide swathe of the base who refused to vote for him bc of Isr. Maybe fine in a vacuum but those progressives are the volunteers who get out and make the case to the public, bc the Dems do zero messaging, and the scant amount they do is uniformly pitiful. As such, the debate performance was a gift. You claim "the media" has an anti-democratic bias, and legacy media certainly does, but it's beholden to the DNC, GOP and interest groups. To pretend the DNC doesn't have an equally anti-democratic bias would require ignoring what many officials have admitted about their collusion against Bernie in the '20 primary, or the v superdelegate structure itself. really nothing approaching rigorous here, totally undeserved self-aggrandizing "I'm not speaking to a uni level audience, huh?" too clever by half, this is facile bs
13:45 “we’re not interested in the mental fitness of a candidate, we’re looking for the mental fitness…..” Thank you so much. “Educators” like you are the reason I quit college.
I agree that debates show us little about how a candidate would perform as president. But I would go out on a limb and argue that Americans perceive debate performance as indicative of how well a candidate will perform as president. Even if that is extremely questionable once you unpack it, Americans seemingly put a lot of stock in these debates, as seen by their influence on polling numbers. In some ways, this seems similar to the development of ornamentation in animals for breeding purposes. Just because a creature has more red feathers doesn't mean it's better at building a nest or caring for young. A more human example might be a job interview. Employers make decisions based on your performance in the interview, even if that interview is in no way indicative of the skillset you might contribute to the company. I'm sure theirs a term for this, but I can't think of it at the moment. Thoughts?
Anybody that is experienced in elder care, such as me, knows the difference between someone that is just speaking in an elderly sort of way and someone that looks like they are experiencing cognitive decline at an old age. Yes Trump made some points that weren't great as well but I couldn't even understand what Biden was even saying half of the time to determine if his answers were substantive or not. Even then subsequent interviews, he has been very very vague when asked any question. I would love to believe that Biden just had a bad night and he just sounds old because he's old but we can all see that isn't the case, regardless of the substance in the debate or subsequent interviews.
My goodness. This may be the most condescending video I've ever seen. As you are a rhetorician, unless your goal was to bove your audience to really dislike you and dismiss you as overly sensitive and without and substantive points, your introduction was a failure.
Yeah he lost me about 4 mins in for that reason. It doesnt take a phd to understand the difference between someone just having a large number as their age and someone that is very obviously in cognative decline due to that number.
I noticed near the end you never ACTUALLY said you didn’t speak like this to your students. You were as vague as a politician. Well, I’m well aware my comments help your channel (you basically said that) so I’ll leave it there. Ty so much for proving a piece of paper does not equate to intellect.
As someone that does not generally leave comments. I want to say thank you for that video. I watched the whole video and moved on to some of your other lectures. As a practitioner of persuasive rhetoric in environmental matters, I find your insights very valuable
well first off elections in the US (and probably elsewhere ) is like the elementary school class president election. it is a popularity contest above all else. not saying it should be; just what it is. as for the RUclips stuff: put your presidential debate playlist as and end-screen or a mid card. and maybe create custom thumbnails.
Hahaha its good if they dont like trump. Dont go to gollege kids. You get lectured at by people like this. You couldn't put yourself in someone elses shoes if they paid you. Empathy is important. And you have none

Really keeping the stereotype of the passive aggressive academic alive. Dripping in sarcasm and self-importance.

Thanks, I hope we have additional debates! Not looking too likely at the moment.

Yes, thousands of years of oratory incubation are completely useless and meaningless. In the context of assessing someone who is running for Office.
why does youtube algorithm keep showing me these random garbage channels with no subs and no views... cmon youtube
pretentious ahhh
Bro has a phd in Reddit speak
Where is this available?
@@SteveLlano that would obviously be a question for you, my guy

That sounds kind of like a cope bud.
Good idea keep making them! It makes me think!

You are trying to hard to avoid what is staring you right in the face.
so we fell off. this was what NOT to do, never apologize but good video on the other hand! Average Steve W :)

Check out my latest classroom lecture video!
Get a haircut, you are an adult.
A question few cared to ask
