The Rise and Fall of the Nintendo Wii

  • Nintendo is one of Japan's most famous companies. Founded over a hundred years ago, the company has helped create some of our most treasured childhood gaming memories. I remember playing Super Mario 64, trying to collect those 120 stars. Getting up early in the morning to play Diddy Kong Racing. Rushing home to play Goldeneye 007.
    Good memories. But I am not going to talk about the Nintendo 64 today. Instead I am going to talk about a later Nintendo product: the weirdly named Wii.
    Introduced in 2006, the Nintendo Wii began as a bold move. Zigging where everyone else was zagging. And at first it worked brilliantly. By 2013, it had sold over 100 million units. But the market changed and the innovative strategy ran out of gas. Unlike the N64 or the PS2, the console is largely forgotten - collecting dust in living rooms everywhere.

    I love the Wii! "House of the Dead Overkill," "Deep Space Extraction," "Mario Kart Wii," "Excitebots," Endless Ocean," "Pinball Hall of Fame Williams Collection," "Bully," "Mad World," are just a few of my favorites. I got my first Wii in June of last year 2021. And I've played it every day since. So, it's definitely not forgotten or collecting dust in my house.

    Believe it or not, the N64 and Wii are my favorite Nintendo home consoles. Especially with the Wii having some genuinely strong first and second party titles like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy 1+2, Super Mario Strikers Charged, Twilight Princess, and Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Along with the occasional third party gem like Red Steel 2 and Sega All Stars Racing.

    11:37 The Wii U wasn't helped by its awful branding. The name is way too similar to the name "Wii". Consumers thought it was a tablet/gamepad addon for the Wii but in reality all the games weren't compatible with the original console

    As for the game cube, from what I know the target audience was not that young, just the people that ended up buying it were.
    The game cube could be connected online via an addon that could be connected, just very few games actually used it.
    The original ps2 model also required a module for online play.

    I remember standing in line overnight with a friend at a best buy to get the wii on opening day. We loved it! I got a WiiMote of my own to bring over to other people's houses to enable 2-player fun. It was many years before I owned a Wii of my own, long after it became obsolete. Around 2018 I started seeing Wii Fit balance boards piled up in every thrift store I went to. Those older folks that bought into the sports & fitness games were passing away and their belongings ended up stockpiled. Shop keepers didn't even know what they were. I started collecting them and eventually started selling my own new product compatible with the controller to try to save them from landfills. People seemed happy to keep their wiimotes, but the poor balance boards are heavy and hard to find applications for. If that sounds interesting, I've made a plethora of videos about it! :) Really enjoyed the history walk-through here. Cheers!

  • @michelbruns

    this video sounds too negative, id say the wii was a huge success but due to simply not enough power it got left behind really quick and devs have not been interested to make games for an under powered device

    • @fnorgen
      @fnorgen 3 года назад +1

      I think a big factor was that it was relatively easy to port games between the 360 and ps3 as they had very similar controllers and quite similar performance. The Wii with it's strange controller and comparatively weak hardware created a lot of headaches for cross platform development. Eventually many studios just didn't bother porting to the Wii at all.
      I remember around 2011 everyone I knew who owned a Wii also owned either a 360 or a ps3, but only a few weirdos owned both a 360 and ps3.

    • @oldestgamer
      @oldestgamer Год назад +1

      @@fnorgen Yep, the Wii was interesting, but it's lack of killer games and online Doomed it, it became a Grandma kiddie system. Switch is heading in the same direction for the same reason, Nintendo is a bull-headed company that will only do things it's way. BTW, own all three, but the main for me is the Switch, and that is because of Skyrim, an old 360 game (?) and older computer game ports, i.e., Duke Nukem, Doom, Quake. Nintendo is again failing as it isn't able to play the big boy games, nor will Nintendo get it's act together for older games, like Metroid Prime, instead giving us a crappy side side-scroller.

    Just wanted to point out that Okami was actually a PS2 game originally. The wii was basically the same hardware as the gamecube, but with the motion control interface. That's why most of the games look like those from the generation prior to its own. The console is capable of delivering a 480p image, but looks best on a CRT. The PS3 and xbox 360 look best on a modern display since they are usually rendering a 720p image.

  • @BasementBrothers
    @BasementBrothers Месяц назад

    Also, third party developers often couldn't easily port their PS3 and Xbox 360 games to the Wii due to its hardware limitations, limiting the game catalog (the same problem the Switch is having now). They also couldn't easily add meaningful motion controls to existing games.

    At 3:14 729MHz of the Wii cannot be compared like that to the 3.2GHz of the Xbox360. The Wii is superscalar (can execute multiple instructions concurrently) while the X360 is not. In fact, the XboxOne CPU is clocked even lower, but is superscalar as well (and AMD64 instead of PowerPC)

    I bought my first wii last year, and modded it. I've been playing it on my 27" CRT and having a lot of fun. I missed out on wii games, and it has been a great way to revisit my favorite gamecube games. Btw, the gamecube definitely could play online. It used an optional network adapter, but it only saw support from limited games. I've been playing Phantasy Star Online I & II on a fan run server with my wii in gamecube mode. The PS2 and xbox both did much better with online gaming, but nintendo did technically have it.

      Nintendo's online service was, and still is, an abomination. Love my Switch, but the online is so bad that I almost never play online. Why nintendo REFUSES to fix their online really shows Nintendo's bull-headed way of doing things, it's their way or the highway!

    Interestingly that nintendo is usually the only company that sells consoles at a profit gain, the wii was no exception to that, sony may ship tons of consoles but there is no gain, just a loss in profit. Microsoft did have a great advantage for releasing at a great price and being able to come out before the wii and ps3 but the gain in consoles sold was a downfall since they could not handle checking the problems the 360 had which is the red ring of death. That alone cost microsoft an upwards of billions in loss, though microsoft can deal with those losses it still doesnt look good when you cant profit.
    The wii did have the virtual console which made an extremely huge profit as well.
    Not saying that wii was the greatest thing ever but i feel nintendo does deserve some credit for maximizing its profits than losing as say oppose to the other companies.

    I have to say that this video doesn’t seem as curated as the ones regarding the fall of a company. There are some errors that make it obvious that the author doesn’t know the video game market very well.
    - Red Steel was one of the to-go games during the Wii’s launch. In retrospective, the controls are buggy, but nothing like that existed at the moment.
    - Wii didn’t sell 150 million like is mentioned at 12:02.
    - The X/S xboxes don’t only refer to the newer 9th generation of consoles. It should have been said “Xbox Series” at 8:50.
    - The only third party game that is brought as an example that didn’t come to the Wii is a title that launched one year after it was officially dead.
    - Many comparisons are drawn between the Wii and “its competition” as if the 360 and the PS3 had equal power, price and specs.
    - I personally think the video lacks a section talking about profits, which were astronomical for Nintendo during that time.
    I understand that it is not simple to make a video about a topic that one doesn’t dominate. I’ll still watch many videos from this channel, since they are very well researched, but there are uncountable channels that do a better job at explaining video game history.
