I pointed out that the WFA wouldn't be an issue if a decent pension was paid.

The Sex Pistols wouldn't appear on Band Aid, John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten refused, because as he told Bob Geldof, there was civil war in Ethiopia at the time the crates of aid would only be hijacked by the rebels, which proved to be the case. Bob Geldof resides in the UK, but not officially, because he pays his taxes in the Republic of Ireland where the rate was/is much lower. I find him a hypocrite of the first order when it comes to parting with his own cash.

As well as my brush with a charity scam as a nine year old, I had a problem with Children in Need.
Every child in my class of 10/11 year olds was going on school journey for a week except one. He and his mum were genuine asylum seekers, living in one tiny room in a run down hostel and, in those days such people got coupons for food and school clothes. They got no cash.
I approached Children in Need on his behalf and he was turned down flat with no appeal. The woman I spoke to was scathing even though a few weeks before the school had raised five times the cost of the trip we were asking forvonly a donation towards.
So I paid half the cost myself and, though his own church had called it a "non-need" and refused to help too, several of our good hearted parents of other or no faith came in and quietly left little donations on my desk so he could go, even though some were recent, legal arrivals themselves and struggling to get established, even to pay for their own kids to go.

My brother was in the merchant navy in the 70s and 80s and he told me that around the time of Band Aid/Live Aid his ship was calling into ports in Ethiopia and there were crates in the dockside with the Live Aid logo on them. It was common knowledge that the grain was being sold by corrupt officials who were pocketing the money, or taken by local warlords or being left to rot and be eaten by rats and mice. Geldof, sitting in his ivory tower, has always refused to accept these accounts, but his vanity project was ultimately for nothing - it didn't help the people it was meant for, and simply lined the pockets of the corrupt officials. I think we have all become a lot more cynical in giving to charities these days. It doesn’t go down well when all the CEOs are multi millionaires and a tiny percentage (if that) goes to the actual people your giving to in good faith. I’d rather support local small charities now where I can see where my money goes. I’m not in the market to turn millionaires into billionaires
