When I lived in Leeds, I encountered Brannigans crisps at the Fenton pub (where Gang of Four used to play), and they were beyond amazing. Smoked Ham & Pickle I think, but also Roast Lamb & Mint. They did Roast Beef & Mustard but wasn't so keen on them. In the mid-seventies, Golden Wonder did a good Gammon flavour, with a dark blue bag that looked too similar to their Ready Salted. In the eighties, KP Cheese & Onion ruled - my dad used to get a big box of them from Tesco every week.

The history of the crisp goes back thousands of years. The crisp wars of 1618 sadly claimed over a 100,000 lives. And then there was the crisp embargo of 1751, which saw china without crisps for 27 years. The Chinese people protested for 5 years resulting in people being hung and even executed for dealing in crisps which had by this time gone underground. It’s goes on and one, but to this day there are several people in prison for using crisps as a dangerous weapon. Each prisoner used McCoys thick cut ridged beef barbecue to inflict maximum damage.

I try to watch all your videos, wading through a sea of jibbering about noodley music with too many notes in hope of something like this. There's so much to say, like, did you know that back in the 60's when I was a kid, there were only plain crisps which always had a twist of blue, wax-proof paper containing salt? Walkers Salt n Shake were the first retro crisp. Thursday was payday so Thursday night was pop and crisp night and I distinctly remember dad bringing home the first packet of cheese and onion I ever saw, They remain my fave to this very day.
I was completely unaware of the popularity of prawn cocktail crisps amongst our gay brethren but it makes sense now you mention it. But it reminds me of something we used to say when I was in my teens;- If girls are made of sugar and spice, why do they taste of prawn cocktail crisps?
But much more important crisps is your smoking. I never took you for a smoker but now I know you are, I dare you to do an entire video, fag in hand, Dave Allan style. It would be a real blast from a past when it was completely normal for people we watched on screen to smoke. Go on, I double dare ya!

@@davidwylde8426 I don't ever recall buying a pack of the pickled onion flavour. It was always beefburger or the chutney flavour for me too. They always seemed to have cool promotions running as well to help prise more pocket money out of me. Not that I needed much persuading. 70s heaven for me was a pack of Outer Spacers, some Trebor Double Agents and a can of Cider Top Deck.

My favourite crisps of all time were Smiths - Savoury Vinegar....how can you get more savoury than vinegar?????
They were absolutely fantastic but are long gone. The closest I've come to that taste is eating a salt and vinegar crisp with a cheese and onion one at the same time. I think Dougal did the same on an episode of Father Ted at some point...have I reached such a nadir in my mental state? Current favourite is probably anything by Seabrooks and Space Raiders Pickled Onion....add to that Walkers Worcester Sauce ... when they don't skimp on the flavour as Walkers so often do....plus they have about 3 crisps in a pack these days so I generally avoid said make unless there is no alternative.

You had me at Beef Space Raiders. The food of the gods. "The lower types in the UK?" The words of a jazzer.
PS Golden Wonder had prawn cocktail flavour way before FritoLay bought up all the UK crisp companies.
PPS Skips smell bummy and are for weirdos.

Cheese and Onion seems to be a UK phenomenon - probably because it is sweet (like prawn cocktail and BBQ). In continental Europe, "spicy" seems to be the predominant flavour. I got hooked on Cheese and Onion in the 1960s. I think it was the first flavour to be introduced by XL crisps (in white, opaque bags).
