How to get DOWN with LECA

  • LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate and I’m using it to grow my plants semi-hydroponically. It eliminates the guessing game of when and how much to water because you just need to maintain a reservoir of water at the bottom that slowly feeds the plants.
    p.s. that mycorrhizae inoculant is like cr@ck for plants! Not a single rotten root during the transfer from soil to LECA 🤯. 10/10 recommend.
    Does your LECA bring all the kids to the yard? 🙃

    I'm propagating some stuff in leca but actually growing bigger plant in it scares me. Like I'm not even sure at what level the water should be? Someone said that if the water is all the way up, my corms might rot? I am... confusion.

    • @ohtheplacesyoullgrow
      @ohtheplacesyoullgrow  Год назад +8

      For rooted plants, I keep the water below the roots (until water roots grow into the water naturally then it’s fine). For propagations, I keep the level all the way up like you would when you water prop. Then once roots are established, you can slowly transition to maintaining a reservoir

    Dang fungus gnats, had them from a couple pots that didn’t get repotted after coming in for the winter, it sucked cause it cost me the herbs I was growing, one house plant and the tomato my mom was trying to grow indoors, both pots were the culprit though… we finally got rid of them in the end I would love to have this new pot of herbs continue on growing into winter this year.

    Makes me laugh that she bought smooth leca. You know its better if it's rough. I mean literally, leca is used because it has a big surface area to volume ratio, allowing it to hold nutrients, good bacteria, and water better. If it's smooth, it will be worse at doing that.

    • @ohtheplacesyoullgrow
      @ohtheplacesyoullgrow  Год назад

      The surface area is not significantly reduced just because it’s smooth. The only major difference is in the buoyancy because the smooth LECA will float if your water level is too high (but when using LECA you don’t need your water level to be that high to the point in which it floats). My Alocasia frydek variegated has been in this LECA the longest and its roots are extremely healthy and the plant is thriving.

    • @888fluffy
      @888fluffy Год назад

      @@ohtheplacesyoullgrow I mean, the fact that it floats means it's not holding the water.
