Strangely, Funeral Doom, the more miserable and bleak it is, the more I enjoy it. It's all about the atmosphere and the gloom that makes me feel a dark inner joy. I'd like to recommend Profetus, Slow, Clouds, Ea, Eye of Solitude, Grimirg, Bosque. There are a lot of great and beautiful Funeral Doom bands but there is also, as in most genres, some total rubbish too. I have to agree though, Ahab are certainly up there in my top three.
Funeral Doom is one of my favorite genres. I simply love the dreariness and sadness in the sound and in the lyrics. My holy trinity is DSBM, Funeral Doom and Dark Ambient. In my opinion the quintessential FD album is Funeral Mourning's Drown In Solitude.
When I think of funeral doom, I picture myself in a dark, cold, foggy graveyard in autumn or winter. There are the ruins of an old stone church. Dark, ghostly figures are drifting through the graveyard in a funeral procession, or gathering in a circle to perform a ritual.
Esoteric are by far my favorite because how dark, trippy and unique their music is. It's the brutally authentic, depressive style combined with dark ambient and psychedelic elements that make their music so dark, rich and deep. Their unique melodies are also just mind blowing. Tracks like circle, quickening, silence, creation through destruction and the secret of the secret are out of this world. The ending of silence is the most epic ending ever. Nothing really makes me feel music so deeply like these guys do. Evoken would be my second favorite. Love the dark and heavy feeling. Other less known bands worth mentioning are: The funeral orchestra Blood of the black owl Torture wheel Hjarnidaudi Worship Daylight dies and Process of guilt (not funeral but still doom and very similar)
Just checked out Ahab for the first time and I gotta say I’m pleasantly surprised! Call of The Wretched Sea is an amazing album. Never been a huge fan of the genre but the way you described it I guess put me in the right mindset to actually understand it. Thanks for that! Keep it up man this channel is gonna blow the fuck up soon
Now you talked my language. Funeral Doom is my favorite subgenre alongside Black Metal. I could fatten the list with: Shape of Despair (my favorite of the genre!), Comatose Vigil (from Russia), Evoken (you mentioned them actually, but I wanted to reinforce the idea), Bell Witch, Uaral (from Chile), Catacombs, Tyranny (this is gold!), Ea, Colosseum... the list can go on and on.
Would you really call Uaral funeral doom, though? They do have the super miserable atmosphere, but they hang mostly in the dark folk side of things. But I agree with the rest. Thanks for reminding me of Tyranny. It has been years since I heard Bleak Vistae.
I absolutely adore your passion about metal, it’s rare and few and far between. You my friend are certified excellent *air guitar noises and hand motions* 🤘🏼
great video, you are pretty well articulated. just a heads up, its pronounced THER.GO.THON, since it took me off the way you said it in theragothorn. Good pics, disagree a bit with Skepticism since it was in no doubt influential but it doesnt hold up to modern releases. Also not too sure if its the best thing to start with Thergothon as they are more of the founders and show the roots of the funeral doom we see nowadays, rather than a complete package that someone can listen to and see all that the genre has to offer. Shout out for mentioning Drown in the end. Probably my AOTY. You should check out Profetus as it is organ heavy funeral doom. Another thing to mention is that Mournful Congregation is one of the few that is able to implement acoustic guitars into their somber music, alongside having the ossibly best vocalization and lyrics throughout their discography, both rhythmically and content-wise. Great vid, earned a sub. Good luck to all your future endeavors.
Cool video, I got into funeral doom in a strange way, I was and still am into old school thrash/death metal and played in a band for 8 years roughly; touring a lot and heard 100000000 different bands and none of them any good. Anyway left the band and was disillusioned with death metal so tried something different like doom, so tried candlemass and really liked it, eventually going down the wormhole that is funeral doom The experience of seeing these bands live is something else, I saw esoteric in a sub 100 person capacity venue in derby and it was life changing
I gravitate to Death/Doom more than Funeral Doom but Funeral is my absolute favorite with how beautifully the female vocals pair with the bleakness of the atmosphere. Goddamn "Heartache" from their Beyond All Sunsets demo is one of my favorite songs from them. I love all the female vocalists from the band's early days, anything from "In Fields of Pestilent Grief" is hauntingly beautiful. I directed a one-act rendition of Poe's Masque of the Red Death back in college and I used Bell Witch "Beneath the Mask" as the main theme of the play. Love those guys. I'm gonna check if you have anything to say about the Death/Doom Genre, I have a lot to say about Disembowelment and Thorr's Hammer. 😄
Ey finally a solid video on funeral doom in general! Wish this got more coverage There were alot of "proto" funeral doom bands from the early 90's I wish were mentioned, some were around the same time as Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth, feel free to check these out Вой - Кругами вечности (really boring and substanceless imo, but good example of the style being used early on) Mordor - Odes, Droney black metal influenced stuff, repetitive with fat synth bass. Very interesting listen and definitely one of the earliest examples of a funeral doom aesthetic and atmosphere Ysigim - Ain Soph Or, not as influential but one of my favorites and the most unique of the early proto-funeral doom bands Faltomy - Forteiture, Very solid release from 1992, also a great example of funeral doom early on. Unburied - Veil of Damnation, Probably the most "death metal" leaning of all the bands. Very good! reminds me alot of diSEMBOWLMENT.
Esoteric rule! Truly sublime! Also love Evoken, Ahab and Thergothon. Check out Blood of the Black Owl, not strictly just Funeral Doom but there's a lot of elements in there.
Great great video. The Maniacal is also my favorite FD album… It’s also a bit… psychedelic imo… Not only mourning but also really claustrophobic. I think Esoteric is the most adventerous one of the mentioned. You know Greg Chandler (singer) other band Lynchgate? Highly recommanded!
THERGOTHON, FUNERAL and SKEPTICISM. are pure classics! Stream From The Heavens was originally recorded in 1992. Switzerlands MORDER “odes” is an early seminal FD release.
As a fellow funeral doom fan (been into it for, Jesus, like almost 15 years), every single album you chose was just spot on. You identified what I consider to be the essential bands and some of the essential records! And you really do well describing what's good about each. 10 out of 10.
@@RapidCycling07 your Lord. You have no right to speak for everyone. Keep your superstitions to yourself. I don't tell you to honor the devil when you say not today Satan do I? I find that disrespectful to my Lord Satan.
Thank you for the video and i love that Ahab shirt If there are any more suggestions please anyone and everyone let me know. I am just now getting into this genre. Thank you.
If you talk about Funeral Doom you have to mention Colosseum (the band from Finland, not the English Rock Band). It’s a band that published 3 albums in the 2000s before disbanding in 2010. Three masterpieces that blend Classical/Film Soundtracks, Ambient and Funeral Doom.
great intro well done... and good recommendations for the novice to try... I do not know why but I love this music and i do not find it depressing at all. I do not know why and if someone could explain it i would appreciate it. i have been listening since the Skepticism Etheere EP which has become my email address... A stunning release. I have found so much music in the last year or so since joining the funeral doom page on facebook
A good general list here for sure. Some may argue against me on this though but I'll say it anyways: why not mention Daylight Dies? Sure the tempo may be just a hair on the faster side of funeral doom for it to really be considered funeral doom, but Dismantling Devotion was probably the album that got me into funeral doom so I kinda still appreciate it. Plus it's just a damn good album tbh
My personal favourite band Mournful Congregation. I’d like to recommend the following songs: Whispering Spiritscapes, and The Catechism of Depression. Please enjoy
Thanks for sharing this... What's the exact name of the first funeral doom metal band? And where can I find their albums? I couldn't find any band named "Farrah Goffin". Thanks
Thanks a lot for a very informative video. One of my own favorite FD albums is _Cenotaph_ by Eye Of Solitude. Definitely check it out. Another band I really love, although not FD, is Shylmagoghnar. Try listening to their album _Emergence._ You won't be disappointed. Absolutely epic.
Do you like gothic doom? I recommend you some good old records: the gathering always, Tristania: first 3 records are very good but the first one is doom and Theater of tragedy. 👌🤘
Don’t believe it. You talked about Funeral but didn’t talk about the Norwegian Funeral Doom Band called Fallen. Anders Eek from Funeral was also a member of Fallen. And I think Fallen’s album A Tragedy’s Bitter End is one of the greatest Funeral Doom albums of all time. Even though it has a traditional doom feel about it, with the way it’s been produced and mixed. With clean vocals that can be heard. It still has an atmosphere that’s still heavy. Still just as powerful as all the bands and albums You mentioned here in this post. And the vocalist, Wow, so rich, so deep and dare I say, way deeper than Peter Steele of Type O Negative. But I’m glad You did have Esoteric on Your list and mentioned their album The Maniacal Vale. As I bloody love that album. As well as the fantastic music, it has an absolutely beautiful album cover as well........... ⚛️☮️🌏
Serious question: when did it become 'funeral doom'? When I listened to bands like Thergothon, November's Doom, Paramecium, etc in the mid-90s, it was just 'doom metal'.
There’s a band I can’t remember for the life of me maybe you can help they had an album called bleak house with a song composed of crying whale sounds on it they were absolutely depressive black metal at the least if not funeral doom I listened to them predominantly in 2009/2010
you ought to check out "frowning, murdered by grief" and "saturnus, veronika decides to die" and, dsbm, "none, damp chill of life" (published on an anti-fash record label, so dont worry, no nazi NSBM 😂) Ill check out your hole list, thx mate. 🤘☠️🤘☠️🤘☠️🤘 (edit, ya know what, ill add "evanescence, hello" onto the list. gothic symphony piece. now THATS insane. ☠️🤘☠️🤘)
Real FD fans listen at 0.5x speed.
😁😁😁😁
0.5 speed is so funny 🤣

Funeral Doom is one of my favorite genres. I simply love the dreariness and sadness in the sound and in the lyrics. My holy trinity is DSBM, Funeral Doom and Dark Ambient. In my opinion the quintessential FD album is Funeral Mourning's Drown In Solitude.
DSBM would be in mine as well though I think death doom would be third but I agree love the dreariness and the atmosphere
Dark Ambient is one the most diverse genres, it takes many different forms, definitely my most favorite.
You don't get into funeral doom. It gets into you.
never listened to metal before, but I fell in love with funeral doom..
thanks for the recommendations, man!
i swear funeral doom has the sickest song titles and album covers
When I think of funeral doom, I picture myself in a dark, cold, foggy graveyard in autumn or winter. There are the ruins of an old stone church. Dark, ghostly figures are drifting through the graveyard in a funeral procession, or gathering in a circle to perform a ritual.
"What is funeral doom? You know the feeling when you look at the paintings behind me? The opposite."
My first was bell witches four phantoms. I absolutely LOVE Funeral’s “Tragedies.”
Thanks for recommendations
Thank you for the video. We can't stop talking to "Shape of Despair".
What are your favorite albums by Shape Of Despair? I'd love to see your ranking of their discography.
Spot on video!! FD is a special discovery for those of us who know.
Just from the intro i know im going to have a great time!!!
Esoteric are by far my favorite because how dark, trippy and unique their music is. Evoken would be my second favorite. Love the dark and heavy feeling. Other less known bands worth mentioning are:
The funeral orchestra
Blood of the black owl
Torture wheel
Hjarnidaudi
Worship
Daylight dies and Process of guilt (not funeral but still doom and very similar)
Daylight dies, just reading that name invokes emotions from the past. Glad you mentioned them
What are your favorite songs by Evoken?
Top 15 or top 10 if you don't mind
Just checked out Ahab for the first time and I gotta say I’m pleasantly surprised! Call of The Wretched Sea is an amazing album. Same here and their new album is so beautiful, epic and doomy

Doom:VS - Dead Words Speak is the album that got me into funeral doom
I never understood that bands name..can you enlighten me?

No Necro Schizma from Holland? They had great impact on the sound of Thergothon.
Antithesis of Light changed my life
Thank you for this video, I now have an idea for where to start listening to doom metal because I never really got into it
FD with female vocals is where it is at for me. Murkrat will always be one of my faves.
shape Of Despair- Shades Of...
Love Shape of Despair. I've really become partial to Monotony Fields as of late.
Band is straight up frightening
My first funeral doom album... I was 14 when heard it for the first time.
What are your favorite albums by Shape Of Despair? I'd love to see your ranking of their discography.
i listen to thergothon endlessly
Esoteric rule! Truly sublime! Also love Evoken, Ahab and Thergothon. Check out Blood of the Black Owl, not strictly just Funeral Doom but there's a lot of elements in there.
What are your favorite songs by Evoken?
Top 15 or top 10 if you don't mind
Love these beginners guide, keep them coming !
She does show up to sing on “ The swansong of my heart “ , in 2011 from Funeral
Brilliant! I got into the genre through Elysian Blaze who I would definitely recommend, and gonna check all of these out too!
Love the AHAB shirt

Dooom by Worship is another more drone-influenced funeral doom album I would recommend if you can get through all of these
THERGOTHON, FUNERAL and SKEPTICISM. are pure classics!

Thank you.
Need to get into this genre so this is a good idea
3:40 [puts captions on] Bro, *Farrah Dolphins* are one of my favourite Funeral Doom bands!
Thanks for making this video - i rly hope you make that video on ahab!
Great channel
Great Videos
gracias!! es lo que estaba buscando hace un tiempo, me habia estancado en Skepticisim, Ahab y Bellwitch
Atramentus - Stygian ( lo mejor)
You probably already know by now, but a new Skepticism studio album just came out after 13 years!
I'll add Profetus and Funeral Moth and Isukiri to the list.
If you talk about Funeral Doom you have to mention Colosseum (the band from Finland, not the English Rock Band).

I'm surprised you haven't done an AHAB albums ranked video
Forgot to mention such cool guys as "Monolith, EA, Funeralium, Longing for Dawn, Tyranny, Shape of despair, Tempestuous fall, Lethargy of death" :)

you ought to check out
