Okay so I’m in a choir that mostly performs at churches because there’s plenty of them nearby, and I must say it’s absolutely _haunting_ to hear echoes of some of that music in a song about a destruction-worshipping cult
1. This song is amazing and beautiful as awlays i am in awe 2. OMG THE COMMITMENT YOU PUT INTO RESEARCH AND SUMMARIAN THAT IS SO COOL 3. Agnes is such a tragic figure, and I love the lines that address that here such as "Oh pure Desolation, oh rapturous blaze / This infant is your shrine / Govern her to lead a great scouring / No language but anguish can define" showing how she was just a kid, and all of this was all she knew. Beautiful job here. 4. "making a song about destroying the world with a holy human microwave " skskskks did you just call the cult of the lightless flame a holy human microwave because YES
As someone who is somewhat of a pyro (I went into welding to play with fire for a living) I love this song. And it's a pretty good song to hum along to while working with fire imo .
I feel like your search for the languages represents an important aspect of the desolation itself: To try things which you have no foundation for and getting somewhere. Failure is the wrong word. You didn't fail, the intro is gorgeous. Just explicitly reaching a place that isn't perfect. Just the jagged, uncertain consequence of decisive action. And as much harm as it can cause, that is the beautiful side of the Flame That Laid All To Ash. Just trying things, however nonfunctional it turns out to be. Making an intro from a dead language does that, the cult's creation of Agnes did that, and Jonathan's attempt of telling Agnes' story sort of did it, at least by Jon's accord. "And sometimes you try something and it just doesn't work out".
In the last part, I think I hear a single voice singing different lyrics than everyone else for a few lines. I can't really make out what she's saying, but I think it's Agnes dissenting from the cult near the end.
oh my gosh i love this song! the lyrics and the harmonies and your singing and all the easter eggs are just incredible. wow. i actually found these songs before I started listening to TMA and i immediately became obsessed with them (they’re so good!) and now that i have all the context they are ten times better. I also greatly appreciate the amount of research that went into this! If you still have that .pdf, I would love if you could share it (if you have it/can do so/want to do so), it sounds really interesting. This is such an incredible song!
Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it! (I can't begin to imagine what these sound like with zero context). It's been a year since I scoured the interwebs for hymns and for some reason I didn't mark down what source I used, who it was by, or even the name of the prayer which is just bad form. What the fuck, Miranda, you hate it when people do that. Cite! Your! Sources! Okay, in an attempt to remedy the above: The prayer is called Exaltation to Inanna. It's by a renowned Mesopotamian priestess named Enheduanna, who would have recognized Inanna and Ishtar as two different goddesses put at some point down the line, the two got conflated. I don't know if this is the EXACT .pdf I used, but it's damn close. The excerpt can be found on .pdf page 14 (16 & 17 if going by the scan), lines 21-23: babylonian-collection.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/Hallo_Van%20Dijk%20(1968)%20-%20Exaltation%20of%20Inanna_YNER%203.pdf (Also I'm looking at this and I managed to miss an entire adjective??? She isn't just radiant she is "tempestuous" in her radiance and HOW am I ONLY seeing this NOW. WHAT is WRONG with me?)
(Copy-pasted lyrics) LYRICS: ni-me-lem u-lu-da nam-lu-u-lu ni-me-gar-hus-bi u-mu-re-gin me-ta me-hus-bi su ba-e-re-ti Agnus dei, omnia comburi Oh merciless pyre upon which all will burn We offer you this lamb Trussed in kindling, bleating your praise Ready in dying to damn Oh hallowed inferno that never forgives Consecrate she we carry Make her your sword, deal smouldering blows No enemy martyr can parry. Ah, the ecstasy in agony Ah, the purity in pain Fire-birthed messiah we bow And swear a searing vow: We will burn the world for you Boil every sea in a dazzling flash Turn clouds into smoke and their rain into ash We will burn the world for you That it may be made Of all-mighty flames Anew Oh ruthless Asag, Devastation itself, Devouring fear as fuel, Grant your supplicants but one spark And with it we will rule. Oh malevolent ruin to which we aspire Bless this chosen child Let her scorching footprints brand the earth Let her rage burn bright and wild Ah, the ecstasy in agony Ah, the purity in pain Fire-birthed messiah we bow And swear a searing vow: We will burn the world for you Cauterize everything and everyone With igneous heat that would humble the sun We will burn the world for you That it may be made Of all-mighty flames Anew Oh pure Desolation, oh rapturous blaze, This infant is your shrine Govern her to lead a great scouring No language but anguish can define. Ah, the ecstasy in agony Ah, the purity in pain Fire-birthed messiah we bow And swear a searing vow: We will burn the world for you Immolate all who would foolishly dream Distill an amen from their final scream We will burn the world for you That it may be made Of all-mighty flames Anew

the absolute euphoria i feel every time i sing this song is unspeakable. something about the chords and minor key is absolutely ADDICTIVE

Your voice is so haunting.

I appreciate the hard work that went into the languages
I appreciate your appreciation! Thanks!
I know this song is basically a big echoey chorale but it always makes my recommendations a bunch of weird hyper religious videos lol
Here's hoping we can light a fire for the algorithm.
My sibling was listening to this and says to say "it is the perfect song to listen to while carding donkey wool"
Oh man I LOVE the use of gregorian choral vibes in here!!!! And those PIERCING "Ah-ahs"!!!!! Brilliant, ASTOUNDING!!!!✨✨✨✨💖💖💞🔥🔥🔥
GAH. THIS MELODY--
What are you, a siren? 💕
I love how much research you did for this, bless you
Just finished the magnus archives. Love how if your a fan you can tell how each of these are essential rituals. Its so great, good job!

Agnus dei, omnia comburi
Oh merciless pyre upon which all will burn
We offer you this lamb
Trussed in kindling, bleating your praise
Ready in dying to damn
Oh hallowed inferno that never forgives
Consecrate she we carry

Boil every sea in a dazzling flash
Turn clouds into smoke and their rain into ash

Oh ruthless Asag, Devastation itself,
Devouring fear as fuel,
Grant your supplicants but one spark
And with it we will rule.
Oh malevolent ruin to which we aspire

google couldnt translate the stuff at the beginning except for "Agnus dei, omnia comburi", which means, "lamb of god, burn everything" in latin
It’s in the description
