This was the first season of Survivor that I watched, and I was rooting for Marty at the time, and him surviving a 3-3 tie after not playing the idol still baffles me to this day!
Not playing that idol is probably the dumbest move that didn't backfire, and the only reason it didn't is because the OG La Flors made a really silly mistake keeping him in the game with the idol.
Marty was such a ballsy player, it’s almost impressive. It’s very rare that a player survives one Tribal Council when the tribe knows they have an idol, let-alone to the merge, and yet he survived at the 6th Tribal anyway. Legend.
It’s impressive how Espada is like the anti-Foa Foa, entered the merge down 8-4, incredibly divided, lost the tribe idol, immediately turned on each other, all failed to reach FTC
Imagine if Fabio was super into tennis and knew who Guillermo Vilas was. "When I was a kid I beat Guillermo Vilas twice" "But he's a tennis player, what does that have to do with chess?"
I always thought it was so fascinating that a player like Marty, who was so laser-focused on strategy, ended up being perhaps Fabio's biggest advocate on the jury. They must have really bonded after the swap. Anyway, I wasn't a big fan of Marty in general, but he was memorable. And I did appreciate how hard he went to bat for Fabio and against Chase at Final Tribal Council.
I think he advocated for Fabio BECAUSE Fabio wasn't a strategic threat. He got to the end with immunity wins and charisma. He wasn't a strategic mastermind so in a way Marty could still feel superior to Fabio in some way. Or I guess not threatened by him.
Marty holding onto an idol at Final 15 when he more than likely should've known he would be getting votes is still absolutely crazy! This is up there with Tai at Final 7 of Game Changers as the balliest hold of an idol in the show's history
I was really rooting for Marty. Was mad he went after Jimmy J, but he wanted out anyway. Watching him suffer surrounded by those openly asshole young people was brutal. Then he had to sit on the jury and watch two women quit post merge and his reactions are priceless. Ended up looking sympathetic and someone I wish played several seasons.
I think part of it was being too afraid that he was going to be ratted out for having it but not telling anyone. Its a bad move to tell everyone, but its an even worse move to let someone tell the entire tribe you have keeping one secret.
Entertaing, was clearly strategic with quite a few flaws. Was able to take control of Espada but lost almost all his power by the time the swap ended. Blindsiding Jimmy T to save Dan was a pretty shortsighted call considering he burned both Jane and Holly Giving up his idol was the right call, but I think he was a dead man walking for the latter half of his season. Lost Yve, Tyrone, and number 1 ally Jill to the swap. La Flor clearly held a lot of the cards despite later infighting

Please tell me Holly and Jane are getting a video? I LOVE them. The two of them are fabulous, fantastic, and I would have loved for them both to have returned. This season is one of my favorites. Marty, Holly, Jane, Jill, Yve, Purple Kelly, Chase, Brenda, NaOnka, Fabio, Benry, and Alina. All of them are so so much fun.

I'm watching this right after the Fabio and Chase videos and seeing the beginning again about the old vs young twist feels like the Imprisoning War cutscene from Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. 🤣
Marty said Jimmy Johnson over heard a confessional after he found the idol. Jimmy was going to rat him out unless he told the tribe. That's what he said on a podcast to explain why he told everyone
Nicaragua was so weird for me watching unspoiled my first time around because Marty is such a clear narrator until his merge boot. And then the show could basically be called, “ooops lost the narrator.” It was just chaotic and a bit hard to follow on my first watch after losing Marty, weird editing that season. He really must have had the best confessionals, because he got so much screen time pre merge. You’d think they would have flipped the edit to give Fabio or Sash or Chase or Jane a bigger narrator edit, but…. Nope, for the pre merge, you’re on the ride with Marty, for better or worse 😂
I don’t care if you thought it was or wasn’t smart. Marty’s moves to be open with, not play, and give up his idol showed the guy had balls of steel. Throw in the grand master lie and the catfishin’ confession to make him a bright spot in a dull season. Shame they never brought him back
Marty is such a confusing player. I still to this day have no idea if he is good at survivor or bad at survivor... but I do know he is entertaining. Also I always wish Fabio actually played chess semi-competitively because that would have made the "I am a grandmaster" conversation so much more entertaining.
They were all using NaOnka as a goat. Sash, Brenda, Chase, Jane and Holly, everyone was going to take her to the end. No one was going to vote for NaOnka at the end. She was there goat.

Marty's idol hold is really one of the funniest and most ridiculous plays in Survivor that somehow actually worked.
