I love everything about this guy. His voice, his guitar picking, his unique chords but mostly the way his music makes me feel like no other singer songwriter ever has. River Man is probably my favorite of his although that’s a really hard choice to make
You have struck serious gold here Daniel! I could write reams about this tortured artist, but have always maintained that a musician blessed like Nick Drake was is best discovered by the individual! Three solo album, virtually no sales, and an eventual suicide in '74. I find, like Talk Talk's last two albums, that it's virtually impossible to get this guy's music across in mere words! The best way to describe his music is 'autumnal', and yet that barely hints at the magic he weaved! When you've started the ball rolling with Nick Drake, it is a crime to not complete the man's oeuvre. His standing now is how it should have been back in the day, so at least it all came good in the end. It's not my place to tell you what you should play, but the great thing is everything he recorded resonates beautifully. Let me leave you with my favourite Drakean moment, a song which never fails to reduce me to tears. Make 'Northern Sky' your next acquaintance with Mr Drake! Thanks and enjoy as i do.
Let me add my vote for Northern Sky. It helped me get through a serious illness 20 years ago, as it was the only music that could get my heart to calm down. Just sheer beauty. Of course, there are many others: Which Will, One of These Things First, Cello Song to name just a few.
I thought Dance Dance Revolution at first and was highly confused 😂 And then it clicked a second later. I'm glad you're enjoying. His music is amazing!! 3 studio albums and they're all great.
Cool reaction video. I came across Nick Drake for the first time about 5 years ago. He inspired me to pick up the guitar again after a 20 year hiatus. So much atmosphere, so much emotion, so much meaning, all packed into his sparse, beautiful minimalism. A true genius.
When the song ended and you said 'dang I want to hear another' I was yelling 'keep going!' This album is just utterly beautiful and the further you go the more enthralled you'll be by Nick's music.
😎👍 I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The song on this album that usually makes quite a first impression is "Things Behind The Sun." If you want to really hear Nick Drake at his most captivating, check out "River Man" off his first album and "At The Chime Of A City Clock" off of his second.
Oh man 😮💨 This is a deep one for me. Got me through my first breakup a long time ago... barely. Hearing this song makes still me long for my first love. Great video man 🙏🏼
There is an even more beautiful version of this song here on RUclips, a home recording of just Nick and his amazing guitar playing. It kills me every time I listen to it. The most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.
I’m not sure why this video popped into my feed but I am very glad it did. First off you have a fantastic speaking voice and I greatly enjoyed hearing you talk about one of my very favorite songs from one of my favorite artists. One thing I would like to say is that I would like to hear more of what you think and feel about the music/song. I enjoyed hearing you read the interpretations of the lyrics, but I wanted another final section of the video where you gave your own thoughts. Thank you for this video and I am subscribed and off to watch more of your content!
I hope you check out the two albums prior to this one. It will give you a wider perspective of what Nick is about. I love this album, but Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter have more production than just guitar. They are almost jazzy but in a great way. As others have mentioned, Northern Sky is awesome.
There is a telling video of Elliott Smith stopping in midstream, during a performance of "Waltz #2", where he says "I can't do this anymore." When you play a song over and over again, you are living in the past, and risk becoming mechanical. Thelonious Monk said that most of his songs were first or second take. Frank Zappa said that playing a song over again perfectly was like punching a clock. Music is play, not work. Perpetual change is life.
It's also good to know that he studied english literature in Cambidge, so he knew the poets very well. I think sometims Genious abuse of relating the lyrics to the author's life, when in Nick I feel many of his songs, although they relate to dark or things, is also about a poetic composition. He really was a great poet, you can read the lyrics as a poem on itself.
Nick Drake's first three albums evolved, each has a different style. Five Leaves Left his Cambridge album (with Robert Kirby arranging) has his "best" guitar playing. Bryter Layter (an English phrase about the weather) is produced by John Cale with great songs but to Drake overproduced. He insisted on Pink Moon being him and his guitar recorded by the amazing engineer John Wood. When he dies John Martyn wrote "Solid Air" to describe him. Also a great track. Thanks for championing Nick Drake 😉
Solid Air was released 18 months before Nick's death. It was a musical and emotional show of support for a friend and fellow artist, an attempt to help him through his depression and self-doubts.
The scene that his music came out of, British Folk Rock (Sandy Denny, Pentangle, Fairport Convention) would go on to influence other genres like Metal. Also, the cross Atlantic collaborations was evident in his projects as well.
It's a pity you skipped his earlier albums. In particular, Bryter Layter is a much more complete album with amazing songs, a beautiful production and nice musicianship from a full band and even an orchestra on some tracks. In contrast, the Pink Moon album comes from a dark, depressed place, and it was recorded mostly in one night.
Nice. Such a nice album. .... For something completely different in every way, and timely, you might want to check out Gogol Bordello. The bands lead songwriter and singer is Ukranian born, and they play 'Roma Punk," with lots of eastern European influence to their NYC punk sound. Great, great band. Try "Supertheory of Supereverything" or "Alcohol." Very funny lyrics. I think you'll really like it.
I would say you would need to go trough the entire album at once, is a really short album. bc you kind of need to get into the ambiensce as well (which is hard if you listen to the separate songs). Then the album evolves beautifully. Just a suggstion :)
Nick Drake is buried in a tiny village very close to me. He had a sister Gabrielle, who was quite a well known actress and still lives there I believe. I have tried to like his music but.....
You say you make your own opinion about the lyrics but then you just read the annotations by other people to tell you what they think the song means like fact...
I love everything about this guy. His voice, his guitar picking, his unique chords but mostly the way his music makes me feel like no other singer songwriter ever has. River Man is probably my favorite of his although that’s a really hard choice to make
Painfully beautiful 💙 Thanks Daniel 🙏

My favorite too! I sang it to my husband at a family talent show when we were dating.
@@debrabrabenec3731 Such exquisite taste and bravery, as Nick Drake's songs aren't the easiest to sing! 🤩

@@kareace123 That's beautiful to hear. The sheer power of music when everything else fails. Hope you're doing fine my friend! 🦋
@@Katehowe3010 thanks Christian. Same to you!
Nick Drake has an addictive quality.
Lyrically real. His voice is smooth and melancholy. Guitar pleasant. Loved it.
Beautiful. That was really, really nice. Yet another song I had never heard until DDR. Great, soulful voice.

Nick Drake is among my top 5 favorite solo artists, and a big musical influence.
When the song ended and you said 'dang I want to hear another' I was yelling 'keep going!' This album is just utterly beautiful and the further you go the more enthralled you'll be by Nick's music.
Great reaction. I didn’t realize a lot about Nicks personal life. It’s so sad, he seemed like a sweet guy.
Hey man my parents both loved nick drake f so I I grew up with all of his music. I love his stuff man. God bless. Nice to see people hear him.
Thank you Daniel, I missed you doing your music. We appreciate you always.
Everytime I listen to Nick Drake, I find myself thinking..."Who's the other guitarist?"
He’s really really good.
There's no one like Nick Drake. Great reaction & thanks for discover more about him and his music.
¡Saludos de Valencia! ✌️

My Favourite is ‘From the Morning’. The lyrics’ now we rise and we are everyone, now we rise from the ground’. Is on his grave.
Oh man 😮💨
This is a deep one for me.

Great video man 🙏🏼
friut tree is 1 of my favorite's nick drake has a place in my heart ❤
I’m just waiting for a full album listen haha, you need to Daniel!
His alternate guitar tunings are so special
Nick Drake is the sun shining through falling autumn leaves.

It is very relaxing Daniel.
Acoustic melancholy perfected
Listening to Nick Drake makes sadness joyful.

This song makes me nearly cry every time I hear it

nice. thank you. keep up the journey
#1 musician of my life so far
Such a beautiful and gifted songwriter. Such a sad man. Such a tragic end

Listening to the whole album is definitely the way to experience Nick Drake.
Everything i hear from him makes me wish I'd encountered him earlier, absorbed him more. Cheers.
“Rider On The Wheel” is worth checking out. Really pared down , just Nick and his guitar.
Unfortunately Nick Drake was too beautiful and delicate for this ugly world. Fortunately the mark he left was deep and consoling.
Nice Folk Music 👍
Bliss
