There will never be another Gavito - I only wish I had come to know tango before his passing.

PATA ANCHA. It all started in 1872 when the poet writer José Hernandez (the "Shakespeare" equivalent in Argentina) wrote his famous poems called MARTIN FIERRO. There, the term "Pata ancha" was seen first. Yes, it does mean "broad foot" or "wide feet". But it is a figure of speech that refers to a man that has the guts and determination to stand up to his convictions. It represents the concept that if you have broad feet, you can stand your ground, have the feet firm on the ground proudly. The original poem was this one:
    El corazón se me enancha,
Pues toda la tierra es cancha,
Y de eso naides se asombre:
El que se tiene por hombre.
    Ande quiere hace pata ancha.
Pugliese obviously was a proud honorable person that could claim he stands with "pata ancha", determined and proud with his feet grounded.
The full MARTIN FIERRO POEM, can be found in 100's of sites in google search. And there are many good translations to English.
