- American actress and singer Tatyana Marisol Ali was born in North Bellmore, New York to an Indo-Trinidadian father and an Afro-Panamanian mother. Eventually at the age of 11, Tatyana’s family would relocate to Los Angeles in order for her to pursue a professional acting career. It would turn out to be a great decision.

Let's face it. 1998 was a dominant year for R&B Music. At the time, Tatyana Ali's album was not bad, it was actually good. However, the release time is what made it go under the radar. At the time, you had a lot of female R&B artist out such as Brandy, Monica, Nicole Wray, Mya, Tamia, Xscape, Deborah Cox, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, Kelly Price, Lauryn Hill, Monifah, Miss Jones and more all out in the same year with their albums. So with all of those releases, Tatyana's release was overshadowed. The competition was just to high at the time of the release. We hear this often in the music industry when an artist releases a good album and it falls short. We definitely can tell that it wasn't the promotion department. She was lucky to have gotten three single releases off the album. Most artist get one or two and then the label moves onto another artist on their roster to promote. We could ask the same question to Jasmine Guy, Tisha Campbell, Debbie Allen and other multi talented women who only released one album and then walked away from the music industry.
Soooo damn true!!! Especially the Brandy and Monica part. The main main focus of the summer was them and up and coming Mya who were all the same age as Tatiyana.

You can study but sometimes that doesn't help you. Student debt, I graduated the year of the recession in 2008, not the right university or mark. Mental health issues uni is tough and possibly I'm sorry to write sexual assault. Prejudice; job applications are turned down because of non English names.

Ashley Banks is like that little sister we grew up with and proud to see she's doing great in life.
The industry was over saturated during that time. She's such a classy beauty and talent, glad she's doing well and out of media drama.
Not gonna lie, I still play “Daydreamin” and “Boy You Knock Me Out”! She had some good features too. I was here for her music career.

Not sure. I think it’s hard for actors to transition into music or be taken seriously in music, but it’s easier for musicians to transition into acting. Tatyana is beautiful and has done well for herself.

I'm 35 and had Kiss the Sky as a teenager. It was a GREAT album and she sounded AMAZING. She Loves Me STILL slaps.❤
I'm sure that others have noticed this as well, but it seems that when famous people marry non-famous people, their marriages seem to last a whole lot longer.

Last year she was the first Artist on Black Girls Rock. She opened the show with a beautiful set. Which I thought was interesting so many people in the comments were saying they didn't know she could sing. She sounded great!

To be honest Daydream and Knock me out were some bops. I think her music career didn't hit as big due to her waiting to late/too much competition when she did Make up Your Mind on Fresh Prince that would have been a better time because we were looking for more black teenager girl singers.
She should’ve dropped the album after Make Up your Mind. I freaking love that performance and wish it was a full song on the album that could’ve came out the same week or month that episode premiered.
Imagine if that had happened in this era.....thanks to streaming platforms, she could have released it digitally right after the episode aired

She's had a good career and when she came out with music there was a ton of teenage singers out and the competition was stiff (Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, Mya, Destiny's Child, Before Dark, 702, etc.). But I really like her and her eyebrows are great

I saw her live in August 1998 during Nickelodeon's All That Music Festival and More. I was 12 years old and it was my first concert! I still have her autograph! ☺️

She had some hit songs ! I’d say her career wasn’t a flop but didn’t go anywhere because just like many other actors .
I feel like Jamie Foxx is one of the only actors to break into music successfully within the last few decades....but even then, he had that album he released in the 90s that I don't believe made a lot of noise (I was a kid then, so I didn't know about chart position, etc). His 2004 album represented the sound that was popular at the time...plus collaborating with Kanye who was hot at the time also helped
@@Missrere1984 I don't think many people knew he had album in the 90s including me so your not alone on that. It wasn't the right time his music career popped off when it was supposed to and he knew the sound people would gravitate to that's why it was successful. Everything is about timing
I feel that's what a lot of people in the comments are forgetting. Tatyana was/is an actor first. The vast majority of actors who try music either don't go anywhere or they don't stay in that part of the entertainment industry for long. Doesn't matter how musically talented they may be, their first love and/or main profession is always acting. Her music career dissipating after only one album is not unusual in this context.

@@Missrere1984 yes, for whatever reason, it's easier for musicians to successfully crossover into acting than actors successfully crossing over into music.

She's one of my favorite human beings. 🤗 Her and Jonathan Bradeis were everything back in the day and my heart still hurts that he's gone. To be a child star and lead a happy healthy life is a rarity. And she does👏🏿 not 👏🏿age👏🏿. Love her!

Timing is EVERYTHING. Example, when Shanice Wilson was signed to A&M, Janet Jackson's LP "Control" was still doing well. As a matter-of-fact Jackson's hairstyle in the music video "The Pleasure Principle" was inspired by Wilson! So, the PROMOTION and female artist pop music OVERSATURATION i.e. Mya, XSCAPE, 702, Monifah, Brandy, etc.
.....but Janet's works were released way before Shanice's debut.
Tatyana also sang "Precious Wings", which appeared in the ending credits of the 1999 film "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland", which I saw in theaters as a little kid.
I'm gonna keep it real... This is my era and she's super talented.. But that music didn't come across as authentic.. It felt gimmick like.. When Brandy said she wanted to be down.. We believed her (and let us not forget she too was on TV multiple shows) when Aaliyah said her love was one in a million.. We felt it (we still do... That song will NEVER get old.. RIP Aaliyah 🕊️🕊️🕊️) when Monica said she was having just one of them days all ladies were like Girrrllll OK!
Tatyana felt like she was singing songs to be kid friendly and cute.. It just felt like she was created on paper by a music executive who didn't know how to brand her... In the 90s there were no games.. No one sounded alike and r&b was at its greatest... She never stood a chance.
But she's winning.. She's still acting... She has a family and she's still gorgeous. I wish her all the best. ❤️
Very well said. Her first few singles were heavily sampled, and it did seem like she was some product on a shelf at the grocery store. It's a shame, because her vocal talent is right up there with Aaliyah, Brandy, and Monica. I did like "Boy, You Knock Me Out," though. Overall, she's a very talented sista, and I'm glad that she still accomplished a lot.
She just gives me those Mandy Moore vibes, which is cool. If you like watching 7th Heaven and wore Jnco Jeans in quiet neighborhoods.

Somebody had to say it 🤣😭😭 I’m reading the comments and I wanted to see one that resonates with me. She is beautiful, talented etc but for myself her music just didn’t hit me hard especially against so many great artist.
She needed producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis or Missy Elliott and Timberland. Had she had these kind of producers around her. She would have been hot. Remember Janet was to be a Actress. Janet first album in 1982 was a flop. When Janet hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis they knew Janet sound style and what beats to use for her. In 1986 we got control and the rest is history.
Regardless of how appealing or talented a singer may be, sometimes a successful music career isn't in the cards. At least, she is blessed with stability in her personal life and she has maintained her acting career. Got to Make Up Your Mind is still a bop. 🎵 🎶♥️

LISTEN, lol! I love Tatyana both as an actress and a singer- she has such a beautiful voice! I was a junior in H.S. when Tatyana released the music video for Daydreaming & as soon as I saw the premiere on BET, I fell in love with the song & went to Sam Goody to buy the CD as as I could & I still own it to this day! The whole album is full of beautiful songs that I connected with as a young lady growing up in the nineties and in H.S.. I'm grateful for growing up in that time period where I saw and heard from other young ladies that looked like me and were beautiful, cool and graceful like Tatyana, Brandy, Monica, Kellie Shanygne Williams, Aaliyah, Tia & Tamera & so many other talented young women.

Being able to sing often has zero to do with having a successful music career. Umm. Brandi, Mary J, Beyonce... None of these people are Brownstone or En Vogue. Beats, marketing, personality, what's going on in the culture at the time, luck, etc. play a huge role

Both Brandy and Beyonce' are vocalists and while Mary is not the best vocally the emotion and soul still pour out of her performances. These should be the last folks used as examples of "just marketing".

Her music was still clean and cute when her mates were losing their innocence. Early 2000s was the era where most of other female singers started the strong independent overtly sexual scheme. She never did anything scandalous and unfortunately she wasn’t a great vocalist. But She definitely had some nice bangers. I Loved Ashley Banks.

Daydreamin was a bop! I think it was bad timing for Tatyana. She came at the tail end of an already stacked roster of R&B singers and kind of the end of an era, cause the following year in 1999 incomes a young girl named Brittney Spears who changed the scope of mainstream music around that time to pop. Black female solo artists then started to be more crunk-pop, so then we had Ciara, Teirra Marie, Nivea, Brooke Valentine etc. So I think if Tatyana had dropped Daydreamin in 96/97, it may have been a #1 song versus just a top 10 even though having a top 10 hit is still a great accomplishment.

I am very happy for her, because lots of child celebrities lives end up in tragedy. Tatyana made the right and best choices in her life, no drugs, no wreck less behavior, etc. Tatyana lived happily ever after
