“Keep Yourselves”

  • In every generation, the church will encounter those who oppose the things of God. Jude therefore urged believers to contend for the faith and to keep themselves “in the love of God.” Alistair Begg reminds us that this “keeping” is not mysterious or isolated; rather, it is an exhortation to the regular assembly of worship, where we hear from God’s Word and cultivate relationships with other believers. It is a call to steadfast prayer and hopeful anticipation of Christ’s return, trusting that the one who loves us and brings us into His family keeps us, even as we keep ourselves.
    Preached: 7/2/2023
    Scripture: Jude 1:20-21

I can't understand why 'being filled with the Spirit' is essentially being equated with heresy in this sermon. I have listened to Begg's sermons since I was a teenager in the early two thousands, but if there's one area in which I feel he falls short, it's that he refuses to touch anything spiritual with a ten foot pole, and that he's so incredibly smug and self-assured about it. Certainly there are charlatans who have damaged the Pentecostal name; there are charlatans in and outside of every denomination. But there are good spirit-filled people there who are perfectly in line with the Holy Scripture too, whom God has used to bless innumerable lives. I have been blessed by these people, and I am not ashamed to say I am one of these people. I am proud to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and to receive messages from the Holy Spirit. And the way in which I know that the message I'm receiving is from the Holy Spirit is because it is always perfectly in line with scripture-- never an 'extra revelation,' or a 'new thing' God is doing. If someone is trying to tell you there's something new God's adding to the bible, run. But just because a person is filled with the Holy Spirit, does not make them one of these frauds. It is unfair, and categorically wrong to automatically equate these two individuals.

Remind me of my dear preacher told us last Sunday,
"The reason why I'm egearly looking for the Lord Jesus Christ coming to get his own is the ending of sin".
Please include praying for us here in HongKong. Thanks much!

Thank the Lord for the Norman Walkers of this world. I know one. He is neither tall nor handsome but he's there to prop someone up when needed. He's there with a meal when it's needed. He's a role model and an encourager. He loves the old hymns, too. He leans back, smiles and sings loudly, though it has been said that his voice sounds like a dying, bellowing moose in the wilderness. I was encouraged by the humility spoken here, and by the acknowledgement that we must disagree in love. Thanks to Truth for Life for bringing these sermons to us.

We must not always flatter ourselves and blame the devil for our transgressions. He's got bigger fish to fry. The sin we commit comes from without our own self.
