Today, the 2nd of January 2021, is the 55th Anniversary of that very operation. The operation was brilliantly plotted, neatly orchestrated and magnificently carried out. General Olds is a real air Ace.
One of the most successful operation during the air war in Nam...my respect to commander Robin Olds...am proud to have this particular F-4 in 1/72 scale diecast from Olds
For full effect, the MiG 21 WT players should have been told they were filming to see how quick they could kill bombers. Only to find out it was multiple squadrons of F-4 Phantoms with expert player talent
Robin Olds is an American hero. Besides disguising F-4 ‘s as Thuds. He had his ground crews put gun pods on several planes. Our missiles at the time were not very reliable, and at short distances he knew he needed a damn gun. Great job and much respect to all who fought in vietnam
Oh yeah Robin olds , trojan horse whoop whoop ! 😎😎😎 he definitely does not get enough credit today as he did in the time it happened. Thank you so much for the commentary and bringing this up to to light Present time

Vu Ngoc Dinh was one of the VPAF pilots in this battle... apparently he not only survived being shot down BUT later in that same year in 67 would become a VPAF Vietnam War ace!!!😮
It wasn't a tactic but it did work and no I'm not talking about operation bolo which was fantastic. An F-105 when he had mig behind him and new he couldn't shake him. Simply raised his nose up and dropped his bombs. The Mig Pilot had a quick moment to think of some swear word before the bombs hit his aircraft and sent him into to ground. It was one of the rare confirmed air to air kills with conventional drop bombs.

It was quite a feat, especially since F-4Cs had no internal guns and at the time I belive they still didn't used gunpods, so only crappy versions of Sidewinders and Sparrows with very low PK.
Also if the Soviets sent advisors and technicians to help install and operate the SA2 SAM sites wouldn't they have also sent pilots and that is experienced pilots or veterans of WW2 or KOREA to challenge USAF or USN forces during the war???
I don't wanna take a thing away from Robin Olds, a certified Nat'l hero, man among men, and among the top fighter pilots this country has ever produced, and I could go on. But. Operation BOLO was a copy of a ruse played out by VMS 214, against the Japanese during WW2, planned, executed, and led by it's leader, Greg Boyington. While it may have been a much less highly technical operation, it was the same basic plan.
09:15 FYI The rules of engagement were ignored for Bola as it had been arranged so that no other US airplanes were in flight. (at least according to the Dark Docs clip I just watched prior to this)
I have a question for you Photog. Most people compare the F-111 to the MiG-23/27 but I believe a better comparison would be to the MiG-25 (compared to the F-111B at least) what do you think?
F-111 is a tactical bomber, it was really only given the "F" designation to appease congress, but it proved to be a god-awful fighter, actually worse than the F-4 Phantom it was designed to replace! The F-111B was the failed naval variant of it (the USN decided to pursue the F-14 instead). The MiG-25 on the other hand is a long range air defense interceptor, so it's really not comparable in role, although it was about as maneuverable, and roughly equal in speed at most altitudes. The MiG-27 is pretty close to the role the F-111 fulfilled, (sub par in comparison, but designed to do the same thing), but its closest actual rival is really the Tu-22 "Blinder" or Tu-22M "Backfire" bombers
@@ArmorCast I was going off the idea that the F-111B was supposed to be an interceptor with the Phoenix missiles and that they had relatively comparable speeds. They also were both known to be miserable dog fighters as neither were maneuverable.
Love the channel, keep up the good work! It would be nice to include thrust to weight ratio and maybe minimum operational speed in the specs. Especially in a match like this, these are interesting factors to add to the comparison
i was a mig pilot in this video, and let me tell you, we DEFINITELY did not know what hit us. taking off and seeing a whole cloud of F-4 phantoms staring us in the face was terrifying to say the least LOL
This video was great, EXCEPT the Scottish Koala was in AB the whole fight. If they did that during Bolo, all of the F-4s would have been hosed. That F-4 is a hungry beast.
Wouldn't the Soviets have been able to send MORE MiG 21s to replenish the 5 to 7 shotdown during Operation Bolo? Sure rhe MiG 21 is more advanced than a MiG 15 or MiG 17 and may cost more but a MiG 21 is surely cheaper than an F4 Phantom or F105 Thunderchief? Because apparently all VPAF pilots according to Vietnamese sources survived and ejected safely so that means they can return to fight another day or even train a new generation of pilots?

Nice idea but the war thunder thing just did not work IMO. I like the game but its way too arcadey to get an accurate representation of a historical battle. I mean look its just one big mass of fighters turning and burning at each other. No real world tactics involved whatsoever and the actual battle was not represented well at all by SK, literally just head on missle firing of masses of players. The other players casually talking and joking also takes away from the historical value. I think a future video with some of the guys who play DCS like Growling Sidewinder would work so much better as it has a much more mature player base.
