I am trying to save money, because both my husband and I lost our jobs. So we have to spend our money more wisely. And think twice before we buy something
I want to be a good steward of the money I have been given , build integrity and trust , be someone my husband can be proud of when he thinks of finances instead of shaking his head and saying “can’t count on you for saving money “
Although I'm not doing a no-spend challenge, I am doing an "ethical-clothes-only" year. I'm not a big shopper, but I recently did some research and found that much of my closet comes from brands having negative environmental and social impacts. So, the clothes I buy this year have to either be 1) made local 2) thrifted or 3) made by ethical brands (Good on You is a great resource for this). It sounds tough, but I decided that if I'm not willing to put the effort into making sure my clothing fits into one of those categories, then I don't need to buy more clothes. Good luck to everyone on achieving your personal goals this year!
Me too!! I’ve recently found some eco conscious local brands and a few thrifting businesses that I choose to support. I noticed that it started to become a spending addiction for me as well so I’ve decided to just shop only when I have store credit from consigning from these stores. Takes care of both my clutter and spending issues. Haha
I‘m started that same challenge last year and it went so well, that I am never going back! All my clothes last year have been thrifted and by companies with high ethical and quality standards. I find that by buying quality over quantity, I have no need to buy new clothes often, which is a great side effect. Good luck with the challenge, I believe in you.
Less material clutter is less mental clutter. Material possession obsession is so unhealthy. I was stuck in this loop for years and am on my way out. I find my head is so much more clear with less stuff. More time for things that matter. More of a reason to focus on quality in the things I do have. Helps keep perspective and remind me to be grateful for what I do have. This is my why.
To pay off a credit card, again. I have two kids that grew a lot on me almost every season and I couldn't keep up with it. So now, I'm paying it off again, while trying to save up money for them. That's my no spend challenge. Super hard, but will be rewarding
I'm on another of many no spends. I pay my rent & utilities, purchase necessaries like T.P., vitamins, soap (don't use body wash). Of course, food is necessary and I have minimized this as much as possible. I'm car free and the bus is inexpensive. I have only a few medical co-pays for specialists I must see periodically (this year that's primarily cataract surgery and hospital ill. That's it for this year. I'm paying off my last $3000 dollars and then, after many years, I'll be debt free and able to save way more. I live on under $1500 a month and this has taken a long time. I'm sure I'm not the only elder in this situation. Don't give up! If I can do this, so can you. I think the biggest revelation was when I learned to say, "because I don't want it and "Because I don't want to". Those were big for me!
Priority #1: saving for a trip to Germany so my 3yr old daughter can finally meet her great-grandma and grandma. My husband has been wanting to visit home for years and now we’re making it a priority to see family, even if the flight is 9 hours.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ We are in the same boat. My husband's grandparents moved back to Colombia full time and say they are too old to come here to visit anymore. So we can't wait to bring their great granddaughter to them ❤️
🏡 On the homestretch to paying off 30 year mortgage in 8 years! Putting all savings through no spend challenges toward principle! Also, breaking huge soda addiction and doing the same with that money, hopefully permanently.
My mortgage is 3%, so I won't be paying that off early. The extra money goes into the market for a much larger return than saving 3% interest on the mortgage...
My why is to break my Amazon addiction! I'm in for the month of Feb. Starting *right now.* No online shopping other than grocery, and no groceries that I can source in my freezer and pantry. Good luck, everyone!
I'm doing the no spend challenge because I am a hoarder and I often find myself impulse buying things and never letting go of them. I believe that doing a no spend challenge will help me to correct my bad spending habits and allow me to find ways to be happy with what I have, in stead of what I want.
I did Spending Freeze and Empty my Freezer in January…will continue on in February (I can’t believe we still have food in the freezer!) all the best to all who’s up for this challenge 😀😀
My why is, to stop using shopping to replace being stuck at home or lonely or unhappy. To stop my shopping addiction. And to have money to travel and have more experiences instead.
Hi, Marissa Happy to see you. I am on a no spend self challenge since late 2019.... Haven't bought any personal items like clothes, shoes, bags, jewellery.... determined bro continue for 5 years... I am also on self challenge of not to accept material gift accept food and experience....for life time... Not buying single use plastics for life time... It's not easy... And I keep list of rules in my phone to stick to my goal...... I have
My why: get out of debt and knowing that buying “things” won’t bring me happiness (it hasn’t in the last 10 years, so it won’t now!). Eliminating one category is so helpful! Thanks for such a great video
When I was busy with my projects, I didn't have time to think about buying anything, and had no interest in buying anything (maybe I am too cheap). I live 2 miles away from my office, I walk to work everyday. I eat breakfast at home, bring my own lunch to my office, and brew my own coffee in my office. For the last 6 years I haven't carried any cash in my pocket. I only carry a phone with a credit card for emergence. I guess people like me are born to be a minimalist. The good thing is that when I need to buy something that is really necessary, I never bother to check my bank account balance or credit card balance. Yes, I am frugal, I am cheap, but I enjoy the sense of financial security.
I started a No Buy challenge last month. The only things I have brought have been essentials and then paying bills and rent. I've been selling all the things I don't need anymore and doing online surveys for extra money. My challenge is still ongoing as this year I want to buy my first home.
Doing a No Spend to help save money to finally leave public school teaching and open my own small business, teaching art workshops. Every little bit counts!
I did a no spend challenge because i wanted more control of my life choices. Within a few months i started seeing the positive results in my emotional and mental health along with my finances. I was able to nurse my old car along for a couple of years and had enough in savings to buy a newer one with cash..it felt so good! 😊
I'm doing this because I want to become more self aware of my finances! I never remember where my money goes, am an impulse buyer and I never ever realize just how much I spend every week on non essential stuff! So it's gonna be interesting to see how much I save because I literally have no clue! Am doing medium level! Wish me luck for my first ever no spend challenge! I feel like I'm doing it with you so that's really cool, and just wanted to say thank you for giving me the idea in the first place ☺️
Thanks for the prompt for viewers to share their why. I am tired of overspending beyond my means. I am looking for a more simplistic life. We are in the process of moving and although we are not big shoppers, I am appauled at the number of items we have an inventory we are managing in our lives. Extra stress adds unnecessary stress.
I'm doing a no buy year for 2022. This is my first no buy year challenge. I tried doing a low buy the last half of 2021 but didn't understand needing rules, guidelines and goals. So far my first month has been very successful. I've saved 3 times as much in January as I did in the whole 7 months of doing my low buy
My why is to beef up my emergency fund after a lot of unexpected expenses last year. I have a tendency to just mindlessly add little things to my cart, but lots of little purchases add up quick! I’ve basically set myself a budget for non-essentials this year, so not quite a no-spend, but it’s already made me way more conscious about what I bring into my home.
After making the decision to eliminate synthetic material from my wardrobe (95%) I have my wool and cotton mostly comfortable duds. I’m keeping some dress clothes for weddings /funerals or the unknowns. Since I’m predominantly in a rural area there’s not a clic for conformity besides I do me pretty well ! I eliminated half of my closet goods and have room to organize the rest. I’m finding freedom !! Gonna keep going with the process as I have a ways to go . As a craftsman I choose to keep my tools and will bequeath excess in that area to encourage or inspire others to work with wood. Bigger payoff than to make a little from selling them. Kitchen and household items are being given to a free store for needy persons . I’m not a radical minimalist but I’m seeing a benefit from getting stuff out of here so I can get on with life as a focused person !!
Well i am saving for two things. Number one a big hug surprise gift for my daughter and then second a vacation trip for myself. I don't travel that much and also i don't take time off or days off for myself. So i am going to treat myself.
I'm hiding some low-grade depression by shopping 🛍. Not good in this economy when I am overworked and tired. It's hard to think straight, and I compensate with spending.
My why is to be more aware what we're spending money on. I tried to meal plan for 2 weeks but still had to grocery shop for a few things the following weekend, I was bummed I didn't make it 2 weeks but I'm trying. ❤️👍💪
As somebody that spent their money in a VERY stupid way quite recently, i think it's really a good idea to slow the heck down and actually save it up. I've already managed to quit buying clothes that i don't need, which is a huge move. Now just to not spend money on stupid things i don't need and i can finally really save up. Imma try this challenge and see if i can do it.
I’m on day 4 of my no spend challenge (march). I chose level Medium for my first time, it feels right just for me. So excited to do this and my reason is 💵💸 I don’t have the economy to shop to be honest and I don’t wanna have any debt because of shopping. I’m also decluttering my home and donating the things, feels so GOOD! 😊
My no spend is to get out of debt. As of right now between the house car and credit cards were 95,000 in debt. I can't go completely because I have medical needs and kiddos so I'm going to reduce my spending amounts and tackle those cards then the cars then the house!
I just came out of Walmart for a small shopping list and spent around $190 dollars and noticed that items went up 25% just lately. I want to save $ for better experiences instead of having a house full of stuff. Thanks for the tips.
I have an addiction to eating out and ordering in that needs to be broken. A great deal of my income is literally being eaten. No-spend challenge, here we come!
Loving your channel. Thank you. I spend money on things I really don't need, clearance items, and just plain dumb spending on convenience food and restaurants. Have a nice day.
Next year I have my brother’s wedding in India so I have planned a India travel around it for my friends and most importantly for my Dutch husband. But this month I lost my job due to recession. That’s why I need to save as much as possible from my reduced unemployment benefit. My rules are only I am allowed to buy gifts for others, groceries and occasional social activities (otherwise I will be depriving my husband) but No travel till end of this year 2023
When I realized that there's less and less money available in my household, I initially decided just to observe and write down each and every expense - necessary or unnecessary. I have been doing this for about 6 months, before making any decisions - what and where to cut down. I really like your suggestions :D
I would like to brake the guilt fed feeling that I need to buy more in order to be a good mum. I would like to replace buying things with spending meaningful time together.
I audit my pantry and fridge and meal plan for 5 years and saved a lot of money, but now with the constant fear of lockdowns and warnings from the government - I started "hoarding" while I'm a minimalist. Would you make an episode on this one, please?
My why is to save money, reduce mindless distractions and become more present and grateful for the things I have. Saving money to pay off debts and car.
I need a financial reset. I'm tired of spending money on things that become clutter or that I quickly realize isn't worth it after buying. So I want to slow down and be more mindful and intentional of what I buy.
I’m going to challenge myself with no spending on fashion items for Feb. I need to break the habit of browsing these few websites just out of boredom in between my thesis, or while managing secondhand listing. I’ll aim for only selling clutter items and not making a single purchase, and see where I’ll end up with in a month 🙌🏻
One thing no-spend challenges taught me was not to solve every problem using money. When my face wash ran out during a 1 month no-spend challenge I ended up using honey from my pantry instead and it worked really well. If you forget to plan for something in advance (which I always end up doing) it can also really help to ask yourself the question 'How can I do this for free?' 'Can I make a gift instead of buying? Or find a free event to take someone out to?' I feel like your creativity can increase and actually make no spend challenges fun as you can end up doing things you have never tried before.
I tend to buy things based on 'eventually needing them' and also I shop as a way to deal with stress. It's rarely frivolous things but it's often things I don't actually *need* or that I don't truly love/that don't truly increase my quality of life.
You could also do a no toiletry challenge to assist with no buy 😂 my laziness made me realize I don't need face wash or moisturizer, body wash or moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner, commercial deodorant, etc. I did start washing my hair again (but weekly instead of daily) after 15 months because hard water made it difficult to maintain, but otherwise it was awesome! I still occasionally used tinted sunscreen, mascara, lipstick or gloss, and makeup remover. I use water with a little apple cider vinegar as deodorant. Simple fragrance free bar soap for my hands. Sometimes laziness can be used advantageously. Good times! The hardest no buy for me would be no eating out. I don't need things (or I can easily wait to buy them), but I loooooove eating out.
My why is because I want to save up for a weekendtrip to Aarhus (DK) so my son and I can attend an event for families affected by Noonan syndrome. A rare genetic condition that my youngest son suffers from. The thought of seing my son playing with other children affected by Noonans and me meeting other parents of specialneeds children, is a huge motivation. I'm planning on doing the entire month of February on level medium. That'll save us some money.
I am don't have a problem with not buying clothes and household stuff, but due to many food allergies, if I see 'my' foodstuffs at a good price, I can't seem to rely on the inventory and just have to get more. MUST STOP IT for FEB 🙏
I'm a university student, first year too, and I've been stress buying alot (I have a tough home situation and a difficult major that soaks up my time and energy despite loving the major), so my savings took a major hit. My wallet feels very empty and I can't save up to buy things that really mean to me (like an art tablet that I've been wanting for years at this point). So, I'm going to start a no spend challenge, try and get my finances and 'retail therapy' under control. (I've been watching this channel for a while now, but haven't taken action on anything yet. I think this, and today, is the starting point. Finally.)
I recently went from pen and paper and moved to digital budgeting and bought paycheck trackers, debt snowball tracker and expenses tracker from Etsy and it’s made budgeting more fun and visually pleasing to look at 😅 I feel more organized and it’s much faster to do my finances digitally. Also, I’m not allocating any money to my shopping category when I set aside funds for categories. I have enough clothes as it is and as much I want to upgrade some things it can definitely wait as I’m paying off my car loan and saving money.
Im challenging myself since shopping is an addiction for me. I have the funds and I save plenty but I just wish to buy unnecessary stuff to fill a huge hole in my life. I’ve know I can do it if I put my mind up to it.

I realized that I fell into this "I'm an adult so if I need something, I should just buy it" mentality. I've re trained myself to add things that aren't crucial to the household to a Christmas wishlist and it kind of forced my shopping into a no-buy corner.
I've been waiting for this for months, Thank you for hosting this challenge! I do a no spend at the beginning of each year, but it's fun to do it with others. My why: we only have 2k left in debt to pay off and I'm ready for it to be gone. The only thing I'm allowing $ for in the next 3 months is soil for my garden expansion. And 1 dinner out with husband (because he would feel deprived if we didn't). I am focused on healing my body at the moment, so walking & working the garden will be my areas to keep me from getting bored. As well as a sugar cleanse. Thanks again Marissa! Great luck everyone!
My reason for being interested in doing the challenge is saving money to buy inventory for my plant store. I just turned 20 and just opened up and plant and flowers shop and I need to be conscious with every penny I spend and I would like to build up my saving for cushion in case something goes wrong in my business.
First off_loved this video. Not only were there great tips but also writing exercises that I will be doing! I want to do a spending freeze for a week. I have been spending an insane amount of money eating out and have been for a very long time. Not only do I want to start saving more money but I want to become a more financially responsible person. Thank you for the video!
I think January was my no spend month. I was sick for about half of January. I was amazed at how little I spent. I didn't go anywhere and barely shopped. So, I'm good for now!
Implementing this no-spend challenge along with a 6 month budget to pay off my last credit card. I think adding this “challenge” will move the needle for the psychological pattern to break non essential (items outside my grocery list) purchasing habit. Thanks for this video.
This is a good challenge. Huge. I go shopping to find joy and get home finding I didn't need a thing. I have too many clothes. So this is a very good thing to do. Thank you
I just (mostly successfully) finished a no spend month prompted by another RUclipsr, so I have a few things I have to buy. But my goal is to buy the few items I know I need (the delayed gratification is great for crystallizing needs vs wants) in the first week of February and then go for the medium track the other three weeks. Unfortunately we had about $500 in unexpected vet bills that undid the financial good of our no spend January, so recuperating from that and hopefully getting a little bit ahead will be a major incentive. Thanks for the inspiration and great tips Marissa!
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to attempt a no-spending money tomorrow because we just moved overseas. Even though the military helped, it was still very expensive. However, I got into a habit of spending. Replacing pantry items and cleaning supplies quickly turned into purchasing unnecessary items... like my labeler. The line if "want" vs. "Need" greyed, so now I'm hoping to get back into the habit of frugality
I was drawn to your channel and want to save money because I would love to have a comfortable savings account amount before baby #3 is due in September! thanks for the video :) subscribed!
I just took a break from my healthcare job so need to really budget my money. And interesting to see what I really need not want. Fruits, veggies and gas for the car I’m hoping are my only “spends”.
I have an eat out addiction during lunch at work. Its $14 for a drink and a meal now adays!! So yesterday I decided to challenge myself to a Gatorade only day. I slipped up at the end by buying a soda but I survived. Im doing the same thing today. I think this is going to be a new normal for me. If I can save $10 out of $14 every day then its a success.
Why? Because I need to use up what I already have. I’ve been so blessed with easy access to food, clothes and craft materials despite the *pandemic* and I need to be thankful and use them all up before purchasing more.
I'd like to pay off my credit card. I've done a medium level no spend in January. In fact I do this every year (Jan-Apr-Oct) The rules are to only buy food from the grocery store and gas. Slipped up 3 times: a plant stand I wanted but was backorder since November, a book on weight loss to follow along with a friend, news socks. Was not going to continue in February but after listening to your video I decided I'd try ''BOSS MODE''! Still need gas to go to work but I can pick up extra shifts, sell some stuff and make due with the food I have at home. Game on!
Okay, my why: My partner is building our eco house, I am due with our 4th in 3 weeks so I’m not working anymore. We are living off our savings and I’m trying to stretch it out as long as we can.
Next month is October, so, before November hits us with Thanksgiving/Black Friday and December hits us with Christmas, we want to make sure we are at a healthy place financially. We will also be trying for our second child starting in January! This next month will be a sort of test-run to see if we can successfully save the amount of money that we will most likely be spending after we add that second kiddo! (i.e. daycare, extra food, diapers, etc.) I am confident we can do it, and it will hopefully increase the excitement we feel toward welcoming a new family member by the end of next year (Lord willing!). Thank you for this challenge & walking us through it!
I always do a weekly financial detox by not going out nor shopping online! I try to finish all the food i have before going to buy more , when i buy something to wear I choose a good brand not the cheapest to avoid buying more
I am trying to save money, because both my husband and I lost our jobs. So we have to spend our money more wisely. And think twice before we buy something
Saving towards my son’s university fees. The less I waste the less debt he will have. Massive motivator.😊
I want to be a good steward of the money I have been given , build integrity and trust , be someone my husband can be proud of when he thinks of finances instead of shaking his head and saying “can’t count on you for saving money “
I’m trying to reduce mindless spending and have an attitude of gratitude for what I have. ❤️
This is me too❤

Yes, buy fair-trade clothing if you are against slavery!
I really enjoyed this idea. Thank you for sharing
I have started doing no spend challenges on clothing for 3 months at a time, to save money and have less of a negative impact on the environment.

we are saving money for a vacation this summer! a no spend in January and now also a low or no spend in Feb also!
Curbing impulse buying and refocusing on essentials!
My reason is to stop impulse spending for brief moments of satisfaction. I want to develop healthy money habits. Thank you for this!

I just did a January no spend challenge and it went really well! I’m going to do this for February!
Woohoo 🎉 go for it!
2 months in a row?? How's that going??
I started no buy in January with goal of boosting savings that will cover all unexpected expenses.
I started a No Buy challenge last month. The only things I have brought have been essentials and then paying bills and rent. I've been selling all the things I don't need anymore and doing online surveys for extra money. My challenge is still ongoing as this year I want to buy my first home.

Totally can relate! So happy to join in into this challenge as well OwO
Hope that you've made great strides in getting your spending under control and are firmly rooted in a spending plan that is aligned with your goals.
Thanks for the prompt for viewers to share their why.
I am tired of overspending beyond my means.
I am looking for a more simplistic life.

I want to nurture gratitude by making do with what I have❤
I'm hiding some low-grade depression by shopping 🛍.
My why is : buying my first house 🥰🏡 Thank you for all the tips 😄
Cheering 📣 you on!
Me toooo !!! 😊😊😊😊
I hope this will be my goal one day in the future, saving a deposit for my first house 🏡 🤩
I know its been a long time since your comment but how did you get on? I have the same problem and would love to hear some tips if you have any
Loving your channel.
I agree it’s important to be prepared for a no spend
The tool and skill of being no spend for a period of time is freedom to follow your values without negative consequences. I love your channel.
i like how i go on a no-spend challenge right before my husband and mother's birthdays AND Christmas. I've picked a great time to try this lol!
I audit my pantry and fridge and meal plan for 5 years and saved a lot of money, but now with the constant fear of lockdowns and warnings from the government - I started "hoarding" while I'm a minimalist. Would you make an episode on this one, please?
I think this would be great for someone with a psychology background to dig into - do you know Slice of Light? You should ask her to do one!
I am currently trying to pay off debt and move states, and this is something I know I need to focus on. ✨
I need to break my impulse spending habits and clear out some junk, so I’ll be attempting my first no spend challenge.
To reeducate myself and keep more sustainable shopping habits.
Same with me🙋

Great luck everyone!
my spending is out of control- and so is the amount of stuff I have that has taken over my home.
Trying to be more mindful of what we spend our money on, how much we're spending and to also help bulk up our savings!!
My reason for being interested in doing the challenge is saving money to buy inventory for my plant store. I just turned 20 and just opened up and plant and flowers shop and I need to be conscious with every penny I spend and I would like to build up my saving for cushion in case something goes wrong in my business.
Cheering 📣 you on 🌸 🌱!
Hope you feel better now! 🙌
@@AtoZenLife Thank you! ❤️
Implementing this no-spend challenge along with a 6 month budget to pay off my last credit card. I think adding this “challenge” will move the needle for the psychological pattern to break non essential (items outside my grocery list) purchasing habit. Thanks for this video.
I’m planning a no-spend challenge year for 2024. We need to pad up our savings for retirement. 💲
@dawnjungblut6075 3 months into the year. How are you doing Dawn? You.CAN.Do.This!
I'm doing a no spend 2023 so I prep most of my skin care on black Friday.
We’re trying to save up on having a second baby 😁
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to attempt a no-spending money tomorrow because we just moved overseas. Even though the military helped, it was still very expensive. However, I got into a habit of spending. Replacing pantry items and cleaning supplies quickly turned into purchasing unnecessary items... like my labeler. The line if "want" vs. "Need" greyed, so now I'm hoping to get back into the habit of frugality
Planning a vacation in May.
I was drawn to your channel and want to save money because I would love to have a comfortable savings account amount before baby #3 is due in September! thanks for the video :) subscribed!
I am trying to pay off my debt! I love going all or nothing so I really want to try to do no spend to accelerate my goal. Thanks for all the tips!! :)
Oh my gosh I love this video and I'm not even done with it yet. Excellent presentation and easy to grasp advice!
Thank you for this video, Marissa. It is awesome 🤩 and super helpful
Game on!
Oooh so excited to see another boss mode! 💪 Let’s do it!
My dog has been put on lifetime meds, and they aren't cheap, so my income needs to stretch a lot further from now on
Saving up for maternity leave for Baby #3 ✨
I want to Save for future purchases. We buy nothing on credit so must save for further big purchases. 😀
Yes! We also don’t buy anything unless it’s with cash. 💰
I always do a weekly financial detox by not going out nor shopping online! I try to finish all the food i have before going to buy more , when i buy something to wear I choose a good brand not the cheapest to avoid buying more
I want to get out of debt. I've done a lot of strides towards consolidation but now I want to be better about paying down the debt faster.
Working on building our savings account back up, as well as simplify our life.
I'm new to your channel & am looking for ways to reduce costs prior to retirement. Thanks for all of your inspiration!!
Although I’ve been pretty frugal of late a no spend challenge will push me further :) less debts and more emergency fund!
