You're overstating his acting. He was just playing himself, as he is a suave, thoughtful, charming gentleman in both real life and in this movie, so it doesn't requiring any actual acting for him to play a character that is just like him. It would be far more impressive for him to play a character totally different from how he is in real life. Anyhow, just because his performance in this movie matched the level of performance of the other actors in it doesn't mean his acting is necessarily on their level. It's a bit insulting to claim "his acting was on par with the other actors in the film who had more experience" considering he came in with zero acting experience, which means you're essentially saying that someone with zero acting experience is already at the level of actors who have acted before. So it's too soon to call him "a total natural." If in his first acting role he were to play a character totally different from himself at the same level as a phenomenal performance by another actor, i.e. playing the Joker at the same level as Heath Ledger, then that would indicate he's "a total natural." But that wasn't demonstrated by his performance in "Crazy Rich Asians."

People get confused but sometimes other Asians can't tell what ethnicity someone is. I've been in groups were Asian Americans could not figure out the ethnicities of others in the group. I remember being more accurate as a non Asian then the people in the group who were. It was a meetup group and it just came up.
Aryan I think that is overthinking it. Within the next 30 years there will be less and less clear racial groups with so many people involved in interracial relationship. My parents were both white but neither of their grandchildren are fully of European descent if we were even 100 % European from the beginning. I won't know that until my 2, 3 and me results come back. My niece is half Filipina half European descent and my child is European and Arab descent. That is just the way the world is now.

It isn't just a western thing. Lightening cream is used in Asia to get lighter skin. That is fueled by their own populations and the plastic surgery craze. Outside of Memories of a Geisha, we haven't really seen an English language film with a full Asian cast in mainstream cone,a release since The Joy Luck Club, which was phenomenal and also universal in tackling the themes of mother daughter relationships, and self-actualization. I'm so ready for a good love story and hope this film signals studios revisiting the romantic comedy genre, it feels as if we haven't had a good one in years.

I see lots of comments by ignorant westerners... Asians doesn't equates Chinese /Japanese /Korean looking aka East Asians... There's South East Asians,West Asians etc
People get confused but sometimes other Asians can't tell what ethnicity someone is. I've been in groups were Asian Americans could not figure out the ethnicities of others in the group. I remember being more accurate as a non Asian then the people in the group who were. It was a meetup group and it just came up.

Aryan I think that is overthinking it. Within the next 30 years there will be less and less clear racial groups with so many people involved in interracial relationship. My parents were both white but neither of their grandchildren are fully of European descent if we were even 100 % European from the beginning. I won't know that until my 2, 3 and me results come back. My niece is half Filipina half European descent and my child is European and Arab descent. That is just the way the world is now.
I mean we could really hard core and include everyone in the Asian continent which would include some Arab countries. He isn't the only actor in the movie who shows himself as the stand up guy so is the actor who plays his cousin and he is full Chinese. Sometimes there really isn't an agenda present. I see more "western" looking Asian actors in tv shows from other countries like Taiwan, Korea and China. In most Asian countries they pick the fairest actors to be the lead movie stars. It isn't just a western thing. Lightening cream is used in Asia to get lighter skin. That is fueled by their own populations and the plastic surgery craze. The double lid surgeries are finally slowing down.

I'm looking forward to it as well. Outside of Memories of a Geisha, we haven't really seen an English language film with a full Asian cast in mainstream cone,a release since The Joy Luck Club, which was phenomenal and also universal in tackling the themes of mother daughter relationships, and self-actualization. I'm so ready for a good love story and hope this film signals studios revisiting the romantic comedy genre, it feels as if we haven't had a good one in years.

@stylecollective Yes I hope the studios start to re-think ALL the pictures they invest their money in (they green light a lot of garbage). I've seen all the movies you listed, all terrific. Thumbs us for unique and different storylines, original premise, unseen twists and turns, good directing and GREAT acting. I am supporting this movie with my dollars because I know full price ticket sales make a difference as it helps to eliminate the anyone saying these kinds of movies don't make money.

I grew up in a state school, which is your everyday school in the suburbs of the UK. No posh school at all. Not private schooled. I think I just picked it up as I went along, and it kind of turns a little Transatlantic. My wife is-well, she has this international accent, so sometimes I do funny things with my Rs... Yeah. But I still pronounce water “woh-tuh.” Instead of “wah-ter,” like over here.

Henry Golding was my teenhood crush when I was watching travel shows of Malaysia. His wife Liv, worked as an emcee for an event I was working as well and she was just a total sweetheart. I was so surprised when I found out they were together but really, they're such a perfect couple. So happy and proud to see my country (Singapore) and Asians being represented on the big screen! 💕

I was kind of wondering why they casted him in this movie since he is half white because they do this same thing with half white actors playing black characters which gets on my nerves so I understand why Asian Americans/Asians are complaining. However, now I’m glad that he took the role because after seeing the movie, I can’t see Nick Young being played by anyone else. He is good and very charming in this movie and I can’t wait to see him in more films in the future. Crazy Rich Asians is a great movie and I hope that folks support it by going to see it so it does well. :) 👏🏽💯
