Makes me sad. My dad took me to the Flames very first game there. I liked how the players had to cross the concourse to get to and from their dressing room.
It was the only hockey game I ever got to see in the old building. Such a shame it couldn't have been integrated into the new plans. Losing the murals and that iconic horse sign were a huge loss to local history.
I'm not sure where the Red Deer Mine may have been located. There are many mines in the area, especially all along the Red Deer River valley, but I think most of them had closed by the late 70s.
Nice tribute to the Stampede Corral. Grabbed my three pack and took in all of the games. Never watched hockey there until the Corral Series but much of the history was before my time.
Sad to see that old building go but that was a fun experience to go and see the 3 games that they played in there rip stampede corral u r going to be missed
The Corral replacing Victoria Arena because the arena was out of date is false. The Corral was constructed due to a fire at the Victoria Arena which completely destroyed it. The arena sat where the Saddledome is currently located.
Not true. The victoria arena burned down in the early 60s. The Stampede Corral was built for the Calgary Stampeders hockey team in 1950 because Victoria Arena was inadequate. Look at the fourth picture under 1950: www.calgarystampede.com/heritage/history/building-the-stampede

Cool. I'm going to miss the old place, especially the giant cowboy sign outside.

Now THAT would have been a fun trip. I love hockey! I remember seeing Gordie Howe play many years ago. Hmm, 1970's?? Thanks for sharing your trip.
Oh, BTW, the Red Deer mine is it located near Red Deer Ab? A friend moved over to Red Deer around 84, haven't heard or seen him since...

Saw my first Flames game there when I was kid. It was against Toronto. I was a Flames fan back in those days. 😁
