I took a nap this evening and woke up to the news that Mark Pope is our coach. I was stunned and depressed. turned off all the devices and went to the gym for a late-night therapy session.
Got home and read Seth Davis's tweets, Rex Chapman's tweets, and watched that youtube breakdown of his offensive system that's going viral atm. Let the news marinate. And im feeling 1000% percent better......Still nervous as fuck, but I see the vision!
I was a 20 year old punk in 1996. That team which was co-captained by Mark Pope is the barometer I judge all great college basketball teams by (They would've curb-stomped the 2024 Uconn Huskies!)! So I know all about Mark Pope.....i'm not some asthmatic millennial dweeb who thinks UKBB began in 2009.
Mark Pope is literally a Rhodes Scholar with a 160 IQ who went to medical school while also playing in the NBA. He might be the smartest guy who has ever slipped a whistle over his neck. So give me a guy with the Mensa Brain, the work ethic and toughness of a journeyman NBA enforcer, who also has a burning passion for Kentucky Basketball and im bought in. If this thing works....it might really REALLY WORK! So cool one of the dudes I grew up idolizing has the keys to the castle and wish him nothing but the best of luck!!!
I truly believe with the right staff and NIL support he can absolutely win big. It will all come down to the kids he can recruit and the portal options he’s able to pick up. I love his system.

Take a breathe and calm down. Coach Cal wasn't getting the result BBN wanted either so let it play out. Mitch was never going to hire Pearl or Beard. Right or wrong, he wants a squeaky clean, no drama or allegations, guy to come in and build.
After the last 5 years I'm willing to to give it a couple more. I'm not saying it's a good hire, I'm not saying it isn't. But here we are. We can either give up or we can support, either way, it doesn't change Mitch's decision.
Coach Pope, if nothing else, will fully commit and put his heart and soul into this program. Just let it play out. What choice do we have. Give up? Nah, that's not what we do here at BBN. Think what you will about Mitch, but Coach Pope deserves our support. He's our guy now

I think UK is getting ahead of the curve with bringing in players with INSANE NIL deals. Look at Alabama, they made it to the final 4 and none of those players were on the team last year. It's about buying players now.
Kentucky will be MAXING thier NIL. I think Kentucky is actually getting ahead of the curve. Uk dodged 34 million in a buyout AND 10 million for having to pay a coach each year. Alabama went to the final 4 this year with NONE of the players being on the team from last year.

Recruiting is done. It doesn’t win anymore. NIL is gonna be there for mark where it wasn’t for Calipari. Fans should be excited, if not slightly tempered at first. He’ll do great.

Cal ran me off. Kentucky basketball, the thing I cared most about as a boy, no longer mattered to me because of John Calipari. I completely stopped paying any attention, but now that we have an Untouchable as head coach I'm incredibly excited for the future. Mark seems like a great man, and I hope he has all the success in the world at UK.
Pope has never really been able to recruit the level of player it takes to really compete, yet he still did. He didn’t win tourney games but he did a great job with what he had to work with.

This was a good hire. Someone who we believe has more Blue in his blood than Money in his blood. If BBN will get behind Mark Pope and support him and not rip him apart then I think he can put UK back on the right track.
If NIL doesnt come through like the Cal deal did, we are in trouble, but it sounds like Craft is on board who hated Cal. No NCAA tourney wins so far is concerning though.

Its crazy to me that college basketball seems to be the only sport where fans are held accountable instead of the head coach. Coach Cal did not care sbout Kentucky or winning championships. Which, is his entire job. Cal, at one of the most prestigious basketball programs in college, has had a terrible record the last 6 years, has refused to make changes, refused to take accountability and simply didn't care anymore. You know, the same things other fans from other schools, (looking at you Arkansas fans), have been ridiculing Kentucky fans for all season long. On top of his underperforming, he was still brought back and still had majority of fans support. Fans of all schools talk crap about their teams losing. Its natural and it's not going to stop. Cal was not ran off by fans. Cal left because he has underperformed, refused to make changes and instead of manning up and persevering, the coward left.

Hold on there, pardner. I know that all of the talking HEADS (ahem.... this means you) were "clamoring" for Dan Hurley. I wasn't. A lot of fans that I know weren't. There were a lot of names out there and I personally wanted Rick Pitino back. But when Mark emerged as a possible hire, I thought "I'm ok with that". Here's the thing: why in tarnation would we hire another version of "one and done"? The thing that most Kentucky fans at least of my generation had against Cal was that he did NOT care about winning titles or the tradition at Kentucky. At least, that was not his priority. He said that in writing. From that moment on I wanted his grifting ass out of Lexington and said so loudly, publicly, insultingly and often. I like the hire we made. I love Mark Pope, always have. It may take him a few years to get things on track but hey, we gave even Silly Guppie a few seasons to fail didn't we? I'm ok with the Pope decision and he would not have been as far down my list as he was some of y'all's. Stay tuned, I think we may have something durable here.

This has potential to be a really good hire. He is hungry and competitive and the man can flat out coach. IDC what anybody says, when you take BYU to Allen fieldhouse and beat bill self that's impressive. His teams are well coached, they play exciting basketball, kind of like Kentucky this past season, his offense was elite. With a top 50 defense. Mark pope a Rick Pitino prodigy, former Kentucky champion, has a 160 level IQ, the man has the potential to he a Home run hire. Another thing is for certain, he will come in and work his a** off to win..if he can recruit at even a decent level Kentucky will be back in the conversation once again. 💯💯

Mark Few and Randy Bennett OWNED him. BYU never won the WCC. Not the WCC regular season crown. Not the WCC post season tournament. Not once in twelve seasons of membership. Never came close to sniffing it.
One of two things must be true:

BYU has been a mediocre basketball program for the last decade.

I’m sorry I even watched this video. You sound just like all the people trying to justify the hiring of Billy Gillespie. These “feel good” hires never work. Remember North Carolina hiring Matt Dougherty? All the hoopla over the player returning to save the program? How’d that work out? Two years and a do over. Why the rush? Bring back Pitino with the expectation of grooming a new coach after he retires. We’ve gone through 5 years of nothing and even if Pope works out it will still be another 5 years of nothing. It’s hard to believe that this is the best that the greatest college basketball team in the country could come up with. We’re on our way to Indiana part 2.

Hurley also had won two NCAA Tournament games at Rhode Island. Pope has coached for nine years and has two appearances and no wins. I don't give a shit that he played at UK 30 years ago.
Rob Dauster, all I know is Mark Pope isn't in my top 10 of who I would want. He may not be top 50 actually. I would happily have taken Bruce Pearl with his baggage over this. I'd take Chris Beard and his baggage. I would take ANYONE with a resume of more than 0 tournament wins if this had been represented as a REBUILD here at Kentucky vs. being told we were get a proven head coach and then getting Mark Pope. Paying him a top 10 salary as a coach when he's not accomplished anything AS A COACH is unacceptable at Kentucky. As a player I loved having him here and am thankful that as a PLAYER he helped us win a national championship. However, as a coaching hire, I just can't get behind this. Rushed and panicked hire by Mitch Barnhart.

Give the new coach a chance? LOL, what choice do they have. This is a big time fail by Kentucky until Pope proves that not all the great hires are at big time programs. This is what I would have expected by ARKANSAS, not Kentucky. Similar to the Stan Heath hire from Kent State. If you're making millions without the Kentucky fan base, why would you want to be at Kentucky?
