  • After the failed attempt of Buquetia musca to parasitize the caterpiller, small arthropods are seen walking around on the Papilio machaon caterpillar (from 5:27 to 6:09 minutes) who are likely eriophyid mites (identified by Lisa Lumley the mite taxonomist at Royal Alberta Museum, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Eriophyidae are herbivores (some make galls), which could explain how they ended up on the caterpillar. There is no other connection between them and the caterpillar.
Identification Buquetia musca Dr. Hans-Peter Tschorsnig.
Biological observations on Buquetia musca (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera: Tachinidae), a parasitoid of Papilio machaon Linné (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)

If the caterpillar moults so soon after an egg is laid, the egg is essentially lost. I'm not aware that the caterpillar's eating the shed skin could result in parasitism even if the egg is eaten intact.

@James Merryman Thanks. It makes sense that an egg intended for ingestion would be small--otherwise it would be more likely to be broken by chewing (unless it's so hard it's like a "time release capsule".

I raised caterpillars under nets to protect them from these pests.

      Aren't caterpillars pest?
I usually get angry when I found them on Eggplant plant.

@@roskichan3001 Not all caterpillars are pests. The caterpillar in this video (Hyles euphorbiae) feeds on weeds. I operated a caterpillar farm, specializing in giant Saturniid moths. They are endangered in the northeast US. I presently rear and release Monarchs, another endangered species.

La mosca depósito parásitos sobre la oruga, ya en este estado la oruga muere a la hora de convertirse en mariposa pues el huevo de la mosca la mata en el proceso
