Oh my , your father is so right. There is a beauty of the tones of Marios' voice. Mario could sing English in a beautiful tone while many tenors cannot. They sound like they are singing through their nose. Mario could sing it all , the strength and tone of his voice was magical..

Lovely Vince. What a delight to hear your Dad speak first hand of Mario and his voice. How very fortunate he was to have seen and heard him in concert.

Thank you so much for this lovely meeting with your father. You posted it the day after my 84th birthday. It was The Toast of New Orleans that changed my life - he was also the most delightful comedian! I began listening to opera. I learnt to sing. I learnt Italian. I sent him a fan letter, and his office sent me that same black-and-white portrait that's on the front of the programme, postcard size, with his signature. I framed it. In a radio program of tenors, I always recognised his voice at once - and I knew them all. Unforgettable. I was happy to hear your father say that he sang without microphone, because that was another thing the haters said - "He's only a microphone singer". So many distinguished creative Italians in bonnie Scotland!

Hello, as a fellow Scot, I am wondrous that your story of Mario Lanza echoes mine. My dad loved Mario Lanza, and our house was rich with his beautiful voice. People think I am a bit weird because they haven't heard Mario's voice. I am grateful that his voice was part of my life. Anyone who had the privilege of hearing his voice, surely, must hear the most beautiful voice that earth might give us. Thank you for feeling the same as I do, of Mario. X

Thank you Vince and dad for this - I DID go to the stage door after the Newcastle performance and met Mario and he shook my hand. That was also in 1958 and apart from leaning on the piano he looked fine. My legs turned to jelly when I walked in and saw him sitting there and he signed a photograph I gave him which had been sent from Elsie Sword (then Kiss). He was the most handsome man I had ever seen, even more so than in his films. I even had the nerve to ask the doorman if I could go back in and he said no but he agreed to take another of my photos in to be signed. Mario had said "I know who this is from - the young lady who came in first".....I was THRILLED as I was only 15 at that time but had been in love with Mario since I was 9 years old. I wasn't able to get a ticket for that night's concert and had stood outside in the cold for the duration. I did manage to get a ticket for his next Newcastle concert however and I can totally endorse your dad's feelings about being at the concert he attended. Thank you to both of you, not only for this recollection but for all the wonderful work you do! It's a shame that your dad didn't go to the stage door!!!!!

What a beautiful video, Vince. Thanks, as always, for sharing it with us. I too got into Lanza from my dad. He was always a fan. I remember from being a kid, we had a new stereogram thing installed at home, I think my parents must've bought it second-hand since money was scarce back then. The guy that brought it asked for a record to be played to show us all that it was in working order. My dad instantly grabbed his "You Do Something To Me" LP and handed it over. I wasn't thrilled by this loud, operatic style voice but I remember dad closing his eyes and loving it. The stereogram was in the family home for years and gave the family lots of entertainment. Some years after, "Because You're Mine" (film) was advertised on Channel 4, so my dad insisted we all watch it. He asked me (I was 13 at the time) to record the songs from the film on an old cassette recorder, which I did. The film, to me at that time, was alright, nothing special. However, later that week I played the tape in my bedroom for some reason. The last note of the film's title song really hit me, hard. I listened again and again and couldn't believe the beauty of Mario's voice. I was hooked and had to hear more. I pestered my dad for info, learning that when he was young, he and his friends would watch Mario's films. Being one of eight and from a poor background, he couldn't afford tickets to the concert in Sheffield and sadly didn't know anyone that had seen Mario sing live. He bought me more records and as soon as I got a job I spent all my money on CDs and tapes of Mario. Dad passed away in June 1994, so it was only fitting that Lanza's Ave Maria and I'll Walk With God were played at his funeral. I'm 50 now and still regard Mario as the number one tenor. He'll always be my favourite and I thank my dear, departed father for introducing me to him and his fantastic voice. Again, thank you so much, Vince. Beautiful video

Vince: These are priceless memories from your dad, and it's such a beautiful thing to see a father and his son equally passionate about the same subject. I was moved by your father's reminiscences, and I loved the way you made us feel that we were in the movie theatre watching those Lanza films with him. And what a sweet touch to finish with the two of you singing "Behold"---and sounding remarkably similar!

Thank you Derek! It turned out nicely I think, of course a bit more prep and more time filming would have been great but it’s nice to have these memories captured.
Yes! The cinema moments are very effective and evocative. (And of course I had to track down the exact 1951 Tarzan release 🙄😜, the classic ”Tarzan’s Peril”🤣)
