Mousehold heath has featured so prominently in the history of Norwich. Although they might not be within this channel's remit there are a lot of former WW2 airfields within a few miles of Norwich. Thanks for uploading this video.
I was hooked as soon as I heard the propeller sound at the beginning! Loved the old Mousehold Heath Airport photos. A very interesting story about Douglas Bader's artificial leg being delivered to him by the crew flying out of Norwich. I learnt so much from your video - thank you!
Used to work Fitzmaurice Carriers out of one of the buildings on the left of Salhouse Rd. Never realised was airport. Wow amazing. Great vids. Cheers from Thailand.
Grew up in St,Faiths and was told about the old Cromer road before the airport. Fascinating to find out about the section outside Tesco (formerly the Firs pub)!
Thanks for another interesting video. My family and I travelled via Norwich Airport in the mid 70s. We flew from Shipdham to Norwich and then on to The Channel Islands. The terminal then was a series of Nissan huts extended to form a larger building.
Battle of Britain flight often flew in Norwich airport in the early 70's when based at RAF Coltishall, when winds prevented us flying into Coltishall. Still think of those days when we fly out on Holiday.
Absolutely fascinating John, thanks for sharing. I travel around the outskirts of the airport a great deal, sharing aircraft videos and slideshows on my channel, but I couldn't get my bearings on the barracks photo. I knew a little about the airfield at Mousehold but this was an eye opener.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you found it interesting. You might like this one too, which touches on the subject too. ruclips.net/video/D9r_vqtGh-c/видео.html
So interesting how even a relatively new technology can get consigned to history and location be totally unknown to most people, another great vid thanks
Another great video John. I remember (as a very small boy) going to the very last Open Day at RAF Horsham St Faith with my Mum when we lived nearby in Hellesdon - I imagine it must have been the early to mid 60's. I seem to remember that Meteors flew out of there whilst Lightnings were based at RAF Coltishall - I stand to be corrected by any aviation buffs!!
Fascinating. I knew that the current heartsease schools playing field was an airfield, and that there was a railway but not the exact location so thanks for that info. Interestingly, the land opposite the school playing field on heartsease lane was a POW camp.
I remember going up to the airport as a youngster in the early 80s and going into the then terminal building (I think it was just a couple of portakabins essentially), and also recall seeing an airship taking off around the same sort of time!
Nice video mate, loved the music. Would be cool if you could do a video based on NR3 area. Knowsley, Beaconsfield, Churchill Road, Silver road and the houses.
Interesting as always. It’s always my airport of choice when flying to and from Brazil or Asia for work thanks to the KLM link. KLM I think traces it routes from there back to Air U.K. and then before that Air Anglia.
Douglas Bader used to drink in the Rising Sun at Coltishall during the war. I’ve heard stories of him tapping his pipe on his artificial leg to the amusement of those in there
It's beyond me why the memorial plaque you illustrate is so badly sited on an earth bank facing away from the road and not more prominently displayed. Almost an insult to the men who died in the crash that it commemorates.

You're absolutely right, Geoff. It amazes me how many there were, and how they still shape the countryside around the county.

Thank you. Yes the propeller sound was good, wasn't it!

Thank you Keith. Always good to reach Thailand!
In the 1970's, Laurence, Scott, and Electromotors were still using 9, 10, 11, 12, and 15 Hangars at Salhouse Road Estate.
Thanks for that info.

Yes that does seem to be a fascinating legacy.

Very interesting. I didn’t know anything about this aerodrome or even that it ever existed. Thank you. 👍😃

Maybe an aviation buff will read this and confirm your memory. Or not!

Thank you - you might like to check out my video "Lost Norwich - Mousehold Heath" which gives a slightly different perspective.

Ok, thanks for the suggestion, I will investigate....!
Just to let you know I am working on a video of this area which should be ready in about a month.

Thanks Callum, I had no idea that would be the easiest start point when travelling to Brazil or Asia!
Really interesting, especially the Mousehold aerodrome.
Thank you John
Nice video stay connected.
Wow. I had no idea about the light railway.
can still just about trace the route from the corner of Gurney Road. ruclips.net/video/D9r_vqtGh-c/видео.html
you could sill find cats eyes on the heartsease school playing field in the 60's. a friend lived on Aerodrome Crescent
That's amazing, it doesn't sound too safe!
Very nice 👍🏼🙏🏿
Thank you.
Fantastic as always
Thank you
Apparently, the RAF didn't trust the German offer ref. Bader's replacement leg, so it was dropped during an air raid nearby - !
Thanks! 😃

Great story!
For what reason is a video on airfields in Norwich accompanied by weired space music ???
Thank you as always Gordon for your constructive and positive observation.

I must admit I'd never thought of it like that, but yes, good point.
