The south end of the island had air was full of vaporised oil, airport rammed with news crews, fields covered black with oil spray, dead and oil covered animals ... no one was going to recover that before it broke apart.

Thanks for the openness to show a failure as well. The video quality doesn't matter, more important is to show what challenges and surprises a rescue operation can have.
The Braer was doomed from the minute it went aground. I'm a Shetlander and can tell you that there's no way anybody would have salvaged her in January. BTW, it's not "The Shetlands", it's just Shetland.

The salvors were just making a show of doing something on the cliffside so as to get compensation for mobilizing. Whatever they might possibly be able to pump from there would have had nowhere to go. There aren’t enough tank trucks in all of England to take away that much oil. It was an impossible situation.
I remember this happening clearly. We got a new roof on our house from it. The oil was heavy in the air for day's after she broke up. As soon as she was near the shore & they couldn't tow her clear only 1 thing was ever going to happen. It wouldn't matter what salvage company was involved.
I politely disagree This failed salvage, and the Sea Empress show SMIT TAK to be almost incompetent. Unsure why any government would hire them, likely due to lack of competition. As the narrator said, these companies must be fully prepped year round to salvage. But wrecks such as these are quite rare. Just my opinion tho, source material i base my opinion on coming from RUclips, so i could very well be wrong.
@@colesteven1123 trust me, Smit and Mammoet are probably the best two companies in the world at what they do. Yeah they might have failed here but look at the odds they were up against, the seas round Shetland and Orkney and the north of Scotland are some of the worst in the world in January. Plus other local efforts to get a tow on her before she even ran aground failed due to the prevailing conditions, the captain and a few crew members were put back on that ship to try and get her undertow before she grounded and had to be lifted off again due to it being too dangerous.
This happened on my 14th birthday....I well remember helping comb the beaches here for seabirds and other wildlife tat was still alive and having to bag the unlucky ones that didn't make it =(
Considering that it was shot in that part of the world, most likely shot in PAL. The resolution and frame rate are different than what we use here in the US. They probably did not have a good non-linear editing system for converting the formats. There is terrible herringbone distortion, I wouldn't be surprised that they simply took a video camera (NTSC) and pointed it at a TV monitor, that would explain the miss-match. Really too bad, I'm sure somebody could have fixed it before uploading to youtube.
@@emptech also bear in mind it was filmed in 1993 well before the advent of digital technology and was most likely recorded onto vhs which will explain the white line dissipation if its been recorded off a t.v onto a tape.
i've seen the channel that has the original video, just some advise put a disclaimer in the description crediting the original source okay im not mad just giving very helpful advise
To me it seems inexcusable for any vessel, large or small, to set off on a voyage without all necessary equipment in full working order. This disaster should never have happened

This thing happen because owner of oiltanker was cheap pure simple.this a book about this stupid thing.the tanker cut corner,not well maintains,big storm,problems with water in fuel,argue cost for tug,the brits slack off yup,the coats guard a joke,then the ship show up door step and wreck everything.they still talk about here calgary alberta in oilfield and office in alberta pure negligence all finger pointing sad part.the north sea is tough and rough and respect if not you pay price period.don't forget canadian drill for oil in britain so word pass around fast.nice video thanks😮
