And before anyone brings up how bad of a matchup the Sonics were for them the Rockets at the time had a bigger forward lineup to matchup with the Sonics compared to the team that were swept a few years later. On top of that I felt the Suns were actually the tougher matchup out of two teams at this point. Barkley was more of a versatile player compared to Kemp and KJ was as much of a problem for the Rockets guards as Payton, if not more.
This was some great 90s ball. This was 20 years ago. Looking at the skill level and intensity you’d be crazy to think these guys couldn’t play in today’s NBA.
Denver was loaded with young talents with Ellis, Mutombo, Chris Jackson, Brian Williams, Pack, and Rodney Rogers. I am surprised this team didn't develop more and become a force in the West.
Seattle had been making progress leading up to this with Kemp and Payton. 1991- make playoffs 1992- win a playoff series 1993- win 2 playoff series Each year,, going farther, But in 1994, when it seemed like they would take that final step, they instead went backwards. The difference between 1994 and 1993 was that they had the best record in the NBA, and were expected to win it all. They have all those expectations going against the pressure of having to play a do or die Game 5 where they could become the first #1 seed to lose to a #8 seed. Not the same pressure as trying to beat the Jazz in Game 5 in 1993. And the way they played this game, it was obvious they were feeling that pressure.

My favorite player of all time Kemp was the main reason they lost this series he average 13 points on 37% shooting mutombo shut him down. Kemp miss 2 big free-throws at the end of game 3 as they were going for the SWEEP (best of 5 series) Denver tied it won in OT and never look back
I believe Kemp was strictly an inside player at this point, which is a problem when facing Mutombo. I noticed him shooting more jumpers when Seattle made the Finals 2 years later
@@redpillfreedom6692 That's why I feel the Sonics would've struggled with the Rockets in a series at this point. Kemp not being a jumpshooter meant he would have to play in the post often, and the Rockets had more guys to put on him who could give him problems like Thorpe and Herrera. In 96 both were gone he didn't have to worry about those 2 anymore. The other problem the Sonics would've had going further even if they had survived this series was their rebounding they were last out of all the playoff teams in that category, the Rockets on the other hand led the league in defensive rebounding.
All the teams had real talent. The lesser teams actually competed. The games had the complete package of 3's, fast breaks, and inside play. Those guys were in shape. A lot of actual action.
The Sonics were the worst rebounding team in the playoffs while the Rockets led the league in defensive rebounding, even if they had gotten out of this series that would've still gotten exposed in later rounds by more experienced teams. The Suns were actually the tougher matchup KJ and Barkley were more proven go to guys at that point compared to Payton/Kemp and a better rebounding team, whoever won that series was winning the West regardless.
@@ChrisM07 Seattle was always a thorn in Houston's side in the Hakeem era. They were the last team to beat them before their mini-dynasty and they were the team that ended the mini-dynasty.
@@redpillfreedom6692 I know the Sonics were always a tough matchup, but the Rockets had a stronger frontline with Thorpe and Herrera the Rockets did have the personnel to beat them. Plus the Sonics didn't have any real leadership at the time Kemp and Payton weren't consistent playoff performers yet. The Rockets on the other hand played more cohesively their system was built for the playoffs with them being a good half court team, that was the achilles heel of the Sonics.
The best 8th seed to pull of the 😢 upset. But they were the better team lofonso ellis 🔑 also robert pack fearless and of course motombo. Sonics put this team together a year ago still started learning to be a title contender. If this was a seven game series sonics would of found a way but it was a 5 game series. But hats off to the nuggets a team win
A big factor that caused the Sonics to lose the series was them being the worst rebounding team in the playoffs. If the Nuggets were able to exploit that more experienced teams definitely would've, that's why I believe the Rockets could've also beaten them they led the league in defensive rebounding. Plus Suns were the actual team to beat in the conference the Rockets were winning the West regardless after getting past them.
I can't believe the Nuggets didn't keep some of these players. I believe a core of Mutombo, Brian Williams, Pack, Stith, Rogers, and Abdul-Rauf would've been a perennial contender. They even got McDyess the following year.
They may have not been the favorites in the series (Denver) due to Seattles overall best record however , The Nuggets we're a very talented team [Matumbo , Pack , Ellis , Williams, Rauf etc...] KAT Game (today) is reminiscent of Perkins back when. Sonics had a Yung Gill nd Super Vet Ricky. 30+ blocks in this series for Matumbo (6/7 blocks Per game)
what could have been if Seattle had beaten Denver. I feel they easily beat the Jazz then the eventual Champion Rocket which they owned at that time. Finally we have a Knicks vs. Sonics finals which I feel Seattle wouldve won.
LOL and if the world was candy and nuts we all would have a merry xmas. That series is a perfect way to show that hard work beats talent won't work hard. They had WAY more heart than the sonics
Nah they won't, if Seattle can't beat an 8 seed they won't be beating any of the higher seeds. Same logic as why the Clippers wouldn't have won the chip last season, they couldn't beat the nuggs, no way they beat the lakers
They were down 0-2 going on the road against the Suns they didn't coast to the Finals. If anything the Suns were a better team compared Sonics who were actually the worst rebounding team in the playoffs.
@@mongoslade277 The Rockets with Thorpe at PF were a much tougher matchup because were a halfcourt type team which was the style the Sonics didn't like to play. It was when the Rockets played at a similar pace of the Sonics with Drexler and they had Chucky Brown at PF they weren't able to win a game. In that sweep the Sonics outrebounded the Rockets on the defensive end by a wide margin, that wasn't happening if Thorpe was there the Rockets often outrebounded teams on that end with him.
@@ChrisM07 in game four of 1996 NBA playoffs Shawn Kemp was having his way in the paint when chucky Brown or Robert was guarding him and would finish the game with 32
The Nuggets made them play a half court game, that's why I don't believe the "Rockets were lucky to avoid them" theory because the Rockets also played that style before Drexler was there they would've done pretty much the exact same thing. Plus there is a huge difference comparing Thorpe and Chucky Brown at PF.
2007 Mavs vs Warriors was not a bigger upset than this it's no way Denver should have won this game. Warrior's had a better chance than Denver versus Seattle.
Actually, Seattle's worst shooting games of that season came against the Nuggets. And the teams split the season series. The Sonics had a chance to close out the series in 4, but Kemp missed his FTs. And now they're in a do or die Game 5 facing the pressure of not wanting to become the first #1 to lose to a #8. They played this game like they had a straight- jacket on.
@@pomerlain8924 Actually there were 2 teams in the West the Nuggets and the...
Alot of explosive players on these squads. Pack had some serious lift. All these dunks and highlights, Kemp not really in any or many of them.
He ran into a mountain
Putting Mutombo on Kemp changed the series for the Sonics
Mutombo neutralized all that
The 8th Seed Nuggets upset the Number 1 Seed Sonics back in the 1994 Playoffs
It was a total shock to the NBA world.
Time for investors to bring back Seattle Supersonics!!!!
All the teams had real talent. The lesser teams actually competed. The games had the complete package of 3's, fast breaks, and inside play. Those guys were in shape. A lot of actual action.
Dikembe Mutombo is the greatest shot blocker in the history of basketball
RIP Mutumbo.
Houston can thank Denver for that favor
The Sonics were the worst rebounding team in the playoffs while the Rockets led the league in defensive rebounding, even if they had gotten out of this series that would've still gotten exposed in later rounds by more experienced teams. The Suns were actually the tougher matchup KJ and Barkley were more proven go to guys at that point compared to Payton/Kemp and a better rebounding team, whoever won that series was winning the West regardless.
@@ChrisM07
Seattle was always a thorn in Houston's side in the Hakeem era.
RIP
Seattle citizens stilll hate Mutombo that for sure
I can't believe the Nuggets didn't keep some of these players. I believe a core of Mutombo, Brian Williams, Pack, Stith, Rogers, and Abdul-Rauf would've been a perennial contender. They even got McDyess the following year.
Brian Williams got killed by his brother. Rip. Brian Williams
Abdul rauf doing what kaepernick did, refusing to stand for the national anthem.
Robert Pack showed up in this one
RIP Mutombo!
They may have not been the favorites in the series (Denver) due to Seattles overall best record however , The Nuggets we're a very talented team
[Matumbo , Pack , Ellis , Williams, Rauf etc...]
KAT Game (today) is reminiscent of Perkins back when.
Sonics had a Yung Gill nd Super Vet Ricky.
30+ blocks in this series for Matumbo
(6/7 blocks Per game)
They replaced the SuperSonics with the Storm 🤦🏿♂️
MUTUMBO LOOKS LIKE J.J. WHEN HE WAS ON THE FLOOR CLUTCHING THE BALL.
Mutombo watched olajuwon's highlight before this game
I think mutombo watched Olajuwon performance of last year in 93 vs sonics.
That Denver team nearly did it again against Utah in the next round!
R.I.P mutombo
30 YEARS AGO THIS UPCOMING TUESDAY
what could have been if Seattle had beaten Denver. I feel they easily beat the Jazz then the eventual Champion Rocket which they owned at that time. Finally we have a Knicks vs. Sonics finals which I feel Seattle wouldve won.
I agree , to this day I still can't believe Seattle lost that Playoff series to Denver, it just boggles my mind...
Seattle wasn't beating Houston.
LOL and if the world was candy and nuts we all would have a merry xmas. That series is a perfect way to show that hard work beats talent won't work hard. They had WAY more heart than the sonics
aaazzz090 nuggets had huge heart they got down 3-0 to jazz n forced a game 7
Nah they won't, if Seattle can't beat an 8 seed they won't be beating any of the higher seeds. Same logic as why the Clippers wouldn't have won the chip last season, they couldn't beat the nuggs, no way they beat the lakers
20 years ago today
It was at that time I knew the Rockets would win the Championship. 😄
They were down 0-2 going on the road against the Suns they didn't coast to the Finals. If anything the Suns were a better team compared Sonics who were actually the worst rebounding team in the playoffs.
Yeah. They didn't have to play Seattle who they Couldn't beat. Same thing happened in 1995
@@mongoslade277 The Rockets with Thorpe at PF were a much tougher matchup because were a halfcourt type team which was the style the Sonics didn't like to play.
@@ChrisM07 in game four of 1996 NBA playoffs Shawn Kemp was having his way in the paint when chucky Brown or Robert was guarding him and would finish the game with 32
@@ChrisM07 That Sun's team got popped by Houston in '94 and '95...blowing series leads two years in a row. The Sun's weren't shit
The NBA needs to come back to Seattle
28 years ago today
This game was box office
So were people supposed to just keep track of the score back then?
The Nuggets where down but not out!!!
Now the Nuggets are champion
Again what was the real reason behind the Sonics choking in the first round
The Nuggets made them play a half court game, that's why I don't believe the "Rockets were lucky to avoid them" theory because the Rockets also played that style before Drexler was there they would've done pretty much the exact same thing. Plus there is a huge difference comparing Thorpe and Chucky Brown at PF.
please tell me who you all feel was the best head coach between george karl and lenny wilkens
Rockets
I don't think people realize just how good of a defensive team the Rockets were with Thorpe, the Sonics shooting average had a significant increase after he was no longer there. Hererra was also gone at that point.
Por medio de Cristo, Dios perdona los pecados y hace las paces con todos
R. Peck was the best player on that night.
Pack not peck
@@hectorlopez1069 My bad
☝🏿
Man🤦 if the Denver bench players weren’t throwing up the worst shots in playoff history the nuggets woulda won this easily😂
look how physical the game was back then compared to now the refs from today would have a field day
And the 1990s offenses would thrive in today's NBA.
This what defense is
