    I understand that when you refer to “low level conflict” the term is being used in a geopolitical sense. Unfortunately, this same term as applied to Sudan and other places belies the unbelievable pain and suffering that the people in such circumstances are suffering. We in the West are so used to living in security and prosperity that we cannot begin to imagine what these people go through on a daily basis. And, unfortunately, these “low level conflicts” are largely unreported. Very sad.

    Interesting fact: a few days ago, a council of some North Korean "economists" came to visit Iran. Now Iran is not desperate to such an extent to seek economical advice from NK. Even worse, Iran pulled out a few missiles from the silos and erected them to show them off to the "economists" from NK. Isn't that funny.

    Good insight. I made that case at the start of the Ukraine war. The drone has made the tank obsolete as the main line weapon system in the military. Still to come are swarms of AI drones mounted with their own command and control that come in waves of hundreds targeting not only the objective but defensive stations as well. Along with that swarms of ground based droned with mounted rifles and sniper rifles that can sweep an area both urban and in trenches. All for 1/10th the cost of our current systems and without risk to personnel. After that counter strike drones, ECM's and deep strikes on control points - its a whole new warfare - on in which the 800 billion defense budget stands toe to toe with the 8 billion drone budget.

    Fully appreciate the accurate use/intention of the phrase "Persian scientists" in relation to their shortcomings. It shows that the longer/older historical achievements from centuries ago fade along with the power those peoples enjoyed. Any culture that used to be an 'empire' or major contributor to the world will never again achieve those level of success, power or influence ever again and now are just a sad watering down of those former conquerors, who themselves got conquered. This is why you see the death throes in Russia and China... desparately trying to remain relevant in a world that is largely passing their accomplishments farewell.

    Thinking about the economics point of view, the question of how expensive is it to stop these attacks versus how much does it cost to rebuild? Whatever they destroy is a pretty decent metric to consider as well. I guess one of the fundamental reasons why these kinds of weapons are not in major use by other powers is due to the relative capacities of already existing military forces. The US has been flying predator drones for so long, kind of doesn't even really make sense for us to invest in something that is less capable, even if there's a budget option

    UAE had their own F-16E/F Desert Falcons developed specifically for them. Unit cost was over $200 million each, whereas an F-35A is $77.9 million. UAE went all-out on the F-16E/F, even got their own engine for it from GE with 32,000lb thrust. Test pilots who worked on other test programs said it was the most smoothly-run fighter they had ever been involved with for the development cycle, mainly because the Pentagon wasn’t really involved. It was just Lockheed and UAE working together.

    So Peter, Good analysis over-all, but misses a few details when it comes to projecting these trends into the future.
    There really isn't a hard line between "Cruise Missile" and "Autonomous Suicide Drone"... but drones are typically seen as the more low-end side of that continuum. And that is inherent in the core aspect of drone warfare that you high-lighted: It costs more to shoot one down than it costs to launch one. But this is because the missile defense technologies are designed to shoot down high end high velocity electromagnetically hardened missiles. That isn't going to remain the case for long. Indeed we're already seeing, in the more advanced integrated anti-missile systems like Iron Dome, systems to match incoming targets with counter-measures commensurate to their threat level. As such, we are going to see, as drones become more and more relevant, a resurgence of high end EM warfare, an entry of lasers, a return of traditional anti-aircraft guns, all supplementing a diversity of anti-missile missiles. And all of these systems will be modernized and networked with advanced AI-enabled radars and sensors designed to not just locate but identify incoming threats in real time and then deploy just enough of the right countermeasures to neutralize it. It will be very expensive to develop such kit, but once developed, it will be relatively cheap to deploy and use it... This will be the defensive version of what you talked about when analyzing the HIMARS and its effectiveness being gated by access to US intelligence resources. The US and other developed powers will be happy to give you weapons and defense systems, but they will only work to capacity if they continuously supply you with intelligence and satellite images and air tracking data. Which means, by using their weapons, you become a wholly owned subsidiary.

    could laser air defense be an economic means against cheap drones?

    • @hahaimadecoy2942
      @hahaimadecoy2942 19 дней назад +1

      No the price for a military laser system is way to high you'd be better off trying to jam them exleast if we're talking about any nation that doesn't spend billions on military spending

    • @herrosix3816
      @herrosix3816 19 дней назад +1

      Yes and no, the time on target to aim them is a little hard to maintain. But it's about 13ish dollars of electricity per shot. The equipment to fire it is still fairly expensive but it is dropping as it hits scale production.

      @@herrosix3816 Rheinmetall Skyranger 30, plus theres a ton of anti dron drones, really not that hard to put a grenade on a drone and fly it into another drone. The cost of a modern grenade and military or close to grade drone is about 1500-4500 per untit depending on the type of tech used, Shaheeds were obsolete 40 years ago LOL!!, so is everything else Iran has, including the sand and insults to America.

    Persians could keep supremecy in this sector, and hold the jumpstart vs other nations, but not just about having best scientist, they are also the best most effectively sanctioned, They are manufacturing the drones with almost no access to global supply chains, and unable to order foreign technologies or components.

    Iranian technologists may not be top notch but practice makes perfect. Due to sanctions they gave done some really interesting medical research out side of Big Farma. Granted at the second trier but practical, understandable and applicable. Not bad.

    Shahid(شَهید): martyr
    The drone’s name is Shahed(شاهد) meaning Witness. I believe it is from Shahed verse in Quran. The Shias believe the Shahed is Imam Ali who was the right hand of the prophet Mohammed. What is more interesting is that Shahed verse is the one referencing Torah as a holy book which mentioned the signs of the prophet.
