New Hampshire native here, I've been watching your videos for years. Genuinely flattered to hear you speak so accurately and eloquently about my home state, just as you have about my adopted home of many years: Vienna. You hit so many important nuances: Concord pronunciation, malaise toward Massholes, etc. Thanks for doing us proud!
Do borrow your grandma's old Suburu Outback with the "This Car Climbed Mt. Washington" bumper sticker and you won't have any problems.
There is no sales tax or income tax, but there is a meal tax when you order at a restaurant. There are also no deposits on cans or bottles. Be really careful when driving. Helmets are not required for motorcyclists, so be alert when changing lanes. If you exceed the speed limit: you WILL get a ticket; the tickets are wicked expensive; and staties are everywhere! Don't go exploring in the woods on your own on unmarked trails, especially in the fall during deer hunting season. Hunters are everywhere.
The hunters are annoying. My in laws live in Derry and have to constantly contend with people hunting in their land even though it’s posted everywhere private property
Meals tax is 9%, even higher than MA or RI
We don’t have sales or income tax.. but our property tax and electric bill make up for it. 😅😂
Meal tax is 8.5%. And while there is no general sales or income tax, there is a tax on dividends and interest earned over a certain amount. Also, there are a lot of fees for everything. It costs me 4 times as much to register my car in NH than it did when I lived in New Jersey, plus I have to pay extra to get the state car inspection (which was included in the NJ car registration).
@@jimtrue1465 Dividend and Income taxes are ending this year. 4% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2023, 3% for taxable periods ending on or after December 31, 2024. This tax will be repealed effective January 1, 2025. NH does a lot more pay as you go type billing. Tolls on roads to pay for highways. Parking fees at state parks to pay for the parks. Only state park system in the country that is self-funded and doesn't receive tax dollars.
"Flatlander" is also used in VT. As someone originally from OKC, I was the "flatlander" when I moved there. Now living in NH and I love both states. The only thing I don't recommend about NH: That maple syrup candy. My kids called it "nightmare fuel."
Ha ha #1 is don't mention you are from mass... Legit...
For real. The inferiority complex is deep with NH folks.
@@TarrinLupo what about NY lol
I've been watching you guys for years and I'm so honored you're doing my home state! Hope you had a great time enjoying our incredible lakes/mountains and please eat all the amazing seafood you possibly can!
Thank you so much for visiting NH!! Great video and travel tips. Also, thank you SO MUCH for pronouncing our state capital correctly!!! I hope you and your family had a wonderful time 😊
As a NH native living in the south it is great to hear Concord pronounced right.
Most of us "flatlanders" (really original "insult" by the way...) pronounce it the correct way. It's your dialect that ruined the word "concord".
@@alex31245 I can tell you're a fun person to be around.
@@JerryKosloski I "conquered".
Definitely visit Portsmouth if you’re around coastal NH! Fall is definitely the most beautiful time to visit but the winter & summer in the White Mountains is also incredible, especially if you like Skiing/Snowboarding or hiking!
Concord Grapes should be pronounced the same way, they where first cultivated in Concord Mass. Con kerd
The term "flatlander" is also way to sometimes vent about being overly touristed. Between the lakes, the foliage, and the skiing, NH gets a lot of tourists, which can gum up the works for locals. So definitely put on your "good tourist" hat.
Thank you for pronouncing Concord correctly.
That being said, don't bother visiting it. Go to the mountains, lakes, seacoast.
I was raised in Manchester NH and live in MA now. I miss it there.
why would u downgrade like that hahahaha
I can't speak for everyone, but people from Connecticut generally stock up on booze when passing through NH because there's no taxes.
When we used to go to Maine we would stop at that liquor store off of 95. And then again our way back.
In Pennsylvania, you have to go to the state store for your wine and liquor. Usually, you have to buy your beer from either a beer distributor or a convenience store. If you go to a beer distributor, they might make you buy a case of beer.
That has changed. You can buy beer and wine in some grocery stores and even some Sheetz or Wawa locations in PA, but you can't buy large quantities at a grocery store unless you make more than one visit or transaction to buy that amount. You still need to go a distributorship for an actual case of beer.
Going to NH and MA next month for the 1st time and can't wait😊
Any tips and travel ideas are appreciated 😊
Don't stay in the left lane if you aren't passing anyone
Also get pancakes at Flapjacks in Lincoln NH
@@rese7878 Don’t show up blasting music in a Honda Civic or Nissan Altima with Massachusetts plates and you should be alright.
@saviinicole2200 lol good to know, but I'm getting a rental, so good lord I hope it's not either of those😆
I’m planning on going to visit Lee New Hampshire this fall Haunted overload I can’t wait
I’m from NH, and I’ve never heard the term flat lander. I’m 23, so maybe it’s a generational thing.
Otherwise, great list. As my username suggest, I am from the seacoast. If you aren’t particularly interested in swimming or warm weather, it’s completely beautiful during the winter, and also empty.
@@sarahoftheshire sorry but the sea coast is northern mass that’s why you haven’t heard it.
@@Fastmini NO.
Your entire state the backyard.
Flatlander is used all over to describe city folk driving slow on country roads, especially around curves.
2:22 That guy walked by at just the right moment
Moose are terrifying, they're humongous and dumb as rocks. I'd rather meet a wolf or a bear than a moose
A moose once bit my sister.
Wish you had some footage of it not raining in NH! It does rain here but don't want to give Europeans the impression it's always wet
My state!
I have vacationed in New Hampshire, maybe 22 times, most of them was in the Mt Washington area the highest point in New England and I am from the lowest point(highest point less than 1000 ft.) And I have never heard anybody say flatlands. But I have heard Masshole and Mainiac. BTW, beer and vine can be found in grocery stores. Tell your European friends the price is the price and. VAT is not hidden in the price.
I've been to New Hampshire so many times as a New Englander so I'm gonna watch this with my girlfriend because she's from New Hampshire!
Maine video next?? Please lol. I don’t believe there is a Maine specific video. I’ve been watching/waiting for at least a decade!
My mom 👩 had traveled to New Hampshire, and it was to the North Conway. Me, I had never been to New Hampshire.
Alas, I do know some flat-earthers in NH. Shrug.
Glad to see you mentioned Lost River Gorge, though. Did you fit through the Lemon Squeezer?
I might go to Blackpool to do some light peeping this year…
There's a fantastic RUclips channel called Trout and Coffee which does an amazing job showcasing Vermont.
I used to live in plaistow for 6 months back in 2014
Weed ain't legal though...MA native
"Live Free or Die" but you can't sell weed or liquor 🙄
@@JoeJaJoeJoe you can't sell alcohol? Well, at least you don't have to wear seatbelts or helmets
The biggest don't: don't talk to an elderly woman in keene who is a former New Yorker. That's my sister, and she'll chew your ear off!
Wait, please don't go to Hampton Beach. It's an absolute cesspool. Drive to OOB or Salisbury beach.
We go to Newport NH alot since we have a fifth wheel trailer up there and we literally stay in the white mountains once a year during the Massachusetts spring break in April for just a week at bluegreen vacations south mountain resort in Lincoln NH and they literally redoing the indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs and that is the only location that they have where the hot tub age requirements are 5 and older but the rest of their locations are 16 and older and when it's not spring break we still go up there to spend time with our grampy there I get the hide-a-way bed in our 5th wheel trailer and we have a black plastic tub for the trailer in our cellar right now with a few ice molds triceratops' skeleton a big steggie with baby steggie and his friends a battleship one and your traditional ice cube mold with stuff from our neighbor Matt a pot for a pound of noodles we got one up there for half a pound of noodles not a lot for our family us 2 girls so me and my sister and our brother and our mum and dad and my bed linen and yes u don't see my bed until you remove the sofa cushions and fold it all out or it won't be called a hide-a-way bed 😅😂
Come to NH and spend your tourist dollars. Then leave! 🤣
Don't forget about Manchester, the state's largest city and home to the Currier Museum of Art and the Lego Millyard and the Palace Theatre
Don’t go to Hampton Beach, there are lots of good beaches in New England, and Hampton Beach ain’t one of them.
I went there for the first time in August last year with some friends, enjoyed it a lot actually.
Oh its fun, its just a tad gross.
Best beaches in New England are in Rhode Island and Cape Cod
hahaha yeah i’m done with hampton, it’s way too crowded for what it is
Wallace Sands Beach. 👍
Any hotel recommendations for family of 4 for a 2 day stop on a road trip
We will be coming back from a first time visit to Bar Harbor traveling down toward NJ
we call people flatlanders here in Vermont but it's a non-compliment for anyone not from Vermont.
Regarding maple syrup, if you come to Ohio, please outour mapel syrup. Many states have wonderful maple syrup.
Better yet: don't eat fake maple flovaored syrup. Yuck!
I’ve never thought of visiting New Hampshire tbh
They put the liquor stores on the highway so us Massholes can get our tax free liquor when we're getting away for the weekend.
New Hampshire is the last place in the U.S. I will try living before leaving the U.S. for good..
Do they use "flatlander" for people from Vermont? If so that's clearly inaccurate on its face.
No. Vermont calls them that too
i am from new hampshire and i have never called anyone a flatlander lmao
My first don't: Don't get smuggled here just because your meth business out west is collapsing.
lol they named their capitol conquered ok
You are aware that other states refer to it as Cow Hampshire
Why?
Number 1: dont visit New Hampshire
Come on, it's a nice place
The White Mountains are beautiful
Don't number 1:
- visit
Is this just an advertisement for NH?
Cmon Mark, do better.
Another one I would add would be don’t underestimate the mountains. I’ve seen dozens of unprepared people try and hike them just because they aren’t as big as the mountains out west. They still have over 3,000 feet of elevation gain and go straight up. I’ve seen multiple rescues over the years and it’ll cost you a pretty penny. Stick to shorter hikes with a view point and don’t try to hike up Washington or Lafayette unless you are experienced. Take the train up instead or some mountains like Cannon have lifts going up you can take. Also be prepared for the vast difference in temperature from the bottom to the summit. Can be 20 degrees cooler with unforgiving wind. Also don’t start talking about West Coast mountains we absolute hate it.
I second this, especially Mt. Washington. Visitors from the Rockies just see tiny 6k mountains compared to 14ers, but the mountains are located in the vortex of 3 front systems. Tornado strength winds and freak blizzards can happen anytime of the day or year. The strongest wind on Earth was recorded at Mount Washington. Many people have been killed from weather. Definitely stick with transport to the summit.
@@E_23017 Having climbed Mt Washington several times (and the whole Presidential Range for that matter), people who take the cog railway or drive up to the summit need to realize that while it may be summer at the base, it could well be winter at the summit. I've seen many tourist shiver in their T-shirts and shorts when they get off the train at the summit.
Yes, the amount of people who think they can casually hike the Lafayette Loop is insane. The Franconia Ridge loop, Hi-Cannon trail and even the Kinsmans are not for beginner hikers. I would also add that there are certain trails that are very much one way up, such as the Flume slide trail. Tourists who don't know this face being airlifted or even worse death. It's important to research the mountains you're hiking before attempting to climb them. It's equally as important to check the weather, you don't want to get stuck in the presidentials in bad or questionable weather.
Nice! But as a transplant I can testify that Flatlander 'ain't no compliment' I once heard an old logger talk to a friend that had relocated from Mass years ago who said my my kids were born here so they are Native NH, the logger replied, 'if your cat crawled into the oven and had kittens you wouldn't call 'em muffins!' LOL ,I've been here over 30 years, LOVE NH! The Skiing brought me here! Thanks for a nice video!
As a 57 year NH native this is a very good video!
Cool to see you do a video on NH! Make sure to visit Portsmouth if you are looking for more than just nature. One of the best walkable and quaint downtowns around. You can even take a Sholes cruise or a Whale Watch out of Rye!
Or visiit John Jone's abode!
Definitely visit Portsmouth if you’re around coastal NH! Fall is definitely the most beautiful time to visit but the winter & summer in the White Mountains is also incredible, especially if you like Skiing/Snowboarding or hiking!
Also dont go to Manchester for safety
DON’T be surprised if the full moon is always visible on the Mt. Washington cog railway !
Good evening Mark! Canadian here!! The 3 states I would like to visit in the US (in order) are: NH, Maine and Vermont. I got hooked on the first two watching a tv show: North Woods Law. Vermont is on the list because as Empire Lloyalists, that is the state we left! 😊 🇨🇦❤️.
Here's a "do"...
DO pay attention to the posted height and weight restrictions on our covered bridges! Many are historic and quite old.
Go to the Flume ...its my favorite place when i visit NH
I'd love to see more American cities. I know you've done a lot but this is great
I wish you would have talked about driving more.
Many rural single lane roads that have speed limits of 50. Too many out of staters STILL think they need to tailgate. In NH, locals don't get right square behind the car ahead. They back off, respect the drivers, safety and get to relax and enjoy the scenery because if you are so close to the car ahead, you have little time to react if they break. You simply can't relax and enjoy the views!
Worked at a hotel in Concord. The amount of "What happened to no taxes?" when people looked at their folios and didn't realize we have the Rooms & Meals tax instead of sales tax.
I grew up in Manchester, NH, and I didn't hear the term 'flatlander' until recently. I wonder if it's just said in certain areas? Kind of like bubbler? lol
'Massshole' is pretty popular.
@@superdoobo Haha I lived in Mass for college so I'm aware🤣
Yeah, flatlander is much more commonly used once you get to the mount washington valley
@@liamjthompson8311 ah okay! That makes sense!
Sounds really good 🤔
Never thought of maybe going to New Hampshire
Welcome to new England ❤
Born and raised in NH, and I've been watching your channel for years. Thank you for everything you said about my wonderful state. You pretty much nailed it. Next time you visit us, check out my two favorite spots - Schilling Brewery in Littleton NH for their pizza and beer. Seriously order the apple chicken maple bacon pizza, and check out their tap list. And in the southern part of the state in Mason, there's the cutest, quaintest lunch restaurant you'll ever visit. It's called Pickity Place. You'll need a reservation though, so go online to check out their monthly menus and book. Otherwise, maybe skip Hampton Beach and go to Wallis Sands instead, especially if you have kids. It's much quieter and nicer. Skip Manchester. Skip Nashua. And yes, watch out for massholes and leaf peepers!
Hi Mark! Good afternoon. Thank you for uploading. Great info! Hey, I actually hope I can visit London in February or March, hoping it can be a little cheaper? LOL! I have been told and warned that London is very expensive.
I want to stay in a hotel in Central London, as I want to be close to everything in London. It would be my first time in Europe, and want to explore the UK, as I'm hoping it won't be much of a culture shock. I'm from California. In your opinion, is central London as expensive as Times Square in New York City. I was only able to stay in NYC for 6 nights, because it's so expensive. Will I make it in London, Mark, for 6 nights? Will the weather be decent? -Henry Orea
Flat lander is a Vermont thing not a NH thing but I guess since they’re state neighbors it’s kinda the same
Flatlander. Might as well be something ancient Dutch related.
Yep. Been there done that.

Brother Cadet! When did you grad? 12' here for me, but civilian
@@prezac7 all love brother. Class ‘96. Our Cadre were still part of the Old corps and we felt the pain 🤣. Different times.
I was there for the 200th in 2019. Place has really changed and upgraded.
We know a guy with a son there now. Thank you for your service. My god daughter's dad is a Marine. He and my cousin started OPFOB a place for veterans.
@@jocelynwoltersworld Right on! The corps of cadets has grown. It's been an honor and privilege to serve the nation in combat and abroad.
much respect to your godfathers dad serving. 🫡
@The508ranger please look up OPFOB. If you or any of your batlle brothers/sisters need to get away and get together with people who get it, they are an excellent group of veterans, and they do a pile of good stuff.
Flattered you would do a video on my home state. Thanks for visiting and yeah the moose can be dangerous. 😊
You did the Granite State justice. There is so much to do here that it's impossible to fit it all into one video. That last bit really spoke to the character of our State, and I'm flattered. We also have some fantastic wineries and breweries to check out. Several classic diners should you get hungry. Salem has Canobie, but we also have a number of other family friendly amusement parks up north. Storyland, Santa's village, Clark's Trading Post is my favorite... Watch out for wolfman once you cross the covered bridge though.
Do you mean canobie lake park in Salem?
@@MarcoRodrigues-jc1re Yes, of course. I actually used to work in the rides department there when I was a teenager. Thank you for catching the typo. Suppose that's what I get for not rereading.
For a second when you said the local name for Concord i thought you said Kanker which is a illness and big insult and swearword here in Netherlands. Kanker means Cancer is dutch.
Regarding crime and safety in NH, our statistics are made possible by two very important factors; Demographics and the Second Amendment. Per capita, NH is at the top of the list for firearms ownership.
As a masshole that visits NH often, I enjoyed this video.
😂😂😂
I keep meaning to visit NH more often. It's less than three hours away but I forget how much I liked it when I was a kid.
It’s really pronounced Kon’Kid.
Its pronounced "Con-kid"
Can I ask where I can buy baby hamsters?
Love NH. Spent 2 weeks in early 21 in Concord (as you said it) for the Army. Drove through VT Greeen Mts and NH Wite Mts in whiteout snow to get there. Through W Mass, Upstate and W NY, through Cleveland back to Indiana. Cool places. Saw Portsmouth and the sub base and the seashore on a sunny Sunday in March.
Definitely visit Portsmouth if you’re around coastal NH!
NH is such a beautiful state but Concord definitely does not capture the beauty!
The donts of New Hampshire . DONT GO !
Flatlander is not a nice thing to call someone. Normally used like “f**king flatlanders”
you did not say this ..... But if you want 2 Buy Fireworks .... this is the Northern State That Sells Fireworks ........
Flatlander is not really a term of endearment, it can be used in several ways from teasing to downright insulting.
I’m from NH originally and live in Maine now. Flatlander is common in both states and it’s not a compliment lol. And they will call each other flatlanders lol.
So excited when you mentioned Cardigan Mountain, I actually grew up in that area and still have friends and family who live there 😊
Just remember if you're moving here don't bring the shit you left behind in this state you abandoned
I have never ever in my life heard "Flatlanders" and I've lived on the border of New Hampshire over 50 years
Ah Triple H's home state
Hills there not mountains

Agree with this video. I remember going up to the whites during fall and the turn off I95 at Lincoln was backed up about a mile to take the Kancamagus Senic Biway. Keep your eyes open during fall.
Love my home, miss it terribly
*93. That exit backs up a lot in the fall, and certain days in the winter
When you go camping in the New Hampshire campsite, don't be surprised by the trumpet sounds from Satchmo the Sasquash. 🎺
