Cesar wasn't in My Mother Told Me. It was before J. None left the group. They were all so miserable during this shoot. It was very hot in Orlando and the air conditioning went out and they were wearing those heavy costumes. This is what dedication looks like.

Geoff does not usually flirt with the camera as Cesar so often does, but here he definitely knows what effect he's having on us with that basso profundo. Shields and spears, indeed.

Voiceplay is truly a group where every member carries his share of the weight. Pause all you need to, if folks don't like it they can go watch the original because this is a reaction video.

@MIracleofSound, a/k/a Gavin Dunne, wrote this song for Assassin’s Creed, so you’re right. If you haven’t heard his version with Peyton Parrish, you really should-it’s so different from this there’s no comparison so it’s possible to enjoy both for what they are.
Yes, I definitely hear that subharmonic drone through the first part (and other parts of the song). Someone suggested that it was looped, but it’s not-you can hear some variations in tone and the vibrations change. I also agree Geoff’s crazy low notes are kind of their (his) schtick-it’s always the first thing new reactors respond to, and it seems to intrigue people so they stick around for more, so I don’t blame them.
My ONLY grump is that because those low notes blow people away, they sometimes overlook how really amazing everyone else is. Geoff is incredible-you NEVER hear a bass that low that is that silky and gorgeous, but section out everybody else here and they’re all extraordinary. I’m glad you’re doing that, catching Cesar’s berserker fierceness, Eli’s rock god voice, Layne’s insane beatboxing, J’s rap section (he scares me a little with his intensity there). They’re ALL so amazing!
Also glad you noticed the work that was done in post. It adds a new dimension that is outstanding-that single note in The Golden Hour still sticks in my head as what heaven must sound like, and it works just as well for Valhalla. That said, I’d really love to hear a track of just their unadjusted voices. I bet they crushed it. The post was just icing, if that makes sense.
Great analysis, and NEVER apologize for stopping and going back to point something out. This is why we watch reactions!

So love your reaction! You made me laugh despite a re-do of a root canal, so thank you! J. None’s flight was three hours late, no AC in the studio so sweat blotting was a thing. And Eli carried so much weight - read the credits! P.S. He and Cathy are the designated insomniacs, were messaging in the middle of the night just before the shoot.

I really enjoy your reactions!! I would never ever had thought that a rap would fit in this song, but VoicePlay is just experts at coming up with the craziest ideas - and make them work!!🤩😁 You’re correct, the rap was new for this version. Layne did the arrangement, but someone else wrote that great rap for VoicePlay. Geoff wrote that extra bridge in Golden Hour, and he has added lyrics in his song that comes next week too, so perhaps there’s a new pattern of additional lyrics here? I’m hoping we’ll get an entire original song eventually 😊 (there are three shorts that are VP original, but that’s all I think). Yes, you’re remembering right, J None was in My Mother Told me and Cesar was in Hoist the Colours.

Vikings would do a thing called Flyting, which was basically poetic rap battling. So the rap is actually a very Viking thing to do! If we had true modern Vikings, they would rap battle, lol! 💙💜❤

So I guess you kinda liked it 🤣🤣🤣
Patrons have been privy to it for a while now have started growing back brain cells so we’re able to watch it again and enjoy the rest of you having your brains ooze out your ears.
I love that they have J returning home in this. He’s been away and now he’s coming back where he belongs.
Layne did the arrangement and Eli the amazing backgrounds. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (Full wall!) led screens.
In My Mother Told Me Eli was a beserker. He obviously has recruited the whole group now. Even Cesar was scary. I really like that J came in partway like he was returning home to his family of VoicePlay.
The music in the outro is the karaoke track. The background vocals and it could be a piece on its own because it’s also gorgeous.

Odin would give a restrained, yet approving, nod to your reaction!! I was VERY happy to hear that at least ONE reactor thinks that Geoff sometimes uses 'gratuitous basement notes.' I have thought that for a long time. I smiled at the 'validation.' In THIS piece, his rumbling not only belongs, but it also really enhances the impact of this fierce, aggressive 'war song.' I suspect that 15 second B0 registered in the USGS Earthquake tracking system. 🙂 They are all great, as usual. I have watched this video (the 'official' version and reactors) at least a dozen times. How on EARTH did I miss the similar makeup as they used in "My Mother Told Me??" Great comment! J convinces us that rap originated with the Vikings!! Cesar shows he can be FIERCE! Layne is astounding (nothing new there). Ellie just KILLS it (as always). What a fantastic piece of music AND art! I agree with Odin... your reaction was SO good!! Best I've seen yet!! Liked and subscribed!

I understand and, to some extent agree with, the point about Geoff's lows. There is, however, a very valid reason they may have. This is only my personal speculation, but when you're not as well known, but have something very unique that will make people talk about you and share your work, you USE it. That being said, even when I find the lows overused, I understand why they would do it. ❤

They did wear the same clothes and have the same make up as My Mother Told Me. However, Valhalla was where Viking warriors went if they died heroically in battle. With that being said, in my opinion at least, My Mother Told Me was them going off to battle and one of them dying (hence why they turn their back to the camera at the end) and this song is them being in Valhalla, i.e. they're all dead, and J None finally dies and joins them in Valhalla. Thus when they are looking at the ships, they are watching a battle taking place on Earth. That's just how I see these two songs. I could be completely wrong though.

Great reaction- I love this one! Don't worry about pausing too much and highlighting and repeating parts that blow us all away! Yes you are absolutely right about the characters from "My Mother Told Me" coming back as both of these songs are from Assassin's Creed. Jose Rosario was in "My Mother Told Me" before Cesar joined Voice Play- Cesar is wearing the hooded robe and took over Jose's character this time and really kicked our butts along with everyone else. This is really epic and I really enjoyed your reaction and appreciation for all of the talent of each member in Voice Play!

If they can take such a simple song and turn it into this masterpiece... Imagine Eli if they did something like Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"? I'm honestly having a hard time imagining how they'd improve it but if anyone could it would probably be these living Muses that we know as "Voiceplay".

  • @MiladyMacabre

Yes, Rick and Renette did an excellent job of recreating the looks from My Mother Told Me, plus added touches like runes for VoicePlay on Cesar's face and Geoff's arm. Also both J (on his face) and Eli (on his arm) are sporting the Norse rune symbol for music, tónlist. Cesar, who wasn't in MMTM, is wearing the robe Jose wore in MMTM. (And you can find returning characters in their post-apocalyptic videos, Warriors and Dream On) Interesting tidbit, this was shot in a volume studio, much like The Mandalorian. It's not green screen.

Cesar wasn't able to be there but the thought with the makeup is that all the four "in voiceplay" in this video with Cesar this time is that they died in the battle ensuing from My Mother Told Me and J none didn't at least as quickly and that's why his makeup is the exact same from that previous video and he's being called to Valhalla; "Valhalla calling me" is the line that JNone sings exclusively (other than an eco being sung by the others after that lyric)
