Peavey stuff from the 70s-00s used to be what we used here in the South because Mesa/Marshall/Fender/Gibson were too expensive. Peavey PAs were really common in Southern clubs and bars.
Peavey stuff wasn't flashy, but it was inexpensive and reliable--ideal for the working musician.
I was rarely a fan of Peavey guitars because most were Fender Strat copies and not designed for metal. But, Peavey basses like the Foundation series were solid, as were the active Dynabasses. Many of their pickups were proprietary designs.
Then Peavey lost the EVH endorsement, production was outsourced from Mississippi to China, "Undercover Boss" happened, and things became a mess.
People ignored this bass for years because of its 70s design aesthetics. Then people started buying them used on Reverb. Now they're a hipster collectible.
I believe the bass has somewhat complex controls for phase/series/split coil/parallel--things that are seen on guitar but no longer that common on bass save perhaps higher end Stingrays.
Today's hifi Warwick-inspired active bass pickups seem to have little use for the flexibility of passive wiring designs and prefer to use active EQ circuits instead.
Some luthiers also might take issue with weight = sustain.
My former guitar maintenance/luthiery instructor at Musician's Institute, John Carruthers, is not a fan of heavy instruments (>8 lbs.) for sustain. John helped Rick Turner design EMG pickups and did setups for Jimmy Hendrix.

I've got a 1979 T-40, which I bought for £250 in the pre-internet days, when they were still unpopular due to being made by a computer controlled jig instead of actual people.
Yes, it weighs an absolute ton, but it sounds like a beast. It also has a brilliant control system that's designed to mimic other basses. The tone controls actually tap the coils as you turn them.
It also looks sexy as Hell.

I’ve got an ash ‘79 T40. It’s a tank, but it’s versatile. For those that don’t know, with the tone knobs on 10, both pickups are single coil. When you get to 7, they become humbuckers, then rolling down more takes off the high end. It’s also got a phase switch, that with some experimentation with the pickups, will grant you even more tonal variety.

I worked at a Peavey dealer in the eighties during my college years. Yes, T-40s are heavy. They did do a slightly revised version where they gave it a stomach cut, removed the rubber covers from the blade pole pieces, and added some colours including yellow and red. There was also a single pickup version called the T-45 which had no pickguard. I owned the T-60 guitar version, wish I still had it. Peavey did an all-walnut prototype called the T-62 that was just as heavy as the T-40. They were revolutionary because they were the first guitars made with CNC machinery.
