My wife and I have 2 long-haired mini dachshunds (black and cream is 10, blonde is 2), they're the best. We were able to get them trained pretty easily, the older one was a good example for the younger one. I think one of the most important things is getting small stairs/ramp for them so they aren't jumping down from the couch and bed, the impact is really bad for their back/joints. They also need exercise each day or they get really bored which then causes them to act out. I take mine on a 90 minute hike each day. Seeing dachshunds explore the woods is just pure bliss. They are really adventurous and it's awesome seeing them sniff things out and explore.

Everything you are saying in this video I am like YESSSS!! My mini dachshund barks at almost every dog he sees (even though this has gotten much better) and this is after extensive training, etc. They are just on high alert and I've come to accept it versus before I thought that all dogs kind of just wanted to play and were quite. Also, he wasn't fully house trained too until 1 year - and it wasn't for lack of training or effort. It was like a switch went off and one day he had no accidents moving forward EVER! He always knew what was right or wrong (they are such a smart breed) but its whether he wants to obey or not.

fortunately I live in an apartment where people are walking by all the time with their dogs. So he is used to people and dogs walking by. So he stays relatively quiet. He only just started growling at some people (usually the ones without dogs oddly enough haha)

Hello. I've owned a longhair rabbit dachshund for 14 years. Everyone in my neighbourhood loves him so much. Since I've always done a lot of exercises with him, he hasn't gotten any spine disease. He still is active and doesn't bark without a reason either. So he is truly the perfect dog.

My dachshund doesn’t bark!! He is a RARE dachshund. He is very stubborn though haha. I feed him a very strict diet and NO human food to keep his weight stable and less risk for his back. I have a ramp he goes up and down to my bed but he sleeps in his kennel at night so he doesn’t jump while I’m asleep (also so that he doesn’t hog the bed because man he LOVES to).

My Ollie is 7 months old. He is so stubborn with house training. Didn't help that I got him in winter, because they tend to have an aversion to the cold. So he refused to potty outside because it was so cold. But now that it is warming up in Canada, he loves going outside. And he hasn't had an accident in a few days. So we are making progress. But I have had many days where I would literally cry because he would have accident after accident and just chew stuff and not listen. So yea, patience is super key! Thankfully I have him in training, so it helps. Ollie is so smart. But he will choose whether he wants to listen or not. Just one of their many quirks

Thank you for making this. I think you have hit all the negatives very well. I have a doxie, this is my 3rd one. My last one was super stubborn and my new one is a little less stubborn (thank goodness). My last one also had IVDD which was so heart breaking. We dealt with it for 9 years. The worst part was seeing him in pain. Needless to say, with the current one we are taking so many steps to prevent it.

Although I love dachshund they are so much work. My dachshund doesn’t bark to much but it took 9 months to potty train him and even then he still has accidents if we’re not taking him out frequently. The worst thing is that he’s a little destructive he love to dig so we have to supervise him in the yard. But overall their such a loving breed.

I’ve had two, my present Arizona being my second one. Maggie Mae was my first. She was a rescue from people who didn’t want her; three different owners. When I got her I could never figure out why. She was the perfect little girl. She was house trained and always did her business outside quickly if we were traveling. I don’t think she ever had a house accident. She was the most loving little girl, always so well behaved. She was very shy though.
I have read that if the mother is shy, at least one of her puppies will be too. But all the people said she was hyper. If she was, I don’t know where it all went before I got her. She lived to be I think to be, since I’m not sure, almost 15. I had her put down because she developed heart failure and she suffered trying to breathe and she was having a really hard time. I couldn’t handle seeing her suffer like that. It just killed me to lose her. I could only stand the emptiness for 6 months total before I thought I would lose my mind in the quiet of our house.
I got Arizona at 11 weeks. She is now 14 and a half months. She is like night and day from Maggie. She is definitely hyper, but not in a bad way. She is full of energy. Loves to play. Loves everybody and every dog she meets. We haven’t had a close cat encounter yet. Everyone that meets her; it’s love at first sight. They always remember her name. She just fills our house with love. I never want to be without the love of a Dachshund as long as I live.

    First off. Stella is beautiful.
We have had dachshunds in our home for over 25 years.
Our first dachshund was a red smooth coat mini, named Millie. She was only about 8.5 lbs and super small but was the runt of her litter.
She was house broken but I agree it took time and persistence.
She like all dachshunds I know, bark. So a great guard dog. But I will tell you they will take down anything that they feel is harming their human family regardless of size.
Around age 9 yrs. we started having disc disease and ever few months she would wake up and appeared paralyzed, or we would come home and she would be that way.
Scary at first, but once we knew what was going on and what to do, it got to be no big deal. She would need pain med, and a bolus and taper of steroids.
Our vet allowed up to keep these on hand and use in 10:45 her 17th birthday. I feel she would have kept on going but when she was 15yrs old, she was attacked by the black lab who had come into our yard and near my wife. The dog picked her up and just shook her like a rag doll.
When I got her from the dog, she jumped down and ran to my wife scared to death.
We thought she was okay but once the adrenaline wore off, she paled out and and got limp while still being held.
Long story short, emergency vet, heart stopped and they did CPR, but ended up putting her on the breathing machine took to surgery and had massive internal bleeding from the labs teeth. Lost kidney, spleen and had a liver laceration.
Well after a week in the vet ICU and much $$$$. She came home.
She was back to herself within a week and back barking at any and everything.
But that aged her and she started getting gray muzzle and slowed down.
She later developed seizures and we elected to not treat these as they were not a daily issue.
Saying all this b/c these dogs are not frail and have a strong will.
We now have Ruby who is a bigger mini black and tan and cream long coat.
Absolutely the best dog ever re disposition, never meets a stranger and barks when she sees or hears something.
Easily house broken and she is just a lover of her family human and her 4 legged sister as well one of our parrots. Now the other parrot, no way as she saw the bird bite me and my adult daughter, and that created a hate she will not get over.

My dachshund is 11, and yes. They bark. You can’t train that out of them. They’re hound dogs. He loves to dig, and that doesn’t just apply to dirt. He loves digging blanket to make himself a little nest. They hate getting their nails clipped too

    • @maggiesmama757
      @maggiesmama757 Год назад

Mine’s a blanket digger too and nail clipping scares her to death. Her barking was easily and painlessly handled with a spray bottle of water. It only took a couple of tiny sprays too. Now when she barks excessively, we just have to show it to her and she stops.

    • @roxanne2685
      @roxanne2685 Год назад

@@maggiesmama757 Most animal trainers actually recommend not doing that. It's a punishment instead of reinforcement. All it does is teach them not to bark around you, an since barking is their way of communicating so many things it can be a negative. Positive reinforcement with commands is more helpful, and more effective in the long run. Punishments like that run the risk of causing bad behaviors to develop out of fear.

If you’re having trouble house training your puppy and you don’t think anything in your house or your yard will survive; take heart, it gets better as they get a little older. Ours turned a year old in November and she is so much better. She can actually be trusted to be alone while I get a shower. (If everything but her tots are out of her reach).
Just be careful to never leave anything out within their reach that they can swallow. Mine swallowed a cloth stretchy ponytail tie. Luckily she threw it up before it made it to her intestines. They will eat paper, plastic, wood; you name it. It’s like they are part goat. Don’t wonder “will they eat it?” Know they will eat it, so don’t leave ANYTHING out.

Dachshunds sound very much like my female jack russel-
Bark at everything and nothing, stubborn, always wanting attention or playing with, escape artist, difficult to potty train and still has odd accident as an adult, eats anything outside.
She also liked digging as a puppy but we used to stop her immediately, take her away and fill in the holes. So she doesn’t do it much as she has grown older.

I’m late to comment on this video but I just got a sweet little miniature doxie named Millie and I love her to bits (she is almost 3 months old). I am much more patient than my boyfriend is but we have noticed that she will PRETEND to pee (by doing the squat) so that we give her a treat to reward her for “peeing outside” and then when we go inside she pees on the floor.
Obviously we figured it out and are trying to outsmart her but she’s definitely stubborn when it comes to house training her as she hates going out when it’s windy, rainy, or if it’s too cold for her (we even bought her a jacket for the cold). However I still love her 😅❤

I have two mini long haired dachshunds. I love them dearly, but housebreaking was a nightmare! Mine are only 8 weeks apart in age which made it hard, too. My female would get so distracted by things outdoors, she would not go potty. So I tried giving treats and she learned to squat but not necessarily go potty!😂 It has been best to walk them and then they go potty. But at almost 10 yrs old, they will still make a mess in the house occasionally if not walked or they get too distracted outdoors. My male is better, than my female he pretty much knows the command go potty. My female is just so distractable that walking is the only way to consistently get her to potty outside. They are both barkers and I am lucky my neighbors don’t complain. But they are adorable and sweet and I love them so much.

My mini didnt dig up our yard but she did ruin my fairy garden but in her defense I did put it in a place that she would frequently attack because one time she saw a lizard or rodent run into a hole under the house near it she never forgot that spot and would check it everytime I let her out in the backyard. The only complaint I had with her was that she would try to eat anything whether it was food or not. She had to have surgery one time because of something she swallowed. We had to be very careful about things that fell on the floor that would be dangerous to eat. She took very good care of her toys which was funny. She played with them and squeaked them but didnt tear them up or remove the squeakers. She was the smartest dog I ever had when it came to training and doing little tricks but potty training was tough. Unlike my other dog she didnt enjoy going for walks and would often stop in her tracks and not move for a long period of time and wouldnt budge. So I got a stroller and walked her along that and put her in when needed. I could go on and on about this dog because I loved her so much and she just passed away in November 2022.

Yay I’m glad! Thanks for watching :) Stella didn’t start barking until she was about 4-5 months old and hasn’t stopped since hahah. Stella didn’t like her collar for about a week or two, she would try to bite and scratch it off but then she got used to it!

@@HollyObee Thanks for responding! Ok so a couple more months of peace and quiet hahaha. Lola is doing much better with the collar as of today, improving with positive reinforcement. At what age did Stella learn most efficiently?

@Radu Irina. I am in the same exact situation right now.
Picking up mine over the weekend. 💕So I am nervous and excited at the the same time.
How is your doggie doing? Is he potty train? How long did it take?

@@Dulce-cm2kx he is doing great! About potty training it was realy easy for me. I kept the puppy inside for a few weeks until he got all his vaccines and once he went outside he never made inside again (we live in flat btw)

My boyfriend has 2 short haired dachshunds. They piss any and everywhere and dont stop whining or barking. They have the be the most annoying dogs I’ve ever seen in my life. $400 of my clothes they ripped up.. (took them out the laundry basket) They’re really good dogs but he has the WORST ones.

You should make a video with all the flaws because it would live us a real life feel!
I love your videos and you have an Amazing dog but I also notice the amount of work that you put in and I would not be able to put that much work in to owning a dog!!
    And I love dogs 🐶.....

I would never in a million years get a dachshund. Every single one I've met over the age of 5 had back problems or had had extensive operations.

Keep in mind that they were breed to get Baggers to come out of their underground tubes so hunters and/or farmers could then kill the bagger. So if you wonder why they are so aggressive when it comes to the ground, that is why. Look up pictures of baggers and just think of your cute mini having it be their business to fight them. Yikes!

We asked my mother-in-law to look after our mini dachshund for a week. We tried to warn her of some of Lilly’s tricks and idiosyncrasies. She wouldn’t have it, told us she was a darling little angel who could no wrong. She was the happiest dog we’ve ever owned. In the 15 1/2 years we had her her tail never stopped wagging. We arrived home a week later, walked through the front door, first words we heard were she is an absolute rat bag. Despite the warnings, she got hold of a pack of 6 toilet rolls and decided to redecorate the bathroom, hall and a couple of bedrooms. MIL got her clothes ready, went into the shower, came out to find Lilly had some new chew toys and ran off down the hallway with a blouse in her mouth, tail going at a hundred miles an hour. Numerous other stunts and mischief. What can I say, we tried to tell her. There’s an old saying, silence is golden…..unless you own a dachshund 😊

I had a cat before we got our doxie. The cat is very friendly and tolerant of the dog, but the dog has a strong prey drive. She is just relentless to provoke the cat into running so she can chase her. And she barks at her. I did not know this before getting the dog.

My Chorizo is a Lil Asshole. I guess he shares my personality he pisses me off and is stubborn but he’s very good looking with a cute way about everything he does so I really can’t complain.
