As a loner who has absolutly no contact with his family AT ALL residing in a state totally different from them on his own, I claim this as my anthem. Thank you Thundercat for making this song for people like me
Talk to your family. It'll eat away at you. I have been on that path before. I'm still 1000 miles away but family is your heart. I hope this reaches you.
my family just died, my emperor was slain and i have been set up. with samurai chasing me, i get my son and walk across the country fighting for the weak. this song is perfect.
Yep Oogami Itto gets framed for murdering his Daimyo (landlord), his successor and loyal guard chase Itto out of the area, then kill his wife and immediate family. Itto flees with his son and decides either to kill his son or spare him by choosing a sword or ball (his son is a crawling toddler). The son reaches for the sword, so he decides to take up with him to avenge his honor and kill the perpetrator who executed his wife and framed him and carries his son in a modified war machine baby carriage (complete with Gatling guns and makeshift naginata amongst other weapons).
Of course it is, very subtle pattern. But I think the contrast between the melody and the other instruments make them more aggressive. It kind of reminds me of Camel by flying lotus
Thundercat gets mad respect for what this track is referencing - one of the most O.G. Samurai stories of all time. We Americans would know it as "Shogun Assassin", perhaps through the sound bytes GZA samples throughout Liquid Swords, or maybe through the reference that appears in Kill Bill Vol. 2. Anyhow - this song captures the vibe of the story pretty perfectly. Would recommend watching either Shogun Assassin, the dubbed US version, or reading the original manga that came out in the 70's
I covered this on an IG story, a friend of mine loved it so much and then he passed the same weekend. Now this is his song in a way. Rest in Peace Brother
The snare on this alone is compelling. How Thundercat plays with such feeling, and those gorgeous long notes, before he just tears into the song whilst keeping it in the pocket as Herbie Hancock just shines over it all. I love this song.
Legendary. The ending mentally puts me in a throwback black Camaro, driving on a highway in AZ or NV with a Spanish guitar in the back. I played this song religiously when it came out.
Its exactly that! Japanese Manga turned film about a dishonored samurai Itto ogami and his 5y/o child. The Landlord Kills his wife and servants out of his perceived notion of Ogami's desertion and Ogami is forced to be on the run with his newborn child throughout the countryside. The Highlights are the baby carriage he pushes around which is almost completely weaponised with knives, bamboo Naginata, rope snares, bullets and I think a flamethrower!
I think I've played this song two or three times in a row and I still haven't gotten tired of it. It's got a one of those kick/snare combos that makes it hard to stop listening... I'm gonna be stuck on this one for a while.
I know I'm 4 years too late, but hello fellow The Residents/thundercat fan! I think we might be a small demographic but it's good to know I'm not alone.
@@rainred2540 my spotify rewind for 2020 put me in the top .0005% of Thundercat listeners and i was like 🙃 I gotta chill, but what better to chill to than some Thundercat🤔. Fuckin dilemma.
This beautiful song, when it transitions sounds like a interlude from Jaco Pastorius. I love!!!!! Thundercat. My first time listening to this artist. He was sent from Heaven. So artistic, intelligent, and unique. He is planning to tour in 2020. Will try my best to attend. I wish he would do a music project with Joni Mitchell.
I saw him at the festival hall UK last summer. The age variety of the audience was amazing. I think it is possibly George Duke and Thunder cat...come back GD you are truly missed

Anybody else listen to this and think of literal lone wolf mothers and their cubs fighting for survival in the wilderness? The lyrics and music fit that situation perfectly.
Evan Wills I feel on that sentiment but it is technically still called a Bass......guitar. But be that as it may Basses and Guitars are VERY different.

I've had this cd for years. So long ago that I have the cd. Not some downloads. Still for I skipped this track. MISTAKE. Love the groove and the feel. Two huge thumbs up.
This song reminds me of being on my own as a young child without any Guidance Real Talk and now that I am Older God and Jesus been showing me the way Amen.
i randomly came searching for videos related to the legendary manga and left pleasantly surprised now im reading the manga that inspired the song while blasting the song ... thx Thundercat!

I hope that you are doing well. I'm a person that may need to cut family off completely. But again, I'm hoping you are well
you should read Lonewolf and Cub, the manga.

That bass, snare, and kick combo is no joke...
monsieur deejay Yeah for real. When the drums came in... ooooooo. So nice.
+monsieur deejay I love this song, but you do realize that that is an incredibly simplistic drum beat, yes?
Of course it is, very subtle pattern. But I think the contrast between the melody and the other instruments make them more aggressive. It kind of reminds me of Camel by flying lotus

got that 90s timbaland feat playa vibe
Herbie Hancock plays keys on this in case anyone didnt know, also if you dont know who he is then you're in for a treat.
Did NOT know: thank you, for the cool-ass factoid...
Just had a jazzgasm... like... sooo hard. Jizz all over the place, jazz all over my head.
Herbie Hancock also signed the declaration of independence.
Uh huh that's so true.
Also, did you ever hear of ELECTRICITY?
That's right.
God bless Herbie!
Me and my friends were walking through the woods tripping when we heard 'rockit' for the first time.

Mind bending how the sparse lyrics give you the entirety of the story. Powerful poetry. Deceptively simple. And then there's the music...
these chord scales expand the mind.. im no music theory guy just speaking from
spirit.
Lone wolf and cub
Where will you go?
What will you do
All on your own?
Put up a fight
Heal from your wounds
