The advice the father gave son at the end sums up the kind of man he is. Selfish til the end.

there's a fine line between loving your kids and giving them free handouts.
This story owner says he buys businesses for his kids (car repair shop, etc). That's giving them a handout in a way. I hope his kids don't take him for granted and use him as their safety net all the time.
that's one of the hardest part about parenting: you want to love and support but you don't want to become a safety net for your kids either because they will think they can always run to you for money.
either way, I'm proud of the story owner for NOT repeating his traumatic childhood cycle and doing better for himself and his kids! Too many hmong people have trauma in their lives and instead of doing better, they repeat the cycle for their kids 😭

It’s okay to be a little selfish. Before you can love the outsiders you must love yourself first and then your immediate family, second. Others come after. Do what makes you happy with no regrets. 🎉

You should've told your dad don't be mad or sad if i don't love you in return. I just want you feel my pain but don't be mad or sad at me. I just doing the same things you did to me, i can't help you because my wife say no!😉

I’m so sorry you had to endure that stepmother’s hateful wrath. Just wished your father had more backbone to stand up for you guys but he’s the one wearing the dress. It’s ok though they’re there to teach you how to be independent and thrive on your own. When they’ve treated you wrong you don’t need to pay any attention to them anymore. Don’t lend them any money or help at all! Your father is to blame for everything. He should’ve loved you and protect you. Not all stepmoms are bad. It’s the personality that matters. I’m glad you’ve learned to be independent.

I stopped feeling too sorry for orphans. If you love them too much many are ungrateful, and if you discipline it means you don't love them. If you don't discipline it means you don't love them. No matter what you do its because you dont love them. Many orphans in the US are ungrateful. Just be glad you turned it to make your life better. I bet you can't love an orphan either. Saying this because I've seen too many cases of ungrateful orphans in US.

@pajdawblis4291 I know many orphans in my husband's side of family and they orphans who are ungrateful. No matter what you do, you are the bad one. You don't discipline they say it's because you don't love them, you discipline they say it's because you don't love them. You can't win with orphans here in the US.

Your father did not protect you and your sister, instead he went along with your evil step-mother to add more grief to your lives. No excuse for that kind of behavior from a father! He clearly showed where his loyalty is; his other children and his current wife.
I’m very proud of you for your success. Love those who love you and those who stood by your side through thick and thin. People who only love you when you are successful are not worthy of your love.

This story is common within the blended family. It’s life, as harsh as it may sound, but it is. Sometimes they have real parents and they don’t get the love that they should be receiving from their parents. There are stories like that too, so if you were to think about it, what’s worse? Your real parents who doesn’t love you or your step parents. We get dealt with cards that’s not in our favor and it’s up to us to make something out of it. In this case, you were smart, and you did was right for you and it worked out in the end, you have a blessed and grateful life and I’m happy for you.

Some of us are lazy and we live paycheck to paycheck okay? In some cases rich parent spoils their kids and the kids turn up into trouble kids but in some cases parent are careless and poor thus the kids struggles and they learn to be good kids and hard working kids. I don't think "money" matters it's the mind over body that matters.

Very inspiring story brother! My mother in-law and father in-law never help my husband and I while I was in school and working and my husband was also working . We paid extended family members to watch our children because my in-laws were too busy helping my husband’s younger brother’s family. Now that my in-laws are old my husband’s brother and wife want nothing to do with them. The saddest part is that my children and I have to care for them now. I convince myself to do things and care for them because I understand how much it hurts when they did it to me. Sometimes I cry silently to myself when I think about those cold raining nights where we have to pick up the kids at 1 or 2 am from our cousins house or meeting at grocery parking lots to switch our kids.

They should make their living by themselves you should have told your dad how it is. I hate this Hmong mentality, they don’t even know how you when you are so down but when you have a good life they always claim that they really you and claim that without them you are probably dead by now hopefully when all old g are dead and gone all this mentality’s will stop. You should just forget about them or else they mass up your life

Unfortunately, this experience is common in the Hmong community especially when it comes to step parents. Be grateful that you learned this experience early on to help you prepare and face the true reality when you are older. At the end of the day, don't feel bad or regret any decisions you've made or didn't make. It's all about priorities and as long as you get them right, that's all that matters. Do what's best for you and your family. Regarding your step siblings, their parents are their first teacher. If they didn't learn anything from them, I don't think you could make any difference or impact.

Being a step parent/children is hard. Even being a biological parent is hard, but because it's your biological parent/children you just seem to be able to forgive and forget. But when a "step" comes in, we just can't forgive and forget at all. I guess it's life. Regardless, just do good because whatever you do, it will come back in return later in life.

I find it very saddening that your father even admitted to not loving you. He did everything for the sake of his new wife and shoved you and your silbing to the side and turned a blind eye. Your father is a cruel selfish man. Now, that he is old and have no successful son. He wants to deceive you into thinking what he did was okay. It is not. If you and your silbing was not minors, i agreed but you two were minors! Love your dad but if you don't fully love him, that's okay too since it was okay for him not to love you.
