It is always fun to see Yamaha analog synths but then it becomes trippy to see this little thing produce these sounds

This is the synth that taught me what waveforms looked and sounded like and why PWM sounded like that - I went on to copy it on the ZX Spectrum, writing a little PWM sound routine with portamento, which I used for a tune I wrote for my brother's first game (Star Firebirds). I only wish I'd figured out it could be modified - that weak resonance filter was the most annoying thing about it!

      @BOOelectric  Год назад +2

That's AMAZING!! I remember Star Firebirds very well, and the sound really stood out! Clangerous noises always appealed to me, and adding bird calls is always a bonus! Very happy to read your message! I managed to make a finger drum program on the Spectrum with poke commands for various (deliciously crunchy) white noise bursts, but PWM?!? Portamento!?! That's some next level sh*t!! Thank you so much for saying hi!

Fantastic bit of kit and a fantastic demo to go with it. Your high resonance adaptation is breathtaking. 🏆 That is easily the best sounding CS01 I've ever laid ears on.

I found a black CS-01 on marketplace for a good price, apparently from research it's the Yamaha CS-01 II model.
I'm wondering if you know if this modification you've done would be possible with the one I'm getting?
    Cheers!

Hiya! To the best of my knowledge the mkII has a fully resonant 24dB filter, so while you might be able to do a similar mod, it might not work in the same way, and as the mod was intended to add resonance, there's no need as it already has full resonance. Good find though. I always wanted one!

Oh, the innocent fumblings of youth... getting the screwdriver out because you heard, or read it in "One Two Testing", that there was a control inside that unleashed some hidden goodness. I distinctly remember an article (~1982??) where the band Shriekback's attitude to Roland's "no user serviceable parts inside" warning plate was "fuck that!". Shriekback knew what they were doing of course, whereas I, being 14 and having no idea at all - did not! You were lucky/more skilled than me! I only ever managed to break, or change it for the worse. :)
    Love your videos!

I was definitely more lucky than skilled with this one, but there is a trail of dead casiotones in my wake. They were good times though: no gear fetishization, no respect for warning labels, just the desire to make awesome noises, a screwdriver and a soldering iron.

Cool circuit bending! Nice result. How much did you pay when you bought it in the 80's?

I got it from Freedman's on Leytonstone High Road... And it was cheaper than it should have been... If I remember rightly it was £125...

Bought one myself from the "Freemans" catalogue (only way I was going to get one!) added to my 2nd hand Jen SX1000, then later on a Casio CZ1000 and a couple of modules. It all went a bit pete tong when the guy who owned the mixing desk I had borrowed (so I could pretend I was Jarre) wanted it back. Few years later got an Atari ST and entered the world of MIDI and then took a headstagger and sold everything. Currently playing with VST stuff and was pleasantly surprised by the BA1 audio version of the CS01 as to my tired ears it sounded just as good (if not better)
It's true what what they say... Parents, introduce your kids to synths or cameras - they will never have enough money for drugs 🤣

Haha! That's such a good bit of parental advice, I wish I'd thought of it when I was 12! I had a free vst years ago called the Hahaha cs01, and I seem to remember it wasn't bad. If the ba01 is invoking the memories you say it is, then it must be doing its job well.

I’ve always wanted one but ones I’ve found are either in really bad condition or they want stupid prices for it.
One day I will get one I’ve made it my life goal now I’m in my 50s but it shall be mine 😅

These can be MIDIed if you grab the UMR2 MIDI board - which scans the keyboard. I have my MKII version MIDIed...
The MKII version seems to be quite rare. It gives you the advantage of having a dedicated resonance slider and of course the 24dB filter. I love mine and use it often for all sorts of stuff!
