2024 is the Year of the Dragon, so I got to asking myself. Who are the weakest Pokémon from each of the nine generations? In doing so, I also ranked each Dragon Pokémon from each generation as well, basing these off of their base stats as well as do a little discussion about their designs.

Music from each mainline Pokémon game, plus 'Rock the Dragon' Sega Genesis mix
Before people start commenting about the Zygarde forms being from Gen 7, just remember that they had no reason to be introduced in Sun and Moon except for the cancellation of Pokémon Z.
There were actually 2 slots for another Kalos game found in the data of either Pokémon Bank or Pokémon Home.
Very true. Also not grouping those in Gen 7 would’ve made no difference for the video topic anyway
The real question we should be asking is this: Why was it canceled in the first place? Kalos definitely had its problems but it’s definitely nothing a 3rd game couldn’t fix so it would’ve made perfect sense.
@@Mobtrapper-hq8isGame Freak had an initiative at the time to make a bunch of smaller-scale original IPs to lessen their dependence on Pokémon. With one team working on ORAS, another team starting early work on Sun & Moon, and the rest of the employees working on the original IPs, the entire company was spread too thin and Pokémon Z had to be cancelled.
This is why there was no mainline Pokémon release in 2015 and some of the stuff they had planned for Z got carried over to SM. The worst part is that the original IPs they sacrificed Z in order to make ended up all being relatively unsuccessful, selling in low quantities and making little impact on the company as a whole.
@melvint-p9500 it wasn’t just a rumor, there’s actually a lot pointing to their being a cancelled Pokémon Z. For one, the code for Pokémon Home and X and Y seems to include data for two games that went unused, this code would’ve been used for trading, and the fact that there’s two entries means that Gamefreak was going to make a Pokémon XZ and YZ, similar to how they made Black 2 and White 2. Also, the season of the Pokémon anime in 2015, the year a 3rd version of the Gen 6 games would’ve come out, was literally called “Pokémon XYZ,” and the anime always hypes up the latest game, but there was no game for 2015 which itself is kinda weird.
Dratini being found in water areas may be a reference to how east asian dragons were closely associated with water rather than fire, due to legends often having them residing in rivers and lakes and being able to produce water beams like how european dragons breathe fire.
Yeah I love the lore with it. I just think it’s funny that everything about Dratini has to do with water and it’s not a water type
Nevermind the fact the entire Dratini line could learn Flamethrower (Iris’s Dragonite had that as a move for a while), and Dragon Breath is an egg move too.
Not that I’m complaining.
Applin and it's entire evolution line are one of my favorite designs in the whole game, it's adorable and it's cruddy move pool can do nothing to stop that :P
Appleton is legit one of my fav mons, i use it in showdown all the time (even tho its TRASH)
@@andrewmurphy5532we stan a king
Taste 👌👌👌
But there are just so many apple possibilities too
appleton was mvp of my mono dragon gen 8 run
I appreciate that they seem to slowly be making more dragons that aren't legendaries, pseudolegendaries, or mega evolutions. Though like 2/3 of them still fall into at least one of those categories, which is honestly pretty impressive.
I honestly like the non-pseudo or legendary dragons best, my favorites being Flygon and Dragalge
I like the dragons that stray off the path a bit
We need more “regular” dragons outside of pseudos and legendaries. But then the rare times they create them (Drampa, Applin, etc.) the fandom pays them dust because they’re almost always outclassed by the omnipresent pseudo of the region.
They should make an effort to create non-dragon pseudos instead. Havent got those since gen 3.
The need to make more non dragon psuedo legendaries
So fun note about the similarities with gen 3 to gen 1 Pokémon wise: they originally were going to give gen 3 the gen 5 treatment, which is why in the early game there are almost no old Pokémon.
THAT'S probably why I enjoyed Gen 3 so much as a kid! I never even realized that until now! It was just brand new pokemon after brand new pokemon! Like a dopamine rush! Might even explain my dopamine addiction now >.> 😅
Gen 3 always felt like an alternate universe to Gen 1. Not really in a bad way either
Which is crazy because they started incorporating Gen 3 in the Alternate Universe theory in Gen 6 with its remakes!! @@Paraspectre
Huh, I guess that would explain why I never thought of that as odd. Gen 5 (and later gen 3) were my main Pokemon experiences, until Gen 9
Love that Kingdra is the defacto both weakest and strongest dragon of gen 2. Also, I always thought that fin on its face was a tongue....
The lone Kingdra island. Same for ghosts with Misdreavus too
Same for Misdreaveus in gen 2 and ghost
Sure would be a shame for them if game freak handed out Ice Beam TM compatibility like it was candy...!
HERE THERE BE DRAGONS. They will ice your candles and burn your cheese!
Applin's mechanically weakness is made up for by being adorable
It’s certainly not my least favorite dragon
I mean, I knew Noibat/Noivern is no Dragonite or Garchomp, but I wouldn't have guessed it started on Zubat-level
I've always loved how Dragonite looks powerful but still friendly. Too many dragons either look too intentionally strong (looking at you, Haxorus) or just plain weird (Applin and Goomy lines). Also Druddigon straight up looks like a Digimon. But to each their own 🙄
Druddigon always looked very off to me with the contrasting colors. It’s like they had design ideas that got shuffled together and went with the result
Same here. Dragonite also has intelligence “on par with humans,” so I’d imagine it’d be good at tactics and other technical smarts on top of its sheer power.
Honestly I’m happy terastal exists so I can finally let reshiram shoot lightning and zekrom shoot fire just like the blue eyes white dragon and red eyes black dragon
21:31
I do like the pun. Wyrms acting like worms.
22:13
I see why it hides, can't fight back against most birds even when it tries. Suprised it didn't get access to the Protect TM.
Seems like some of the Gen 9 stat blocks didn't replaced correctly.
Koridons stat block remains at 23:03, Baxscalibers replacing Raging Bolts at 23:06, and Cyclizards replaces Driplins at 23:15.
I was 100% expecing goomy since its pokedex entry calls it the weakest dragon type pokemon
"The weakest Dragon-type Pokémon, it lives in damp, shady places, so its body doesn't dry out" - pokemon X and Omega ruby
I would love to see this kind of list for every other type, especially Fairy, Ghost, Dark, Psychic, and Ice.
Happy Year of the Dragon. Happy Chinese Lunar New Year.
I almost did this idea with ghosts for Halloween. Maybe in 2024
The "safari zone" is more like a licensed hunting area that has been artificially populated for tourism.
Its like a zoo where you can keep as many crocodiles as you can catch in half an hour. And as an Australian, you take home zero crocodiles no matter how many you subdue. It will recover eventually.
Honestly, the only reason I disagree with your choice in Noibat for Generation 6, is simply because Goomy’s Pokédex states:
*The weakest Dragon-type Pokémon, it lives in damp, shady places, so its body doesn't dry out.*
I guess it directly stating it as the weakest is just enough for me, even more than Applin. I still liked the list though!!
Are we just gonna ignore the fact that this man has a level 91 DELELELELEWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP???
My favourite is dragalge because I remember finding it before my friends did in high school and moping the floor because they didn't know where skrelp was even after I told them
"Deino at 300"
Screenshot says 320.
It might be weak but Goomy from Gen 6 is still one of the greatest designs of any Pokémon, ever. Praise be to Goomy!
Ironic that goomy is the considered weakest in Lore, but noibat is clearly weaker
Goomy is awesome
it's a four way tie for stat totals of 300 Deino has a stat total of 320 so should be tied with frigibax for second strongest.
"Dragon, Dragon... Um... H-head chala!"
Honestly applin is so cute though. And all of its evolved forms are perfect. It's my favorite dragon type. Especially appletun. Its a thick Boi.
Maybe the weakest dragons in each gen were the friends we made along the way... (possesses a Calm nature Dragonite)
That’s beautiful 🥹
More and more content please. Idk why but your voice is perfect for retro pokemon topics lol
Haha well thank you. I get sick of hearing it so I’m glad some people like it
Applin gets Grassy Glide and Draco Meteor via move tutor
Yeah I thought I mentioned move tutor and breeding? Maybe not. Also, its different in Gen 9 too
@@ParaspectreOh, you did say not including breeding or tutoring, my bad. Although, I can see excluding breeding because it's a pain in the ass and the moves aren't that good, but it seems arbitrary to exclude move tutor moves when evaluating Applin since you can just take your Applin to the move tutor if you want.
We think the reason why so many Pokémon in Gen 3 are similar to gen 1 was because the dev wanted to cut gen 1 Pokémon from the game until late into development, and many of the Gen 3 Pokémon were made as replacement for the gen 1 Pokémon, hence why so few appear, and why the remake of Gen 1 exist.
26:31 die-a-beat-us
Noivern is probably one of my favorite Dragon-types, followed by Baxcalibur (for the Godzilla reference) and Hydrapple (The design is just so cute and clever imo). I like how varied Dragon-type Pokemon can be and really the only one that makes me scratch my head is Alolan Exeggutor. I guess it's a riff on 'dragonfruit', but it's just a palm tree with a tail to me.
You stating the best by bst is a good detail because sometimes yea the competitive viability aint from the highest bst mons
BST was the simplest thing to compare here. There are certainly other factors though
@@Paraspectre yea like abilities, stat spreads, typing etc etc
Honestly, Hydreigon is the most clever name in the whole franchise to this day imo.
I mean if we are being honest here Dragon as a Typing is Honestly pretty Mid Tier, since it's doesn't really hit anything Super Effectively, but has Good Defenses overall, and Hit a lot of Types for Natural Dmg. It's cause a lot of Dragon Types happen to have Really Good Stats with them being either a Legendary, Megas, or Pseudo-Legendary, or other Strong Classes of Pokemon like the Ultra Beast, or Paradox Pokemon, and I feel like those were the Titans that the Devs had in mind when they were making the Fairy Type. And a lot of Dragon Types from what I can remember have Good Coverage so I think it's cause of those factors a lot of people believe that Dragon is a lot better then it really is, not saying that the Type is bad, but I wouldn't say overpower.
Agreed. I always felt like for this exact reason fairy should've resisted dragon but not been immune and instead been immune to dark
@@linklinksson6885 I agree with you on that. It would have made more sense, but I this understand the reasons why that made the Fairy Type Immune to Dragon even though I don't think it makes a lot of sense thematically.
Didn't we just have a year of the Dragon like 12 years ago?
Yes, that's how the Chinese zodiac works
Feels like just yesterday…yesterday…yester……
In Hearthstone it was 4 years ago 😅
I know you said you would talk about snake Pokémon next year, but I think it would be funny if you did a ranking of the strongest Bug types as a bit a contrast to this video.
I mean there are some pretty sweet bug types
Funny, this video came up while I was relaxing with my Tyrunt plushie.
I really want just regular dragons. No more pseudo Legendary Dragons with 600 BST. Give us some more 500-580 BST dragons. And give us a Poison Type with 600 BST. Anything but Dragon, PLEASE
I agree, we could use some more variety from copying the stat table of the generation before
@Paraspectre it's come to the point where when I see the pseudo and its a dragon, it's a funny shiny toy for 5 minutes, then becomes forgettable. Where are more of the Tyranitars and Metagross? It's been 6 generations. Heck, if we get another Legends type game, and it's based on Paradoxes, I'm hoping there's a Hudreigon regional form that is like Fairy/Poison type. It's dex entry goes on about it not always being a destructive monster. So it could've been this cute fairy that minds it's own business and spits poison at you if it feels threatened like many other animals IRL, but is a really sweet partner to any trainer it trusts. It's pokedex entry just screams "I used to have a different form and I evolved into this". Like a past paradox or ice age animal.
One fun thing about Gen VI: Goomy is stated by X's Pokédex as "the weakest Dragon-type Pokémon", yet its BST is higher than Noibat's.
It seems to be based on JRPG slimes (particularly from Dragon Quest) that r supposed to be 1 of the most puny enemy u face in the game. Another 'dex entry mentions that it'll die if it dries out, so it's the weakest in canon due to its origins of being a snail & JRPG slime. While Noibat can fly & Applin can hide inside its apple shell to protect itself from a danger.
Yeah that is pretty funny. It’s the weakest lore-wise but not statistically
I kinda want to see the weakest BUG type of every generation, I feel like that’s a big competition
Definitely
You should do this again, but instead it's finding the strongest Bug type, since Bugs are seen as a pretty weak type
Gible is my all-time favorite pokemon, followed by Deino. There's something charming about them. They're just silly little guys.
Magikarp is my favorite dragon type Pokemon. Splash is a super effective move after all.
HEY WAIT
They need to change the Pseudo legendary typing, to something else next generation. Tyranitar is the only one thats different!
i will save up money for months, years if needed, and I will buy immediately the next console, deal with whatever subscription cost or bug patches are involved with me playing the very next, brand new,
2D pokémon game.
and I'd do a lot more if they got the creator of pokemon as one of the creators of pokemon again
You forgot mega-garchomp.
Megas weren't counted likely because they weren't proper pokemon and only nonpermenant forms
I did? I meant to at least mention it. It’s obviously not going to be in the running though
Dratini is my OG favorite. Not just my favorite dragon, but my favorite Pokémon overall and nothing has yet to dethrone it. Outside of a regional variant, I'm not sure anything ever will.
Personally I like Dragonair more but I can see why, Dratini is cuter and simpler yet it's still obvious that it's a sea serpent
@@theknightwithabadpictotall7639: Don't get me wrong, Dragonair is awesomely majestic. If Pokémon worked like Digimon and Dratini could be my rookie travel partner and Dragonair be its champion battle form, I would totally be down for that.
Its shiny is pink:3 girliepop dragon is my favorite
I gotta say, I’ve never heard Dratini be someone’s favorite. Very cool to hear it though
Holy crud, another Dratini lover! Finally!
I love Dratini so much I've trained two up to level 100 and hyper trained both of them.
Hope this won't Drag-on! *laugh track*
I think Dratini is pretty weak competitively.
Nicely done. Nice.

ACTUALLY, Applin in traditional Japanese was a peach cobbler, not an apple pie dragon. This is because, in traditional Japan, dragons are said to have peaches for eyes that they gift to school children who have "evolved" past elementary school. Your channel would benefit from additional research.
I think this would be a really interesting topic if it wasn't just about base stat totals
It seemed like the easiest way to compare. Aside from Applin, they all generally have pretty strong moves, so comparing those started to feel like a wash. Base stats were a definitive comparison
Love this one. I have a tattoo of Dragonair 💙
23:05 i think you kept koridons stats instead of showing archaludons
The weakest dragon types are always the unevolved ones. There is NO fully evolved dragon type that is weak.
And yet another treat :) thank you so much
Thanks for checking it out!
Applin may be the weakest dragon in terms of battle, but it's certainly not the weakest in terms of design concept.
Now THAT…I can get behind.
Wasn’t there a cell zygarde
Your videos are fun, but I couldn't shake this idea, the "weakest" will automatically mean the base versions so you could have chopped so much time off this video ignoring anything past a basic dragon because like what happened non of them were even close. I get you need some time on a video for it to be worth watching idk, but cut all that imo useless time off and then do a "top" list of the evolutions, and then a top list like you did of your favorite designs - probably some redundency there too but still more interesting that listing the evolution dragons just to say "they obviously don't come close".
Fair, but the point of the video wasn’t really to be a surprise. You can guess who the weakest ones are before I even bring them up. I just wanted to look at their designs and do a comparison of those between gens since dragon is so much associated with strong Pokémon
Find it funny goomy is called the weakest dragon according to the pokedex yet noibat & applin are weaker? 😂
I honestly didn’t know it said that about Goomy. That’s pretty funny
DRAGON DRAGON ROCK THE DRAGON DRAGON BALL Z AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
It had to be that. It had to be.
@@Paraspectre ARE YOU CHALLENGING ME VEGETA
My man paraspectre back at it again. Great vid man
Thank you!
3:27 I never knew dratini costed a different amount depending on the version
Only because Blue was the third, updated version in Japan and they just kept some differences. That's why Blue has a new intro.
I like the subtle game corner differences
Really should have kept things to fully evolved dragons...
Cause the list is basically just nothing but the first stage of the pssudos for each generation.
But then it wouldn’t be about the weakest dragons, which was the whole point of the video. I wanted to examine the weakest ones because dragon is so much associated with power. Comparing the fully evolved ones would be the same thing, but shifted by comparing a ton with base 600
Dratini may be weak but it’s easily the cutest dragon. It’s one of the cutest Pokémon of all time. It’s always been one of my favorites. Also why is dragon weak to ice? I get that it needs a weakness to not be too OP but why ice? I’ve always suspected that gyrados was at some point to be the final evolution to the dratini line because it looks more like dragonair than dragonite does. I think dragonite completes the line better than gyrados and I also feel like getting a gyrados at level 55 is way less rewarding than a dragonite. I’m surprised to see that haxorus is 60 stat points weaker than hydreigon. I always considered haxorus a very strong Pokémon. Also makes me sad flygon is 80 points weaker than salamence. I like flygon more than salamence. I also didn’t understand how dialga and palkia are considered dragons. They don’t really look like dragons. Same with zekrom but I can see reshiram being a dragon. Never mind the ultra beasts being dragons. That’s ridiculous. Man, kaiba would be happy if he was in the Pokémon world because there are lots of cool dragons. He would definitely have a garchomp for sure.
to be fair, gen 2 had only 1 dragon type
Why is shelgon a dragon type?
Gen 1 was so poorly balanced. 1 dragon line, 1 ghost line and it wasn't even proper ghost. 150 available pokemon (151, Mew, was basically unavailable) spread over 15 types (dual typing possible) yet 33 were poison, 32 were water 24 were normal meanwhile 3 dragons, 3 ghosts, 5 ice. The type balancing was way off, that 20% poison made already powerful Psychics even more useful and rendered Venusaur, itself poison, the most viable starter. Almost ¼ of all gen 1 mons have at least got a weakness to grass while about ⅛ can offer real resistance. No joke, abra and bulbasaur are the cornerstone of a strong gen 1 run.
OK now we’re going to go downstairs The quality of the rest
It's not Goomy? I thought it's Dex entry said it was the weakest dragon type
Dieno is also 320 not 300 like you said, doesn't really matter though cause the dark typing is awful etc.
You made the noodle sad :(
Like the video but tyrantrum should of been mentionied from 0:01-27:48

@paraspectre will you include in your tcg series also japanese exclusives like the fan club oromo cards or web series VS japanese set and such?
Yeah I may go back and do those secondary videos
I don’t care if goodra is weak. He’s cute.
I hate to nitpick, but technically complete and 10% zygarde are gen7 not gen 6
Either way, Zygarde was nowhere close to being in the running
Kinda surprised that Goomy wasn't weakest pretty sure it's dex entry says it is the weakest dragon. Oops.

everyone knows that the true answer is goomy right?
…..right?
It is what the pokedex says 🤷🏻♂️

I did not.
Goomy. Its stated in the pokedex.
Yeah, it’s weird that they lied to us, isn’t it?

clearly its actually all of them, UvU
Bulbapedia's really not great for design and name bases. It's almost entirely speculation.
Do you think?
Because we literally don't know for 99% of Pokémon
Yep. I'm saying that it shouldn't be presented in that instance as true; there shoulda been a lot more 'could be's in my opinion.
Yeah that’s why I always give the disclaimer. None of this is based in fact and I don’t want to pretend like I came up with all of this. They’re just fun speculations

I had applin on my first Sword team. I like my little flapple. I also used one for the Scarlet dlc, although I guess that was dipplin in Teal Mask and then kinda hydrapple in Indigo Disk. Speaking of dlcs, I fell in love with my druddigon from the Isle of Armor!
I quite like the different apple designs that they made
I'm so happy that Dragon was knocked off of its stuck-up pedestal starting with Fairy's introduction and achieved the freedom to be weird and fun. No longer just some rare Type often reserved for Pseudo-Legends, now you can get a draconic wyrm in an apple with only one Badge! A tiny lil' fruit bat with speaker ears! An actual sea dragon masquerading as dead kelp! It's so much better now!
Flygon was always cool though.
Yeah I love some dragons but it’s always been a lower end type for me
@@Paraspectre Same, I actually flat-out disliked them pre-Fairy. Hated that they could get away with punching holes in everything without consequence. Didn’t help that most of the designs were too stereotypically “hardcore” for me personally.
Since Fairy set it straight I’ve actually held some decent respect for the Type, only increasing as Pokémon’s metric for what a “Dragon” is gets weirder and weirder. Hydrapple is a wonderful example. But yeah it’s probably still in my bottom 4 Types on my personal tier list, only above Rock, Fighting, and Normal.
Based
I will dislike this video just bcz
"I'll judge only by BST alone"
So a f-king Bagon is better than Trapinch and swablu due to BST alone but Bagon is a hell to evolve main-game since it is a very endgame and his move pool is bad until as a Salamence... But trapinch and swablu are early mons that you can work with very versatile, maybe even carrying the hole team if you know what you doing. But no... Bad video is bad
Except Swablu and Trapinch aren’t dragons 🤷🏻♂️. Gen 3 is a bad example to use because Bagon is no doubt the weakest dragon there. I could see an argument for future generations with more weak ones to compare.
Damn this has to be the most boring video I've ever listened to 😅. At least you're transparent about just using Bulbapedia for everything. But it's missing a lot. But hey, at least you're getting views
