Considering Lydia’s attitude, this was clearly a case of actions speaking louder than words. It doesn’t sound like she would have believed her parents had they had given her the full story in their warning. Besides, her mother did say that the hardest lessons are always the best ones. She knew what she had in hand.

"What kind of a father just leaves his daughter out in the cold like this?" A SMART FATHER!!!!! My Dad was never wealthy financially speaking. But he's been around this planet longer than I have so he used his wealth of knowledge and instilled in me something called COMMON SENSE. I was still a senior in High School when I started my very first job. It was not anything fancy just slinging pizzas for dominos I was 18 still living at home but helping my dad out by paying half of my check for the bills my brother did the same. We were taught some self reliant skills ❤❤ love my father and would not change anything bout it

She had no consideration for them just expecting them to give her thousands of dollars at a time, and being a spoiled brat about it, she’s calling her step-father name and having a fit when he didn’t transfer money fast enough. He kept warning her to not spend the money so fast, then she went through $5000 before the month was up. As a college student I had to earn my own spending money, most of which did go to eating out and video games. Thankfully at the time it was pretty easy to get on-campus jobs, and also at the time the $250-300 per month I got in my paycheck was more than enough. You could get a full burger, fries, and shake meal for $5, or a large pizza for $10, and video games cost a single quarter. Didn't really do clubs, didn't need to when there was a private party somewhere every weekend and a few bucks chipped in for a keg was all I needed to give if I was in the mood for that.

@JoJo Granum yeah, I had a meal card too, and most of my meals were definitely eaten at the commons. In fact, that was the job I worked for months, serving food and cleaning up, and there was always a party with my co-workers on the eve of payday. But of course as a college student who did a LOT of walking and biking around campus, I often got the late night munchies and had to go into the adjoining town to buy that burger, pizza, or burrito I craved. The pizza was definitely my favorite though. And believe it or not, the pizza place is still there three decades later...the only spot still left in standing from my student days. Every other eatery i knew at the time closed or changed names or owners.

Other practical options: Get a bike (a good one costs $200), ride the bus, get a gas-powered scooter ($1,500 plus monthly insurance). For eating, get some canned goods, lunch meat, chips, bread, beverages like soda and juice, milk and breakfast cereal. Buy some basic cookwear, silverware, plates and bowels (about $100 and reusable). After the first week, if you work it right it should be possible to spend about $100 a week on groceries.

Plus, how can she take so much time away from her classes? I think the answer is that she doesn't care about anything because she expects the world to cater to her...and she's going to get a hard lesson when it doesn't give a care about what she wants.

While it may not have changed anything, OP should have told Lydia that it was her inheritance she was spending. How can anyone make an informed decision without all the information.

I agree he should have been clearer but he did point blank tell her if she spent all of what he was giving her there won't be anymore and she'd have to get a job for money. Even if it wasn't her inheritance that really should have been clear enough to listen to

If they can't even ask that one question, then they are a lost cause.

If I were her stepfather, I would have asked Lydia to ask her mom for the money or whatever. And I would have also made sure to sign a prenup with Lydia's mom. This whole story is a one way. As a stepfather, you don't keep giving handouts everytime your stepchildren asking you for money, whether it's their inheritance or the allowance. Stepfather should have spoken to his wife and deposited the inheritance money in some funds, where she could use it after she was 21 years old. This would have saved the inheritance and avoided her becoming a spendthrift.
