  • I took Spanish classes at Harvard, and it was great to see the techniques top universities use to teach languages. I shared the books, films, and resources we used from my Harvard Spanish classes in case any of them are helpful to you in your language-learning journey.

I’ve been in a slump these last few weeks with self study 😢 feeling like I’m not making any process and self doubt settled. Thank you for reminding me how important it is to learn a second language and remain curious about it. While I’m not past the slump stage I’m experiencing right now, I am hopeful that things will change in the coming days and weeks. You’re Awesome! 🎉

You're so kind 🫶🏽. I used to keep a little chest of things to look at to re-spark my love for the language back when I hadn't made much progress. It was simple-mainly fun shows, songs, and people I liked that had also learned the language as non-natives. It was a good little motivation boost I'd use whenever I lost steam.

Algorithm is a funny thing; i havent seen one of your videos in a while and then this one appeared. What a great and joyous video this was to watch. It was even exhausted learning all the work you had to do over those 4 years at Harvard. Congratulations! You really learned so much and gave it your all.
I was fortunate enough to take two French courses at the Harvard Extension and they were superb. Both teachers were amazing and I learned so much. That was about 30 years ago. I cant imagine how much it would cost today.

That means a lot! I'm sure we all had our unique trials and tribulations at Harvard-it was certainly a humbling experience that pushed me beyond recognition, and I'm incredibly grateful for it. Much of it was a labor of love, and the rest was a valuable trial by fire that helped me build resilience. I'm happy you enjoyed the courses you took-I'm contemplating starting a new journey to learn French next year if I'm able to finish adding some features to the language app by year's end. Thanks again for your encouraging words 🙏🏽

How funny this video came up on my feed. I just finished my associate for transfer in Spanish. I am now going to get my bachelors in the language at the university. The problem now is that I do not know what school to choose, Cal State Fullerton or Cal Poly Pomona. I understand that CCP is the better option academically however I am also taking other things into consideration. I am happy that I will finally get to focus on my major and got the general education classes out of the way. It was really discouraging taken classes in high school again at the college. My whole time at the jr college I only took two Spanish classes, had to take statistics, US history, geology and other BS. I was wearing me out so much I wanted to drop out.
I remember starting community college and not knowing what what to major in. I went to through economics to commercial airline pilot and finally after seeing that I did not like any of that, I landed on Spanish. I figured out that I love it. The languages is so much more easier than English in it's reading and writing. (This should be the universal language, much more user friendly than English) I plan on getting my masters in Spanish and then once I am done with Spanish I plan to get learn ASL.

Good luck with diving back into school! Everyone's experience will be unique, so take mine with a grain of salt and make your own call freely - my bias after going through uni is to go to the place where classmates (and perhaps professors) inspire me.
I spent most of my time at uni with my classmates, and it was special getting to be around people I wanted to be more like in some way. As for the academic content itself, it mainly fell on me to learn at the end of the day, and I supplemented the content I got from uni with my own research, so I think I could've learned the material anywhere, but I can't say the same for finding the people I met there.
But as they often say-it's sometimes easier to take a decision and make it perfect than to take a perfect decision. So I suspect you'll have a bright future regardless of the decision you make if you put your all into it. Excited for you! 🙌🏽

Can you say more about your very first Spanish class? Did you truly have zero Spanish exposure and then take a literature class taught fully in Spanish? Asking from a pedagogy perspective (am a native speaker and teacher of HS Spanish). This seems counter to language acquisition so I’m wondering what your actual level of understanding was at the start of the course. And is that level (reading authentic literature from day 1 the “standard” for Harvard? Thanks so much! Great video of your journey!

I did have some background when I started Spanish @ Harvard - I had taken Spanish classes in middle & high school and was likely at a B1 level by the time I got to uni. There was a class for absolute beginners at Harvard, but even that class worked up very quickly to speaking in Spanish for most of the class time; speaking seemed to be emphasized throughout all the language classes.
If helpful, I covered my full Spanish journey from 0 to now here: ruclips.net/video/YsH3B9qVShE/видео.html

When people say that learning a second language won't be necessary because of AI, they surely mean if English is your first language. Let's see if anyone dares to say that learning English won't be necessary anymore...
Also, do they expect ALL businesses to rely on AI devices in order to interact with some of their employees and customers? It's such nonsense. Learning a second language is now, and will always be, one of the best things you can do in order to improve your life.
Those who say that it won't be necessary anymore are usually people who are not even into learning languages to begin with, so they feel like they finally found a good reason to excuse their laziness. I picture them as the kind of people that, after having learned English, would still watch an American series in Spanish if it was dubbed, instead of enjoying the language that they learned, because they talk about languages like they are just tools.

You raise a lot of great points here. As somewhat of a tech nerd, I hesitate from saying "never" with regards to technological capabilities we'll have in the future with AI.
But as someone who loves languages, I wouldn't bet that we'll see learning multiple languages disappear anytime in the next few decades.

@@JerryRegistre I guess what I was expecting when I clicked on the video was that you were gonna break down what methods they used and what the lessons were like. I was kinda curious on more what of what homework was like to. Something else I was expecting, was that you were gonna include what sources they used, like if they used certain text books or work books. Another thing was that you included that segment of what it was like for you in college, which I did find interesting but not relevant.
