I think that Jimmy’s take here is bad, really bad. Criminally bad. Lachlan seems like a very nice guy and I think that this very much a situation where a rising tide raises all boats (at least for now). So, if people get excited by the challenges that they see Lachlan do, then that just brings more excited people into the areas of cycling that Lachlan is touching on. I don’t think that Lachlan is taking oxygen out of the room for other cyclists, I think he is probably adding more oxygen for everyone if anything. He has a lot of resources behind him so he always has the slickest production videos, but I don’t see how that’s his fault or why he needs to be taken down a notch for that. And he remains a beast on the bike, so it’s strange to try to say otherwise. It’s especially weird for Jimmy to say that he’s “repulsed.” I’m repulsed by Antonio Tiberi shooting a cat (taking a random example from *actual* bad cycling behavior), but I’m not sure why we should be repulsed by Lachlan. I can’t tell if Jimmy’s perspective is just sort of a devil’s advocate thing or if he really wants to take Lachlan down a notch for some weird reason. Maybe it’s to bait viewers into to engaging and reacting in the chat, like I’ve done here, but that’s pretty sad too.
Great take on this. Lachlan is definitely underrated. I think Jimmy knows this and is just trolling for views and comments. I think he is trying to be controversial. He doesn't necessarily believes what he says. A bit like Jeremy Clarkson but unfortunately not quite as good or effective. Shame that Jimmy could not expand on reasons why Lachlan is overrated. If Jimmy was a bit more knowledgeable about Lachlan and what he brings to cycling he could have contributed more to the conversation and give a more educated opinion. The repulsive comment was totally below the belt. Total cheap shot. The great thing about Lachlan is that he covers the whole spectrum of the sport. I also think his media and cycling image can still grow and expand and has huge potential to be even bigger.

What is so special about Lachlan is that he doesn't give a fuck about what anyone else thinks - especially the media. He doesn't do it for official records - he does it just to see if he can. He is not an ego looking for a fan club. He is about as laid back as it get's.
He’s raised over a million dollars for other people by riding his bike. I’d say that’s something we’d ALL love to do. Not only that supporting himself and helping his brother have a film career. If we just leave it at that then he’s accomplished more than all of us in the last few years.

Lachlan is probably the only one of the ultra crowd who has finished a grand tour and he has a team of media producers tending his feeds. He seems genuine to me and that's important.
Had to comment again because Jimmy’s attitude on this is just SO bothersome. The man who is constantly railing on the stupidity of performance statistics then proceeds to criticize Lachlan almost entirely based on his performance relative to others. And blames the rider for the marketing of the industry. By the way, Lachlan’s choices are PRECISELY because he just wants to ride his bike all the time, but doesn’t want to be a world tour rider. Jimmy, answer me this: which of the other riders you mentioned rode a bike from Poland to the Ukraine border to raise funds for victims of the war?? And which of these other riders also absolutely obliterated the Tour Divide record??
Why would Lachlan Morton be overrated just by comparing him to a handful of people who don't get more attention? They're all underrated. This relativism makes no sense, and the "stuffed down my throat" attitude is insufferable.
Yeah that was a prickish thing to say. “Stuffed down my throat” = “I see an EF RUclips video of Lachlan come out every 3 to 6 months and it offends me”
On top of winning the Tour of Utah which is definitely a tough event with former winners like Levi Leipheimer and Tom Danielson. If Jimmy’s comments are to elicit views (and I think they are) this channel lost me. The simple reason we hear about Lachlan is because he is still placing in the top 10 of the best gravel races in the world and manages to take on the most grueling alternative races/challenges others would/could never do. Oh and as someone else wrote, he’s a cool dude. Approachable at every race I’ve had the opportunity to talk to him at. Guy will just talk to you. Super cool dude. Plenty of room in the sport of cycling for more of what Lachlan’s doing and I applaud anyone riding the ultra routes he’s riding. However, I challenge Jimmy to put any of their resumes next to Lachlan’s. And why use the word “repulsed” to make your point Jimmy? Think this channel should show more respect instead of being disrespectful for views. Unsubscribing now.
You mate, are just confirming the reputation the English have in Australia as "whinging bloody poms". Even my English father in law said to me recently that poms are whingers. There seems to be a real negativity in England in general. If you look at Lachy, even at the end of 500 km days, he stays positive. Be like Lachy.
He gets the shine because his teams are good at social media. Rapha, Cannondale, EF are all fantastic at it. Very few other brands rival those, and those brands have all chosen Lach to be their guy for socials. It's worked.
Lachlan Morton is completely underrated. The man is crushing ultra cycling and making Cannondale money on the off season. All I have to list off is his feat at “The Alt Tour,” “The Divide,” and now “Around Australia.” I’m sorry, but for as purist as the French are about the tour, my boy Lachy showed them how it was done and beat the peloton to Paris by five days! Five Days! #Underrated
The question about why other ultra riders are in the media can be answered quickly: They don't ask for media attention and some just don't want it. Lael tried to get the FKT for Tour Divide and the reason she had to abandon was heart-breaking.
After what Lachlan accomplished yesterday, I think Jimmy needs to re-assess his opinion. Won Unbound in the fastest ever time amongst the fastest pros in gravel racing (both US and European) today.
Jimmy's take is hilariously awful here, he just sounds like a jealous, bitter little piss-pot. Cycling isn't a zero-sum game, so if someone does something incredible they deserve the kudos they get. To put Lachlan in perspective, Mark Beaumont - a very well-known ultra-endurance athlete who has had a long career of mind-boggling feats of endurance - has the second-fastest GB Duro completion time, around 5 days and 15 hours. Lachlan's time on the inaugural running of the race? 4 days, 15 hours. He's AN ENTIRE DAY faster than one of the best-ever ultra-distance cyclists. Lachlan rode the Tour Divide 33 hours faster than the standing record, and he achieved his time without a rear derailleur for the final 1000km. And Jimmi reckon he's overrated? Pfafffffffffffffff
Just because a rider doesn’t get media attention it does not equate to Lachlan being overrated. He is incredible and seemingly humble. And he loves riding his bike. To ride. He just happened to be good enough to be a pro!! Mr.Cade you summed it up well and you get my “vote” per se. 😬
Whinging effing Pom!!! Lachy won unbound, and as I write this he's almost halfway into his 'round Australia ride, and average 500kms a day. Yesterday he rode 448 kms and averaged 35 kph for 12 hours and 45 minutes, in the top end of Australia in extreme heat. Most Poms would drop dead on the side of the road just standing there 😂
I loved your media, even considered ordering Attacus jersey overseas. But Jim's opinion just shocked me and ruined it. Why are we hearing more about Lachlan and not others who were mentioned? Because charisma, because style, his story and his soul. That's exactly what sets him apart - his personality. He really makes cycling more interesting and relatable by sharing his approach to it, and doing what he does. What Jim said, makes me want to unsubscribe. Very unexpected level of not getting it.
Lachy and EF were the first to send actual UCI pros to the Unbound/Dirty Kanza -- the next growth step after retired pros lit the fire. Lachlan and his brother were filming outback adventures in Australia before the boom of RUclipsr's making it into a profitable thing -- he'd be doing this regardless. He's not being forced on anyone -- he loves to ride and is likable.
I believe Lachlan has said he is not comfortable with the traditional pro road cycling milieu and this was a prime motivator for him to do this other type of riding. He’s also very, very good at it…just set a fkt on the great divide.
I think these elitist road cyclists can't stand the fact that Lachlan had enough of the pretentiousness of the world tour and moved on. GCN also talked smack and now these certain road folks are eating their words #unbound200
"Why aren't we hearing more about these people?" I can only speak to the coverage of Wilcox's feats, races etc, and she's gotten more coverage over the years than Morton. I think, honestly, that his "rise to fame" in the adventure cycling "community" for Morton is mainly his super relaxed character and that he makes it look easy - and the fact that he has both Rapha and EF (and now Tailfin) producing and churning stuff out where he's the star. Wilcox has, from what I can remember, only been backed by Specialized. But no, he's not the Van der Poel of the adventure cycling/bikepacking scene, but I think - as most riders are dudes - he gets recognised more often and more guys gravitate more towards him than, say, a Lael Wilcox.
You cannot compare any of the top ultra riders, unless they are riding in the same race. Is Morton as good as Kristof, is Kristof as good as Strasser, is Strasser as good as Abdullah? Could any of them beat Sarah Hammond at Race to the rock. I like Morton. He works hard and tests new things.
I dont think you can really compare Lachlan to Mike Hall or Fiona Kolbinger. They both had day jobs, engineer and medical researcher and are both very, very good amateur riders. Lachlans route into ultra was by a completely different route but he doesnt act or look like he has. He's just a really, really nice guy with a super attitude about riding bikes. Fiona is also a classical pianist (and has been known to play at control points sometimes) so shes got one up on Lachlan unless he can play the didgeridoo. Jimmys just nasty 😂
Jimmy , Lachlan is a pro cyclist. Companies sponsor the team for the publicity the riders provide them. If the riders don't get them publicity the team will not renew their contract. It's his job and he has a family to provide for. I like him as he strikes me as someone who loves to ride his bike but he's not afraid to do it in a non traditional way. Also he can ride world tour AND ultras. I've got alot of respect for ultra distance riders, but most of them would not last ten miles in a pro peloton.
Lachlan is so not part of the pro cycling "bubble" this guy mentions. He should watch how Lachlan finishes the Alt Tour - a bottle of champagne on the side of a busy road with a few friends. He then wins Unbound 2024, breaks the Tour Divide record, cycles around Australia in record time. I am going out on a limb, but I think he really likes riding his bike. The fact he rides for EF Education is irrelevant in my opinion. If anything, he is underrated, as is Lael Wilcox.
Jimmy, ... Sorry mate, but you just sound petty. Research everything he's done and achieved. Lachlan Morton is extremely talented. Have a look at some of the events he's blown people away like Badlands, Lands end to John of groats ..... He has amazing stamina and mental strength. Just my opinion.
I am an MTBer, I love MTBs and I admire Lachlan. I admire how he uses MTBs in most of the gravel races and gets podium finishes. It shows that in many gravel races, an MTB is actually more capable (than a gravel bike) with the correct setup. Lachlan was able to prove that, and I like him for it.
Who cares if Lachlan is spectacular or not? He seems to me like a really decent bloke, riding his bike for a very long way. He isn’t doing all the media pushing, that’s done for him with the benefits more for sponsors than him himself. Good on him for doing it, making a living out of it and enjoying life. Not sure why or where the dislike is coming from?!
Lachlan Morton transcends cycling or he almost does. As a runner, I have a very passing interest in cycling but his videos are one of the few I will take time out of my day to watch.
Fiona Kolbinger is working full time as a medical researcher, so she is a doctor but in research in my understanding. And indeed she probably doesnt want more attention, and is cycling for fun and not for income.
I get the objection to media hype but in an age of multi discipline athletes and new attitudes he deserves all the attention he gets. Look at the results across all of the different races, he finishes in the top of all of them. Name another rider who competed in all those different events. Then consider the top level character and role model he is. I wouldn’t say over or under rated, spot on. What’s better he doesn’t care what you rate him…
Over and under are both wrong. Lachlan is perfectly rated. He’s unapologetically who he is, he rides because he loves it, and he genuinely cares about the joy of riding. he talks openly about being burned out and disenchanted with pro cycling because of the person he was at that competitive level. He makes a point of being an ambassador for cycling - see his charity work - as a sport we can all take part in and bucks the traditional stuffy pro status quo. He also would never concern himself with the idea of being perceived as over or underrated. He’s never demonstrated having that kind of ego, and considering his ability, that’s a good thing to see. Whether or not he is, Jimmy comes off as a hater here.
I think Jimmy can’t put Lachy in a cycling category. He must loose a lot of sleep at night not being able to put Lachlan in just ONE category and a paid appropriately for that job. Lachlan is challenging what it is to be modern day pro cyclist.
Is he overrated? Well to my mind that depends on what is being rated. If unbelievable passion for ultra distance is a measure, then he's arguably up there with the best of them and can't be overrated as they're all supreme athletes at that level. But were there a media-led suggestion that he was the best there is, then it would be fair to say he was being overrated - but there isn't, instead the media is showing us a naturally talented, enigmatic and "cool" athlete doing "his thing" in such a way that he's brought unprecedented, worldwide attention to the previously relatively unknown, niche world of ultra distance almost as a by-product of his riding - and in that respect I'd say he's underrated. His well-known backstory preceded his entry into ultra distance and made him an immediate star before he'd turned a pedal in competition of course - it must have felt like a millstone around his neck - but his talent prevailed and the new viewers loved it. He wasn't happy as a World Tour rider, but he appears to be loving his life now - and it shows so clearly that (to my mind at least) ultra distance can only benefit. As for being "repulsed", I'll leave that comment alone as it might be seen as a kind of jealousy. Cycling as a sport needs it's heroes, losers, villains and "cool" guys, they're all inspirational in some way - and he's one of them. I say underrated. Very much so.
How is his name pronounced ? LACLAN or LOCKLAN. I think these guys know the answer to that but I digress. The coverage he gets isn't by his own doing - Rapha have promoted him as an alternative to road cycling and he has aced it. In my humble view he is the only good thing Rapha is doing at the moment - they have lost the plot and if you want to see how much check the number of views they get on the stuff they post, it is pathetic for a company that size. 12 months from now all they will be doing is selling oversized hoodies, track pants and shitty fashion things. Watch this space. Go well Lachlan - love your work & a down to earth Port Macquarie lad.
Jimmy...you are being a bit of a d**k here. Lochlan has also raised a tremendous amount of money while doing these hard rides. He has a very relaxed way about him that I wish we saw more of in cycling (and other sports). It also is great to type this after he won (and set a time record even with taking a wrong turn) Unbound.

Lachlan is a great guy! He truly loves cycling and is great for the sport.
He raised 500k World Cycling Relief in 18 days. Riding over 5000km. Legend.
Turns out, no.
Haters gonna hate.
I think Jimmy is Overrated.
Still sure about this one boys?
OG thereabouts is the best cycling film ever made. no one will convince me otherwise.
and the custom-composed soundtrack, right?
lads you gotta do this video again since Lachlan won unbound lel
I believe Lachlan has said he is not comfortable with the traditional pro road cycling milieu and this was a prime motivator for him to do this other type of riding. He’s also very, very good at it…just set a fkt on the great divide.
He said he didn’t like the person he was when he was in a road race.
I think these elitist road cyclists can't stand the fact that Lachlan had enough of the pretentiousness of the world tour and moved on. GCN also talked smack and now these certain road folks are eating their words #unbound200
Lachlan is a legend, period, next
"Why aren't we hearing more about these people?"
I can only speak to the coverage of Wilcox's feats, races etc, and she's gotten more coverage over the years than Morton.
Come on jimmy…
5 October 2024. Should this be revisited...
Time for a follow up after unbound?
Click bait, wtf do you add to cycling? Oh look another ‘influencer’
Mmmm. I'd say Lachlan is freaking fucking spectacular
this thumbnail didn’t age well i reckon
Lachlan is massively passionate about riding, Jimmy is very under educated regarding Lachlan.
Francis spot on ❤
Gotta be major clowns to even ask this
I dont think you can really compare Lachlan to Mike Hall or Fiona Kolbinger.
No!
Interesting debate but the important question is Jimmy, where is your shirt from? I like it.
He is spectacular because he gets all the attention from media and we love it.
🔥🔥🔥
Would love to see him back in the pro peloton. I'm sure he makes more money doing his own thing.
Can we simply replace Jimmy with Emily?
When Lachlan does it, he goes deep, and makes sure he has the correct setup. Victory loves preparation.
Yeah, this was really uninsightful in any way possible.
Fiona Kolbinger is working full time as a medical researcher, so she is a doctor but in research in my understanding. And indeed she probably doesnt want more attention, and is cycling for fun and not for income.
You’ve had an absolute shocker here Jimmy.
What’s better he doesn’t care what you rate him…
No, he is not. He is amazing, and a great ambassador for the sport.
RUclips nobody tries to denegrate one of cycling's true assets. Well done, it's a good look for you (sorry what is his name again?)
😂 Well i think his recent lap around Australia beating the FKT by a week would put this to bed. Legend status!
If it wasnt Lachlan it would be someone else. Have you seen the gravel racing circus lately? Exactly. I think what he does is great for cycling.
I think Jimmy can’t put Lachy in a cycling category. He must loose a lot of sleep at night not being able to put Lachlan in just ONE category and a paid appropriately for that job. Lachlan is challenging what it is to be modern day pro cyclist.
and Lachlan wins Unbound against the most stacked field ever.......just a reminder of how talented he is across the board Jimmy.
Actually Jimmy, I think you owe Lachlan AND the people following this channel, an apology.
I was so late to this video, would y'all please do a refresher.
A critic is one that cannot be. You should be embarrassed that this was a topic
UNDERRATED without a doubt.
Amazing beautiful guy.
Jimmy...you are being a bit of a d**k here. Lochlan has also raised a tremendous amount of money while doing these hard rides. He has a very relaxed way about him that I wish we saw more of in cycling (and other sports). It also is great to type this after he won (and set a time record even with taking a wrong turn) Unbound.
wow. How embarrassing. Used to emjoy Cade Media but this is so far from accurate I don't think I can take anything they say seriously now
