  • This video shows how to use some pneumatic equipment to make a Halloween witch that jumps out of a bin once the passive infrared sensor is activated. To make this project you will need a suitable compressor, a pneumatic cylinder or rod less cylinder, a 12 volt, five port three way pneumatic solenoid valve, a 12v Passive infrared sensor, some wire and a 12v battery. You will also need a zombie or a witch to pop out of the bin. The witch in this video was purchased from B&M bargains.
Once this equipment is set up you are guaranteed hours of fun with the kids, or just scare the neighbours.
Special thanks go out to my neighbours Ian and Carole who were really good sports in this video ;-)

Wow! What a great Halloween prop! Well done
We had about 75 Tricker Treaters at our
Door last. Could have used a couple of the scary surprises!
    Best from Buffalo.

Thanks Roy, we did not get that many but had a fair amount.
Because it was dark I did not get much video footage of it scaring people, apart from a delivery driver who was really funny!

Long shot....but how do I get the circuit to work....every time I try I just get the solenoid light on. Do I need to break open the pir to make it work?

I'm just curious about that fantastic cylinder. Where would you get one like that and how much would it cost?

I bought a few of them at auction, If I remember rightly I bought three of them, plus 5 double acting pneumatic 100mm stroke cylinders for £145 all brand new.
You can sometimes get them cheap on ebay-

To buy a 400mm long one brand new, it would probably be £200+

Amazing job UHM. Would love to make this. Any ideas on costs? Also, what size compressor would you recommend? The solenoid valve - been looking on ebay but cant find a 5 port 3 way. Can you add a link maybe for an e-bay item that would do? Found a rodless Cyclinder for £25! Again - great work.

Thanks, sorry for the late reply I missed this comment and have just seen it.
You do not need a huge compressor to run something like this, mine just has a 25L tank and works well for most small jobs.
I'm not sure of the total cost as some things were bought cheaply at auction.
This is the valve that I used- fave.co/2dKvOEW

This is a great project. I have always wanted to build but never knew how. But I still don't. The parts you mention sound like chop sewey to me. Could you list make and model numbers please? I realize its a pain and maybe you have included enough info that I should be able to get it myself but I have never actually used pneumatic equipment. So I'm not sure which end is up. Thanks for all your videos. This one is great.

      Hi,
I’ll provide links to the exact items I used on ebay, but
you will also need the witch (bought from B&M bargains). You will also need
a compressor to generate the compressed air. The rod less cylinders can be very
expensive and are about £400 if bought new ( I bought three for £145 at auction
). You can of course use a normal pneumatic cylinder with a similar stroke
(800mm) which will be cheaper but more difficult to mount and fasten brackets
      to etc.
      5 port 2 way solenoid valve 12v fave.co/1WorwBJ
      12v PIR sensor- fave.co/1jX8Ywx
      5 pneumatic connectors- fave.co/1OdpZ2l
8mm pneumatic tube to connect it all together- fave.co/1WoscH8
      2 adjustable silencers- fave.co/1Odr8Hc
Limit switch for switching the LED’s on and off- fave.co/1jX9BGz
Some suitable cable to wire it up (three core for the PIR
and two core for the LED’s)
      Rodless cylinder- fave.co/1LGHXGu
      12v LED strip - fave.co/1Wotpy4
And of course a 12v Battery to power it all ( I used my
Milwaukee batteries from my 12v tools)
I also used some heat shrink sleeving and also some boot
      lace ferrules.
      I think that is everything.

Hi, how have you run the air line in to the bin? Thanks

    • @ultimatehandyman

      +Richard Grant
      Hi,
I drilled a 1" hole in the back of the bin near the top, I then fed the air line which is only 8mm and the cable for the PIR through that hole and concealed both in the bushes. The air line then runs about 20 metres and connects directly to the compressor.
      Thanks for the comment

Hi, how did you attach the watch head to the piston? It looks sturdy. Thanks

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

I used a bent piece of aluminium which bolted to the carriage on the cylinder, the witch was then bolted to the aluminium.
