One of my favorite Indianapolis 500s of all time! The 2nd century of North American racing started with a bang! 1. The pre race. 2. Different engine, chassis, and tire combinations. 3. The last Indianapolis 500 to be part of the CART schedule. 4. USAC may have screwed up with officiating, but at least it's laughably bad. 5. Many different leaders. 6. Jacques Villeneuve becomes the first Canadian to win the Indianapolis 500. I will say 1995 is up there with some of the best races. If only instead of a pass on the pace car, we got a Scott Goodyear Jacques Villeneuve 10 lap duel. 🏁

Even the smaller teams that didn't have much success in Formula find their way at Indy and compete on an equal level on this stage. It's really incredible...

I was 10 when I saw this race and my father loves racing but wasn’t a big indycar fan because how unsafe it seemed compared to NASCAR. As soon as he saw Stan Fox’s legs completely exposed he turned it off and never watched an indycar race again.
A very wide open race without Penske. Man I feel for Scott Goodyear even though He Passed the Pacecar no matter the speed it was illegal. Goodyear and Villeneuve photo finish in 95 we never saw?
Goodyear would have ran away. He never pitted after the penalty he was literally 300 yards ahead at lap 200. I blame the pacecar driver for not accelerating where they should have Goodyear got fucked that year.
Contrary to the opinion of others, I feel this was a great race (I watch the 500 every year). Much drama in the way of lead changes and crashes punctuated the exciting proceedings -- too many too enumerate. People are quick to pile on USAC and excuse the mental errors and childish egos of drivers. Villeneuve's performance in coming all the way back from 2 laps down was tremendous. Other story lines could be mentioned as well. Also liked this broadcast team (Sam Posey's last hurrah, by the way), and miss the passion that Bobby Unser brought.
Definitely an underrated race (I’ve seen it 30+ times by now) and packed with drama that almost seems scripted the more you look at it, the way some of it is foreshadowed and then it happens 30 laps later. It’s actually one of my favorites. I wouldn’t be so quick to defend USAC but the fact they screwed both Villeneuve and Goodyear kinda evens things out in my mind. The older I get, the more I view USAC in this era as permanently vindictive over the 1979 split, itching to strike out with the hammer of discipline whenever possible. Sort of like “you boys think you can run your own races but when you come to our little fiefdom you’re gonna do it our way even if our way changes lap by lap.”

Jacques recovered both laps he lost because in two different occasions the yellow flag was thrown when he was leading the field. Technically Jacques was never 2 laps down in terms of track position itself. He was still in the first positions of the race on track and got benefited by the time that in 2 occasions cautions were thrown when he was still on track while the race leader were already pitted

Where are those old ABC Firesuits? I think it would be awesome if similar to what NASCAR did a few years ago, Indycar embraced the height of its 90s popularity and did a throwback event. Everyone in the field encouraged to rock 90s apparel, hairstyles, put the broadcast teams in 90s duds, etc. It would be fun, I bet a lot of the drivers would like it. Can totally picture a guy like Newgarden having fun with it.
NASCAR still has the throwback weekend at Darlington on Labor Day weekend; since IndyCar's Pocono race weekend is already celebrated with a vintage racing festival, the INDYCAR people should make Pocono their "throwback weekend". (Also, since I'm from NJ, Pocono is my home track).
Ive never understood how Scott Goodyear could set there at the end of the race and say that he thinks he won fair and square and doesnt think he did anything wrong after blowing past the pace car in the middle of turn 4 at 150mph, missing it by what looked like inches. It was the most obvious and blatant mistake that was obviously going to result in some sort of penalty. It was far worse and more dangerous that what Villenueve supposedly did that got him a rediculous 2 lap penalty which never should have been given.

3:00:00 Scott Goodyear clearly passed the pace car in violation of the rules and was assessed a stop-and-go penalty. Jacques Villeneuve was waved by the past care twice and was assessed a two lap penalty. Even if you ignore the fact that Villeneuve's error was caused by the race stewards it seems unfair to give such unequal penalties for the same violation. Still if I were in Scott's place I would have ignored the black flag as well. He clearly didn't realize he had past the pace car, or at the very least felt the penalty was unfair (many of them had been in this race). If he takes the penalty he'd lose the race. A future appeal would not change that. But if he ignores the black flag at worst he'd be disqualified but he could appeal later. If USAC decided to overturn the penalty later he could then be listed as the race winner.
jtp2007 I remember watching this race live, yes, it id seem to be a bit weird. But consider this: Villeneuve overcame a two lap penalty. 2 of his laps were taken away. In effect this was NOT the Indy 500. It was the Indy 505! I think Villeneuve fully deserved the win here. Awesome driving and awesome pit crewing made the difference. What other 500 mile races were won by being a full 2 laps ahead of every other car? Emerson Fittipaldi was nearly two laps up in one race, but he crashed out trying to pass his team mate who was himself a full lap ahead of 3rd place. When I saw that I just cried.
jtp2007 Yea. It was a big crash. The back of the car just stepped out a little. He struck the wall but that was enough. I was glad for little Al (I've been a fan of his) but I felt so bad for Em-oh"
It really was a joke, CART ran 15 or so reasonably well-officiated races during the year, but May would roll around and it would be time to run the biggest race of the year to a rulebook that was seemingly made up on the fly, and enforced with a parochial smugness - "you boys race your way the rest of the year, but now you're in our house and you race our way" - that I guess foreshadowed the IRL adventure. I just got done re-watching the 1994 race, which I hadn't seen in a while, and the confusion over whether to have a restart at the end of lap 199 was so comprehensive that even Duane Sweeney was left to shrug in the starter's stand. Amazing.
Mike Jiran i don’t understand why Tony George sided and continued the USAC sanctioning and the old as hell Tom binford. However the IRL was supposed to bring in USAC midget and sprint car drivers and prevent them from leaving to NASCAR. Jeff Gordon the Hoosier born and raised was supposed to be the next AJ Foyt in Indycar racing and Tony George along with IMS as very upset he wasn’t going to be racing in indycar. That had to be why he created the IRL.
@@robminmonaca Tom was Indy born and bred and a family friend. It was all about parochialism. CART wasn't without its problems, it really wasn't, but everything USAC/the Georges tried only made the problem worse.
Flynn Hagerty the 25/8 rule was not a good move at all. The IRL might have been better without using the 500 as way to commit to the IRL was to race for the Indy 500. IMS/Hulman-George’s had plenty of money to market the IRL like it was going to be so much better than the other racing organizations and sports leagues including NASCAR. One problem people don’t see was that CART was based in Detroit,Michigan while the biggest race and track was in Indianapolis. 1979 was still alive and well during the CART era in the USAC ranks and in Tony George’s mind and he thought it was a blasphemy what they did to his grandfather Tony Hulman’s legacy. However Tony George had to much power given to him.
Don't you like how Paul Page said that their was a former winner in the 8th row when they never previous won the 500. It's like page is a year later because Lazier won a year later in 1996.
I know this seems like good coverage of the race, but to have skipped the 50th Anniversary celebration and flyover is a major error. That B-17 flew over us so low I could actually see the rivets.
3:07:00 Could Scott Goodyear have held off Jacques Villeneuve if he hadn't past the pace car? I really don't think he could have. Villeneuve won the race by driving 505 miles. Clearly he was faster than Scott.
Meanwhile Christian Fittipaldi passed the pace car on restart at Road America 96 and no penalty. Why? Yes the rules were updated I"m sure since 95. The rules in Indycar in those days were changed race by race, lap by lap. Yes Indy was USAC but still the rule books in Indy car racing were just a suggestion. Why did Scott pass the pace car? Because he was experienced and didn't want to be another Kevin Cogan 86 and Nigel Mansell 93. You could add Mears 91 but he recaptured the lead. Jacques was fast. But Scott had the better car - Honda engine, Firestone tires. I speculate the finish of this race would have looked like 1991 with Goodyear pulling away. It is very unfortunate for all race fans that this race happened. It could have been the best Indy 500 ever.
largol33t1 It was about big money Tony wanted his way and tried to make it more affordable for the little guy I commend him for trying but things went haywire after a while and unification was the only way to save champcar and the other Indy teams after Tony George stepped down as president of the IRL then the healing began I'm glad the tradition of the Indianapolis 500 was not lost it's still the greatest spectacle in motor sports with the greatest and most daring and brave drivers ever to drive open wheel racecars.
Drex Mason then it lead to the IRL due the midget and sprint car drivers not given rides which they thought was a god given right like it was in the 50s.
Crazy when you read what happened to Stan Fox after the horrendous accident on lap 1. While driving for Ron Hemelgarn, Fox was seriously injured during the 1995 Indianapolis 500 in a serious accident. After starting ninth, Fox went low into the first turn on the first lap of the race and spun. His car connected with the car of Eddie Cheever, Jr. and slammed into the outside wall. Several other cars also became involved. The front nose-cone was ripped from his car, exposing his legs. Fox suffered serious head injuries which put him in a coma for five days and had surgery to have a blood clot removed from his brain. After a month, Fox had been moved from the Methodist Hospital critical care unit to a private room and was showing signs of improvement. The accident ended Fox's racing career but he stayed involved with the sport. He started the non-profit organization Friends of the Fox which supports people with head injuries and brings a person to the track each May to meet drivers and get VIP treatment. Fox was killed in a head-on collision on December 18, 2000, on the Desert Road some 200 miles (320 km) south of Auckland, New Zealand. Fox was driving through the night to attend a speedway meeting and collided head-on with a northbound truck and trailer Unit.

Funny you should say that. It was the first Indy 505. Jacques Villeneuve won after being penalized 2 laps (unfairly) for passing the pace car twice. Despite that he won the race by going 505 miles (202 laps) There are some who might say the 1955 Indy 500 was the last real Indy 500.
Steven Eppler It all depends on perspective I guess. I grew up with CART running the 500. This was the last year that CART was intact. By 96 they split into Champ Car and Indy Car.

For just 1 race Michael should have taken it easy and just stayed on the lead lap until the last 20 laps or so. Too many times he ran away from the field only to have something break. If not for so many cautions in 1992 he would have had the entire field at least 2 laps down.
Agree, I don't know why Sam Posey felt he was driving a conservative race. Felt like the same old Mikey, drive the wheels off the car...at lap 50. He was a genius over one lap, see him passing five cars at once on the outside at Milwaukee, but he was a car breaker. The complete opposite of Big Al Unser, who even nursed a Menard to the finish at Indy.
@@CandlestickSec7 Sam always seems a little clueless and/or putting a foot in his mouth. It's amazing how much better Uncle Bobby is. I've even come to prefer him to Derek Daly which is surprising me every race.
@@RobJaskula I used to think Uncle Bobby was a bit of a bully but he consistently talks more sense than Sam, which is a genuine surprise because Sam was no chopped liver as a racer. And his specialty was endurance racing, so you think he'd know a conservative drive when he saw one...
This was Stan Fox. Amazingly his legs weren't badly injured but he was otherwise badly hurt. He suffered a closed head injury and was in a coma for some time. He did recover and is still alive, but he never raced again. Look up "Stan Fox" if you want to read about it. I saw this live 20 years ago and when I saw it I figured he would lose both legs, but it wasn't his legs that were messed up.
Eric Taylor Interestingly in 1996 Helmergan team competed in the 500 miles since the IRL with Buddy Lazier occupying the car it was just Stan Fox. Lazier won and the team owner offered a portion of the milk given to the winner Stan pilot. In 2000, from what I read on a site here in Brazil he took a group of children suffering from health problems (they were an institution that he himself had created once he recovered from the accident) to watch the 500 miles. He died in 2000 in a car accident, it seems to me that in New Zealand. They say it was the result of a crisis of seizures he had while driving, and this crisis would be one of the sequels that hit he suffered at the start.
RAIDER LOPES MARTINS I did not know he died. It makes me sad. I just got home from a trip to Indiana. I got to tour the track. I was surprised how narrow it is.
It's pretty sad that Penske was unable to work with the engine changes. The engines from the last race were a success. Thinking it would be unfair advantage the next season that could escalate the cost between USAC and CART. Their change was a colossal mistake. The 1995 Mercedes-Benz engines were nothing but gremlins.
Nothing could possibly outclass Jacques Villeneuve on this day. Nothing. His brilliance here was nothing shy of what his father would perform. Get over it.
On the second last restart, Pruett accelerated coming into turn 4 and the pacecar was still on the track. You can see he had to slow up and it gave Goodyear a run which let him pass Pruett on the front straight. Fast forward to the final restart and for some unknown reason, Goodyear accelerates coming into turn 3! Goodyear screwed up badly and it's unfortunate because it would have been exciting seeing two Canadians fight for it to the end.
Especially to see Honda win this one. Not to mention, I like Scott Goodyear’s car paint job much better Villeneuve’s. It’s too bad we Honda fans had to wait 9 years to finally come out on top. GO BUDDY RICE!!!
Jack Arute tries so hard, and has for many years, but he and those other amateurs who snoop around the pits are a pain. Bobby Unser only has to speak about one sentence to put them all to shame.
I was at this race and sat in turn 3. I remember when the yellow flag came out on the first lap and didn't know why and luckily had the idea to record the race onto the vcr and saw how bad the first lap accident was. I lost total interest in this race compliments of Tony George the following year when the IRL was formed and I used to look forward to this race every year.
2:52:30 Why do they always make blatantly obvious comments like that? Clearly he drove the wheels of the car. Where are they in this picture? Cleanly no longer attached to the car! Maybe next time he'll wait a little longer to drive the wheels off. You have to drive at least 500 miles in this race. 505 miles in this case! 2:54:10 Is he not seeing what I'm seeing? Clearly something on the car broke. That's what happens when you slam into a wall at 200+ MPH, you car breaks. Sometimes your body breaks too.
How can USAC penalize a driver 2 laps for something like that when thier high tech system to get the field in order was just some dude waving his arms trying to get certain cars to pass and get others in line. They really screwed the race up big time. When Villenueve ended up winning anyway it was him basically giving a huge middle finger to USAC haha.
He did and finished in second place. Sometime later Peugeot fired him, I assume because JV doesn't follow the PR speech such teams demand. BMW did the same with JV in the middle of the 2006 F1 season.

almostfm IMS should have just let CART officiate the race by this point but USAC and IMS had that marriage due to it being started by Tony Hulman and wanting to keep his legacy alive and other bullshit reasons over USAC dirt and midget champs which led to the IRL.
Pace car driver made an inexcusable mistake, how can he be putting along at the speed he was in that situation? He HAD to be at top top speed a that point knowing that the leader would be hammering it from the start of the short chute. USAC's idiocy proved CART's point to a T during this race with idiotic officiating and things like the incompetent pace driver. Yet, what an epic race in an epic season during an epic era of Indy Car/CART...mid-80's-late 90's, it was the best open wheel series on the planet. Even with the crazy IRL split and loss of the 500. And then came the dark days....

Just wanted to say thanks for posting all of these races. I've been watching them all month. You are a hero!!!
Fantastic job by ABC sports.
It really builds up the excitement and gives you so much information on the drivers and cars.
James Farrell once Paul page left ABC and ESPN didn’t really care about the race and just came with cameras due to the contract agreement.
That's funny, I watched the '06 race yesterday and I remembered after all those years that ABC interviewed Marco after the race before Hornish....
Different chassis, different motors, different tires. We need more of this today in all forms of racing. Supercross needs 2stroke vs 4stroke, make factory bikes again also.

Thanks for uploading this! I remember seeing Stan Fox's legs sticking out the front of his car and immediately thinking of Salt Walther's crash when the same thing happened, not believing that I was seeing it happen again on live television. Crazy stuff!

Hell yea. Gets you jacked up for whatever it is that is comming after..
Trent Burgomaster it believe that the next without the IRL created by the track owner Tony George and would be had another rookie winner with Moore or Zanardi winning the race or Michel andretti breaking the curse or andretti luck.
As well as Honda winning Indy. At least they ultimately got it 9 years later. GO BUDDY RICE!

It still amazes me, especially back then, how heavily involved Formula 1 was when it comes to Indy 500. So many famous names and constructors/engine suppliers. Even the smaller teams that didn't have much success in Formula find their way at Indy and compete on an equal level on this stage. It's really incredible...
The only team I know of to ever win in F1 and Indycar was McLaren.

Exactly my good Man.
Before the Imola crisis of 1982; Gilles Villeneuve himself - relaxed before all the B's at Imola & Ferrari s betrayal (_"oh I Loved him like a son"_ lies - I guess that's why Gilles was seriously going to McLaren the next year - "loved him like a son" my ass.... Otherwise Gilles Villeneuve would not be considered to leave that misfit outfit - known as Ferrari - to casually dismiss P. Hill, Surtees and Lauda....drivers who helped gain Ferrari recognition that they never deserved.
Anyways in an old _'On Track'_ (American magazine) they interviewed Gilles in which he expressed engaging in the Indianapolis 500.
The fact that Jacques (his son got the job done) which I pleasantly watched on that day told me everything I needed to see - _"What If"_ had Gilles Villeneuve lasted.... And me along with many other Gilles fans got our answer that day.... When Jacques WON IT ALL - during the last CART engagement for the 500 event.

I was 10 when I saw this race and my father loves racing but wasn’t a big indycar fan because how unsafe it seemed compared to NASCAR. As soon as he saw Stan Fox’s legs completely exposed he turned it off and never watched an indycar race again.
Happened right in front of me
Head injuries though, he later died in a passenger car accident in new New Zealand
A very wide open race without Penske. Man I feel for Scott Goodyear even though He Passed the Pacecar no matter the speed it was illegal. Goodyear and Villeneuve photo finish in 95 we never saw?
z71pack however the rest of CART was their and still put on a good show.
Goodyear would have ran away. He never pitted after the penalty he was literally 300 yards ahead at lap 200.
I blame the pacecar driver for not accelerating where they should have
Goodyear got fucked that year.
No doubt contributing to the bigger split to follow

Jacques recovered both laps he lost because in two different occasions the yellow flag was thrown when he was leading the field.

No Penske`s qualified in `95? Did George Costanza have the file again?

Only driver to go 505 miles to win.
Eric Taylor To add, Bobby Unser makes a good point. The pace care was crawling, quite a bit slower than usual.
jtp2007 I remember watching this race live, yes, it id seem to be a bit weird.

USAC - Undeniably Sucks At Controlling (Races)
Usac couldn't officiate an egg and spoon race
Indeed. Makes one wonder why IRL stuck with them for as long as they did until that Texas debacle
I was there for my 50th bd...seats were 1st row at start but so lo could not see. Then a big accident with Gil Ferran causing it
Don't you like how Paul Page said that their was a former winner in the 8th row when they never previous won the 500. It's like page is a year later because Lazier won a year later in 1996.
I know this seems like good coverage of the race, but to have skipped the 50th Anniversary celebration and flyover is a major error. That B-17 flew over us so low I could actually see the rivets.

Thank you so much for this video.

Yes they did. JV was on top of the game, and most ignorant American announcers refused to conceive that fact.
Paul Page is the man. One of the best broadcasters in the sport.
I'm really surprised that they don't mention the driver's legs sticking out of the front of the car as it spins into the wall. Damn!
Eric Taylor Stan was killed in a traffic incident in Australia in 2000
Daniel Davidson This makes me very sad. I didn't know this.

I hate when the officials determine the finish, not to diminish the accomplishments of Villeneuve.
Nothing could possibly outclass Jacques Villeneuve on this day. Nothing. His brilliance here was nothing shy of what his father would perform.
Get over it.
Whatever happened to Jack Vilnerf?
It was a bad day for guys named Scott.
Scott Sharp: crashed
Scott Pruett: crashed
Scott Goodyear: black flagged
Scott Brayton: was the polesitter but didn't lead a single lap
Good observation
Race starts at 47:19
On the second last restart, Pruett accelerated coming into turn 4 and the pacecar was still on the track.
Florence Henderson did a Great Job! 👍🤘👊🇺🇸🔥
The very beginning of the end for Indycar.
Look at the restart after the first accident. The pace car was barely off the track when Scott Goodyear passed by.
It's a little disturbing to hear an actual medical doctor say "thankfully" a concussion caused memory loss.
The driver was lucky to suffer brain damage and loose memory.
Yeah, the 90s folks.

27 is the number!
Firestone bragging about their soft tire compound yet they’re making marbles all over the place making it hell if you get out of the groove.
JV should race in Le Mans. That way he can grab the Triple Crown before Alonso could.
He did and finished in second place. Sometime later Peugeot fired him, I assume because JV doesn't follow the PR speech such teams demand. BMW did the same with JV in the middle of the 2006 F1 season.

Arie Luyendyk looks like he really shoulda been in a Dutch 70s rock band
Shocking officiating from USAC.
Couldn't organise a piss up in a Miller brewery
It was like they were surprised every May that they were expected to organize a race when they'd just organized one the previous May.
almostfm IMS should have just let CART officiate the race by this point but USAC and IMS had that marriage due to it being started by Tony Hulman and wanting to keep his legacy alive and other bullshit reasons over USAC dirt and midget champs which led to the IRL.
What is the starting grid song?
Tom Blades-Europe
Pace car driver made an inexcusable mistake, how can he be putting along at the speed he was in that situation? He HAD to be at top top speed a that point knowing that the leader would be hammering it from the start of the short chute. USAC's idiocy proved CART's point to a T during this race with idiotic officiating and things like the incompetent pace driver. Yet, what an epic race in an epic season during an epic era of Indy Car/CART...mid-80's-late 90's, it was the best open wheel series on the planet. Even with the crazy IRL split and loss of the 500. And then came the dark days....
Now THESE were open cockpit racing cars!
Look at all of that debris up in turn 1 at the end of the race! They would never allow that nowadays.
Just paper.

The 1995 Indianapolis 500 was notorious for the black flag that became responsible for the failed upset victories of Scott Goodyear, Tasman Motorsports, and Honda. It was jointly produced by SilverStar Communications, Inc., Kampana Television Corporation, and Focal Media Arts, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on RPN-9 and World TV 21 on May 29, 1995, as the race was hosted by David Celdran and Angelique Lazo alongside the PBA on Vintage Sports Television panelists Ed Picson (Lap-by-Lap) and Quinito Henson (Color Commentary) as Commentators alongside Ronnie Nathanielsz, Tessa Jazmines, Anthony Suntay, Cara Subijano, Chino Trinidad, Cielo Villaluna, Dodie Lacuna, and Cathy Veloso-Santillan as Pit Reporters, as the narrator of the intro and the starting grid was Andy Santillan
