Building a Viking House with Hand Tools: Axe, Hammer, Auger, | Bushcraft Project (PART 4)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- We continue building a bushcraft viking house in the forest using hand tools only. Part 4 focuses on using the axe, auger and draw knife to build a viking bench, saw horse and spit for the stone clay fire pit ready to roast meat over the fire. Now that the cedar log foundations are in place, and the timber frame has been built, we are able to focus on making viking furniture such as the saw horse and bench using traditional woodworking techniques and hand tools. We use a draw knife to take off the bark of the cedar logs to help preserve them and prevent bugs and water from rotting the logs. I use an auger to drill holes for the legs of the saw horse. We then use a sledge hammer to drive in the legs. Using an axe and some wood wedges we also split a cedar log to make a bench for inside the viking house. We cook up food over the fire, this time southern fried chicken in the cast iron dutch oven over the viking long pit.
In Part 5 we focus on finishing the wood frame roof of the Viking House. We build the rafters, and build some pirlins too. As well as begin collecting the cedar bark ready for the cedar shingle roof. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the next episode!

I had that same dagger 😉
a trick : watch series at flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Anders Hayes yup, have been using flixzone for years myself :D
I completely respect others right to freely dislike content. I just have a real hard time understanding why 200 + peeps have disliked this video? Is this a majority of "professional" builders or "scolastic" history perfectionist? Along with a healthy batch of lack luster "Nay Sayers"? I say bravo gentlemen! Most of us only dream of such things as we are consumed by life. I would also say bravo to the family aspect of the build. This I am sure speaks deeply to the root of how these endeavors were truly accomplished in the old days of toil!!!
Bravo!!!
Sometimes it's just editing that gets disliked. Maybe they disliked the lack of music or found it too boring and calm because they are used to flashier content.
It's also possible that some vegan idiots were offendet that these guys cooked and ate meat.
Some people leave a dislike on every video they watch even if they like it idk why there just dicks
Maybe because some people are here to watch a log cabin get built and not a god damn cooking show.
Shoog82 I take it you disliked.
It’s part of his video dude it fits in with the bushcraft vibe but you can do as you please lol at least you have a reason to dislike the video
Corey Ritnour a video being disliked is technically a good thing, it means that his videos are being promoted by RUclips to a wider audience, some of whom would not like his stuff as much as those who stick around. But that also means new viewers!
Why do people put 👎👎👎 down on these guys, these guys rock in their craftsmanship. I give these guys 💯 👍👍 up!!!
Coming back from a 6 months deployment in Estonia to see this channel bursting with brilliant content. Done nothing but binge watch it all...
Connor Kitchen thanks :)
Stuck inside from a nasty heat wave in VIrginia. Watching you build in silence in the cold is so refreshing and relaxing. Can’t stop watching. As a chef I am also impressed with your campfire cookery. That calamari looked better than anything you get in a pub. The southern fried chicken looks mouthwatering. You Brits rock!
This is binge worthy video!
As a huge history nerd, these videos really excite me! The way that you just use what you've got, feels way more accurate than copying a past Vikings house (cause voyagers adapt to their surroundings). Also what your dad said about Vikings not eating with clean hands was kind of true, but fun fact! Actually the Vikings who settled in Britain were a lot more hygienic than the British(they'd go down to a river or water source and clean their faces, hair and beards often).
What I really like about this is the fact that you guys hardly say a word. It really brings out the background noises such as the crackling fire, the birds, tools, and natural sounds. It makes the viewer feel like they are right there with you guys, or at least that how I feel... or maybe I'm just baked.
This is my faveourite wood chopping channel every slice of wood is such satisfaction pure AESTHETIC
I must say, your dad is an absolute unit. From the way he talks, how hard he works, his banter - Although my dad is great, you've got a real banger 'n' mash.
My seventeen year old son and I absolutely love your videos. I have camped, fished, and hunted with him his whole life. Your vids have inspired us to build our own bushcraft camp this spring, a task we have yet to try. Keep up the great work!
From a southern boy, who is always exploring his European roots...thanks for what you are doing. The fried chicken looked perfect.

Is this part 4 or 5?
@@-DEATHSTROKE My bad! This is part 4, I've edited it :)
for your benches if you make another piece like the seat and dowel it to the back you get a backrest ... make a second set of holes to lay it flat and you turn one bench into 1 raised bed ... 4 dowels along the seam should be enough to support a back or body plus sleeping gear .... a good 4 benches and you can sit at 3 of them and use the 4th as a long table even .... this way every bench has more than one use possible and becomes very handy all around ..... a good thing to build would be a quick simple spoke shave bench as well ... makes dowels easy and comes in handy for all types of building needs
Looking forward to 5. U got me hooked
SuperLukejc next episode! Lol
I enjoy when u n your father do things together. Im a big fan of your pop. Lot of people dont do things like that any more. So sad. Family time is good. I love your videos. Very educational.
I really like it. I am from Germany, I'm 14 years old and I'm a big outdoor freak. What you do there is amazing
Love your dad....cherish him, my dad got sick had a stroke and for years he was laid up, then as he wished he died several years ago, still missing him. But love him real good and don’t be afraid to tell him you love him. You don’t have to get all mushy about it just hey pop love ya and move on! Love your video’s on this house building Viking style. Awesome!!!!
It's coming along nicely Mike. I had to laugh at your Dads comment:"You can't beat a bit of good bacteria".
He's right. A bit of dirt is healthy:)

Remember using a lot of the same tools on our farm in Canada with my granddad. Awesome video and a lot of memories for me. Thanks!
When TA Outdoors uploads a video, everything is less important 😀
True
So true
Yep peace be up on you✌️
seriously can I just say God Bless you for making these videos you have no Idea how many people you are helping SERIOUSLY very important information to those who want to know but don"t know where to look thankx
this is my therapy. thanks guys!
Yes! And featuring Graham the legend
You know those shows where sometimes the secondary characters end up owning the show? This is TA's dad. He's just so damn funny.
While watching the silent building, I almost fall into a zen like trance...almost soothing lol occasionally saying, "nice....ooooh, look at that. Perfection..." And then when the cooking starts, IRON CHEF: Bushcraft Edition! :)
Hi Mike, I hope you consider adding some diagonal bracing between the A-frames to prevent what is known as "racking". It's a serious issue that could cause the whole frame to come down in the future. At the moment, there is not much lateral force on the front or back of the structure, but if you add gable end walls, then the wind could generate a force that pushes the A-frames and the ridge pole all in the same direction. The only thing to currently withstand that force is the earth around the bottom of the A-frame poles, which may not be enough.
Despite how it may seem, having multiple A-frames in a row, each frame does NOT help the next one stand, even though they are connected with a ridge pole. This is because the connection point between each A-frame and the ridge pole is non-rigid (it can act as a hinge). This is known as racking.
The diagonal bracing would just look like some poles in the shape of an x, under the shingles between each A-frame. It would not intrude into the space or take up any room, but it would dramatically strengthen your structure.
In modern light frame construction, the anti-racking function of diagonal bracing is often served by rigid planes such as plywood, but since you won't have any in your building, please consider adding the cross-members.
Patcheye thanks for the tip
Sounds reasonable. I saw the devestation of front line winds wipe out the majority of a forest in Germany. The structure would be more sound with additional bracing.
Sounds like a man who built a couple of structures to live in I would listen to you if I were building something
Great pickup and add for him !! Your comment being one of the best I've seen to help!!
You and Dustin are a great team together. and you are really lucky to have a Father who has taken interest in your projects. I am envious but Kudos to you. Looking forward to seeing the finished project on this but at the same time - take your time, I enjoy watching each video. Thanks for providing great content.
Good to see your dad feeling better and back in the game, can't wait to get out there and start my own build! You guys are a huge inspiration! 👍
Craig Evans thanks Craig. Yep Dad is back to it and will feature in the next episode too. Best of luck with your build

I miss projects and outdoor cooking with my dad. Precious moments that should definitely be cherished. Once those days are gone, they are gone forever. Love these videos. Got a good plot of land with plenty of timber myself. I think it's just about time for my boy and I to start working on our own lodge 😉
Your dad is such a good sport and it's clear to see where your passion for the outdoor's come from. Cant wait for the viking house to be finished. Much love from Norway
I ABSOLUTELY love love love watching all 3 of you building and having fun
Your dad is a champ! 😁 👍 👏👏
He is!!
I love this channel, when I was a kid me and my siblings would built really cool forts in the woods behind our house. We built this one that was so cool. It had windows, a door and and the whole things was made from sticks and moss. We would even have sleep overs in it. My mom and dad would bring us snacks and check on us from time to time. We had a little fire outside the fort and would roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories. So watching these videos always bring me back to my child hood when I was always hanging out in the woods. I can watch your videos for hours lol.
This project is great, and your dad is a bloody legend. I wish your cool dad was my dad.
Hootywho thanks, be sure to head to TA Fishing and give him a sub!
I just have to say I suffer from stress related heart issues and watching your videos has been the most calming part of my day! love you guys you are Amazing. I can't wait for the next video.
These videos are awesome and it's cool that your dad is helping, keep up the good work.
Nice series, can't wait for the final product. Those closeups of drilling the sawhorse could qualify as an ASMR video, with the crunching of the wood fibers, the piling up of shavings, and all.
So stoked on that rectangular fire pit. Looking badass and functional gents!
I think it's great you and your dad enjoy working on projects like this.

TA outdoors and Joe Robinet with a video each 😁😁 Made my weekend there 😁😁
This build series is Awsome 👏🤓🤩👍 Love it !!!
I have a dream about building something like this.
I have been enjoying your videos, and my hubby ask why i am watching. Well dear, they have alot of ideas.... hint hint... Now my hubby is watching them. He loves them. I have learned alot from these. Please, do not ever loose your sense of humor and realism. Love watching what Bushcraft has in store for cooking. I need to get a cast iron dutch oven. Love'd the roast chicken idea. Don't worry I watch Bushcraft too. I got hooked on this show because of the little cabin you did with your dad. Yes, your dad is the best. Just like mine. My dad has always been good at building without a building design. Thank you for sharing your videos.
This is awesome. Love the relationship you have with your old man.
FANTASTIC BOYS, YOU TWO MAKE ME SMILE. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS PROJECT AND SHOWING IT AS BUILT!
I always get hyped when I see a new part of this build is uploaded :D Thank you very much for the great content!
I love this channel. I always learn something new (to me). So, you don't have to buy metal wedges to split wood. I always thought you had to and never tried to split any of the wood I get when the power company cuts down my trees. Now, I know. This is great.
First of all, I want to thank you for somehow that your videos have reached me. Having said that, it's time to apologize for not knowing English and not understanding what you say during the viking house series.
You will get two things with your new viewer the first was to get me stuck in this series I was already crazy hoping for a continuation and I was happy to see it and the second thing was to make me shame in the face and realize that I must learn other languages, I hope which is a good comment since I am using google translator.
Thank you very much for bringing your content and you have won one more, one from far away, I am from São Paulo in Brazil.
That more and more projects like this thank you again and that leave the next episodes soon
Caio Fera your English is very good!
When we work with nature we all speak the same language .I think you are proof of that! peace to you Caio.

Hey dad, the vikings were one of the cleanest people at the age they lived in, they were very clean. But after to remember them they made up storys that everybody thinks is truth. But YOU TREE ARE MAKING THE HOUSE AND ALL THE VIKING WAY! HAND MADE !
This is an unmissable project!. I can't wait for the next episode!
Respect to your dad and respect for you too.You are guys amazing!!!
Dad is so cool. I just love the guy!
Oh!! They bought a draw knife!! Used one as a kid to peel many many logs for my dad. Great memories!
So glad you guys are on this adventure so fun to watch cant wait for the next episode
So glad your dad is feeling better. You guys are doing such a great job on the Viking house. I'm pretty sure I've never cooked fried chicken camping before.
That's my Saturday morning all sorted with new videos uploaded by Mike, Dustin and Graeme. Love the firepit, southern fried chicken looks great and the sawhorse and benches are a great edition. Totally awesome as always and a relaxing way to spend a stormy Saturday morning down here after I pulled an allnighter editing. Love all you guys.
HI, I'm a relativly new subscriber and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this. Many years ago, when he was still here, I used to spend a lot of important time with my dad, enjoying nature out and about in the woods, seeing you with your father brought back many happy memories. Thank you.
I can't wait for episode 5 . Going to be a great one . I just started working with wood and I love this channel. I'm learning so much . Thank you guys for the knowledge that you are giving .
Tanner Cheek 5 is a good one!
Can't wait for it
Ngl I’m loving the food segments and your dad seems like such a top bloke. Thick skinned and up for a laugh.
Mate your videos are the best on youtube by a country mile, the style of getting straight into without american ten minute introductions is perfect, explanations at the end is a perfect vid set up, love the content too actually look forward to them coming up each time. Dad remains a legend too. Hats off fellas.
Anyone else get extremely hungry watching these vids? Excellent work, guys, once again!
Glad to see you dad in the episode, you should bring him back again.
You are one of very the few people that will never go crazy when there is no electricity and your i phone is useless.
Thank you for the video keep them coming GOOD JOB
Love seeing your dad back working with you guys. I'm really enjoying watching you do this build. Looking forward to the next episode.
i don't care how historically accurate it is, this is absolute awesome!
Someone may have already mentioned it but the drill you got for making peg holes... the handle section also makes the pegs to match... if you line up the hole and hammer down on peg stock it makes a perfect peg to go into hole... love this series.
I'm new but am definitely enjoying getting to know you guys. A big fan of TA Outdoors. Also the hoodies/design looks great.
Johnny Hayes Welcome to the channel!
14 minutes in and not one word uttered - brilliant! The video spoke for itself, the sound of a crackling fire and the chop of an axe were all that was needed. Loved it, great vid.
Great Series so far, keep up the good work. Can't wait to see how it comes out.
I don't think I've ever seen such a great comment section. You've some great people watching and that speaks volume about your content. Great people, great content, great audience. As above, so below.
Thanks! My subs really are awesome

I love seeing people taking their own life in their own hands and doing it for themselves well done
Loving this, the best series on The Tube at the moment.
I love how everyone is working knowone standing around each of you know what to do and do it. I wish more Americans had a drive like this !! These were the type of things I did as a child and still do today with my children now. They live and enjoy being out in the woods learning how to do just this!! Except they refer to them as clubhouses lol... You Men keep it up 💪 much love from Ohio U.S.A.
can’t get enough of your vids! even just the sounds are so entertaining!
Gracias...por tan especial vídeos acercarnos a lo antiguo a la supervivencia!! Gracias gracias
Having debarked a fair number of trees I would suggest flipping the draw knife over so that the flat back side is up facing you. It will make it a lot easier to take off the bark without damaging the wood.
Thank you for making good movies on RUclips all the time. from Japan🇯🇵
The weekend couldn't start much better than that - cheers guys 🙄
I found you channel by chance. I'm an old Woodsman and I hiked the Appalachian Trail in the United States with the great great grandson of Daniel Boone. Your videos bring back Boyhood memories and tears of joy. I miss the smells of the burning campfires and crackling of the fire smell of the cook pot. I enjoy your dog also there's just something about a campsite with a dog.
You are heading for the million, well done. Suggestion. Check out at around 20.05 on the video. There is a cracking shot or two that would make a superb photo. The sunlight coming through the trees behind your dad and Justin with the frame in the foreground you got to frame it and hang it on the wall. Love what you are doing keep it up.
Just so fantastic to see folks working with their hands!!!! Love it all the way from Minnesota, USA
I like all your shirts!

This is turning into a smashing project keep the work going on guys
I wouldn't expect you English Vikings not to pause during your work day for a spot of tea.
I'm having a great time watching your videos on this build.
No dog, but we got dad, so it's a win. :D
edit: Just as I say that, here comes Amber looking for crumbs. Glorious!
Remember the " Intermission " before we were inundated with ads on the television? This should be the modern version ! Great work guys !
Hitler Youth knife spotted!!!
This has been a great series so far and I'm excited to see the finished structure
WW2 was an inside job
The sound of wood being chopped and echoing throughout the woods is weirdly satisfying
21:05 Bugger me, I thought he is shifting with that auger, smoke is coming up the screw thread. But it was the smoke in the fire pit. well done, coming on nicely.
Eddy Lonergan haha power mode!!!
This is hilarious, in the middle of the woods and the Brits are frying food again. You guys are really cheering us up.
