When I first heard this song on the radio while driving, I had to pull over to listen to it. I was amazed hearing JImmy's fingers fly over the keyboard, Such a sensitively played, moving song -- a favorite!
on first glance, I thought this would be a recording from Django's sole US visit in 1946. Thought hits me this morning that if Django was brought over to play with Benny Goodman, in a setting like his sextet with Charlie Christian (Django's on-and-off quintet from 1940-47 was with clarinet), the US visit might have been a success. Instead, I'm pretty sure, Django was just asked to sit in as a rhythm player in a big band/orchestra (the traditional banjo role), so everyone was underwhelmed and Django went home a bit disgusted and disillusioned and lost some of his interest in playing/recording. Oh well. The Rosenberg Trio did a few good recordings and seeing as this recording dates from 2001, it may have given Lagrene the idea to do a version a year later with (I think) Jimmy Rosenberg in support.
Beethoven had no hearing, Van Gogh had no money to paint and Django's fingers were deformed in a fire... there's no free ride when it comes to creating beatiful things..,, BTW.... I like the original version of Django way better
