Am I the only who finds Del Monaco a rather crude singer? I mean impressive, it's obviously a massive voice and he is technically able to do everything he needs to, but there's not much nuance in the musicianship. Aside from the peerless technique, Callas is colouring every word here, miraculous. Del Monaco sounds rather blunt next to her!
Yes, he was always big-voiced, powerful early on. Exciting, no doubt. However, a very dry timbre, little color, no shading or tinting, none of that, just big singing. By 1960, he was less powerful, off-key every now and then, and a bit loud. By the early 60's very loud, flat quite a bit and by 1965, he just bellowed and hollered.
Possibly the greatest Aida ever recorded. IMO, Del Monaco's perfect diction constant column of breath, impetus phasing, interpretation and solid vocals, including B-flats towers over any other tenor in the third act of Aida. My dream would be to have Corelli sing the Celeste Aida and Del Monaco sing the rest of the opera. He was also better live.
Two greatest opera actors and two possibly greatest opera singers in their prime? This must have been insane in person, the electricity must have been super high at these performances. Who else can squeeze so much drama and passion out of music with such full powerful expressive voice. A masterpiece. Greatness personified.
Two huge, highly dramatic voices with personalities to match. Their high notes are absolutely imperious and they both hold them out forever...a thrilling performance that brilliantly fulfills all the demands of this great scene
What I love about this scene is how solid, beautiful and vocally healthy Callas’ pianissimos sound! And of course that duet became a competition of who has more volume and who is able to hold the high notes longer!
jmiller05 I worship this scene.. I first fell in love with this with the post 1960 Callas - Corelli studio recording and when I found out that there was this in Callas' Ultimate vocal prime with del Monaco!..

LohengrinTh The duets in Aida are everything, much more so than the individual arias (Celeste Aida and O Patria Mia are rather redundant to me). Although Ritorna Vincitor has one of the most beautiful cavatina sections ever wrote by Verdi.

Mario Del Monaco 1957 interview in English, Hartford 31January 1957. Del Monaco is asked at around 5.25. '' Is Callas a great singer"? There are 2 different things with Tebaldi & Callas. Tebaldi has a beautiful voice today, but Callas is something special, I never heard a singer like her before. I like very much Callas too." Is Callas inspirational to sing with? MDM, ''Yes, I sing very well with Callas. Tebaldi is a fine voice today, but not dramatic like Callas. Excuse me but I don't speak English very well.

A historic performance of Aida. Two absolute professionals who, in each other’s presence, raised the bar repeatedly and inspired the other to phenomenal heights.

Well Aida has never been my favourite opera and I always had second thoughts about Del Monaco but here Callas is more than sublime with a voice we later never heard at such degree of perfection .
you wont find better Aida than the early Callas ('50-'51)... what good is a beautiful voice when it cannot handle the almost destructive Dynamics of this role
Jean, Do your second thoughts about Del Monaco include perfect diction and as Lauri Volpi stated, "perhaps the best B-flats of any tenor" with endless breath
sugarbist Del Monaco was not consistently the most subtle tenor, and not as great an artist as Callas, but he knew what he was doing. Absolutely worth imitating, really.
@@tinibari456 No,subtlety was not a strong quality for Del Monaco, but no tenor before or after had the option to sing the way he did, including his expressions of rage and anger with endless breath impeccable diction and great B-Flats. He was a vocal phenomenon with a career lasting 35 years.
SacredTemplar8 Everyone did & in Mexico City the other singers asked Callas to blast her High E to drown Del Manoco. He was not happy with the outcome because the audience totally FREAK OUT IN VERY AUDIBLE APPLAUSE. Arnold Bourdon Amaral
Arnold Amaral LoL what are you talking about he’s gone on record multiple times saying that Callas was great and unique etc with no audible or visible shred of resentment or jealousy, and there many pictures, where they are together and they both are facing and smiling genuinely towards each other... Sure they had a bit of a healthy (for the most part at the very least) rivalry on stage but that’s it, zero hate on or off stage
Del Mónaco es un Vulcano de voz , timbre y emoción, pero escuchar al lado con Callas, con sus tres registros diferentes ,no es nada agradable, sería perfecto con Tebaldi.

I agree with you, MDM ...... a great voice, that one can not not admire, ..... but poor singing technique and, sometimes, even coarse
I agree..... appears to sing every role the same with little finesse, powerful instrument for all that...

I don't agree, perfect diction and tremendous high notes , impetus diction and heroic interpretation.

So heart-breaking. Callas brought so many different vocal colours to Aida that it transforms the entire role. I find most Aida's completely dead :)
