In one concert, Slash covered for Axl Rose when he hurt his hand on the mic. When he came out, he wanted to hurt Slash for saying the wrong thing. Also, he threw a violent mood swing at Slash in the studio during the Illusion tours. Prior to that, Axl delivered blows to Steven Adler's head for waking him up from a drunken state. There were other internal incidents as well. So I don't blame the group members for going their own ways in 1995, Rose is a hazard to deal with according to what I read.

Part of the reason why Slash left was because of Axl using other guitarists for the cover they did for a movie. They brought in Paul to replace Gilby and Slash was mad. Also, Paul also did some of Slash's parts on that cover too. Duff even recalls Slash saying, "it's either he goes or I go"

Slash's career was still quite successful even prior to him re-joining GNR. He had a double platinum album with Velvet Revolver, he played with everyone from Michael Jackson to Motorhead, appeared on lots of different worldly known t.v shows, his image was also plastered over Guitar Hero 3 which was the biggest selling video game from 07-08. Axl released Chinese Democracy, which kept having release delays all the while losing $13 million to make it, and it under sold what people were expecting (I personally like the album though), there was also more notorious incidents of him being hours late to concerts, and at the time dropping attendance from audiences to their shows. I'd say Slash had the better end of the stick in this time-frame. Its great they're back in the band together now.
