Every member of Suicidal was over qualified
That's what I was thinking. I know it's about guitarrists, but Robert Trujillo could be here too.
@@alvaropalacios4983 especially If you've seen behind the scenes footage with him and Metallica when he and James wrote All Nightmare Long
Cept mike lol
@@alvaropalacios4983 also Dave Lombardo and Eric Moore. I know, they're drummers, but still overqualified
Yup!
D Boon had more rhythm and melody in his toe than 99% of all guitarists combined. The guy’s strumming patterns were absolutely bananas. He could take an every day chord progression and make it sound entirely new and unique. It takes a rare talent to make something really complicated sound approachable.
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.
@@LageRUclips he cool too. Can’t touch d boons dancing though.
I think his style came from the same influence as Les Claypools. Both had flamenco techniques. Insane talent too.
I really love his approach to guitar playing it sounds unique yet still fits in with the punk genre
Him and Mike Watt were phenomenal
That sum 41 clip was so infuriating. The camera guys had no idea what was happening
He wasn't a fan.
Brown Sound’s solo in that song is so awesome and they didn’t even put the camera on him
dude 100% deserves to be the thumbnail of this video, apparently hes a super sweet dude too.
Europe doesn't appreciate black man playing the guitar
Punk Guitarists Being Overqualified for Their Jobs 14.11.22 1853pm hey!!! were all to overly qualified for this job... far tooo dad teach me this riff... anyhow; yeah............................................................ we love the jibe the discord the tight welcoming evanescence of, say. minor threat..... but shine a light when yer local guitar-johnny lets rip and trashes all that came before him... yeah.. we love rock n roll.
@@Killenmachine05 hes super chill. Ive run into him a few times. Were from the same area
What song is it?
Dave was a big reason I was into SUM 41 in high school. Dude is an incredible guitarist.
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.
^^^ reason i got into guitar
Yeah he's so badass and his solos are always cool from All Killer to Order in decline
And still not a f***ing shot of his solo in this video
That shit is lame and NOT punk.
El Hefe isn't just a great guitarist, he's also a multi-instrumentalist. He's awesome.
what's the name of the song in the clip?

He can sing, he can dance, he can act!
Billy Zoom (first guy) is one of the most talented musicians out there. Classically trained guy, that sort of thing. He just happens to play punk music for a living. Back in his younger days in X he would play the most intricate parts without even looking down to his guitar for the entire show. He just smiled super big while looking around the crowd as if he was part of the it and enjoying the show with everyone else. It was impressive
Great guitarist
I heard he was deathly sick - cancer…looks like he’s healthy
Shout out to the guys from A Wilhelmina Scream/Turnstile/Mute
Dave's playing fits Sum 41 perfectly since they have a massive metal influence in their sound and I fucking love it, though another player I'd put on here would be Chris Cheney from The Living End as the dude's solo on Prisoner of Society is on a whole other level of insanity and it's great
True, Chris should be on that list
Also the riff from Carry Me Home is insane
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.....
I agree Andreas, I've played heaps of living end solos back in the day living end rock
I get the feeling they were heavily influenced by 'tallica, am I wrong?
Lots of punk musicians are talented. Because one plays a certain style that doesn't mean it's all they can play. Sure some "punk" bands are just pop - Green Day comes to mind. But bands like Suicidal Tendencies or CircleJerks, etc., put a lot of effort and musicianship into their music.
My fav obscure music fact is that Thundercat was the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies for quite some time.
If you watch the video for Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal cover, you can see the bass player has a six-string. I felt dumb for presuming a lack of musical skill!
@@YelloWord Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Every local music scene is full of a bunch of kids with nicer gear than they know what to do with hahaha
There needs to be a sequel to this with Chris Hannah from Propagandhi, Jake Kiley and Rob Ramos from Strung Out, Chris Rest from Rich Kids on LSD and Lagwagon, Murray "The Cretin" Acton from Dayglo Abortions, Mike Ness from Social Distortion, Dr. Know from Bad Brains and Greg Ginn from Black Flag.
Hell yeah strung out is underrated Exhile in oblivion is one of the best albums I've heard from them.
@@somerandomguy4760 Exile in Oblivion is so GOATed. Easily one of the best punk albums I've ever heard.
@@gregthecoolnerd that and twisted my dad listened to them alot around 1999
Propagandhis drummer is incredible too my dad almost joined them til sulynn was chosen
@@somerandomguy4760 My brother was telling me that they tended to avoid playing some songs off 'Blackhawks Over Los Angeles' because they were too technical. I've always considered them one of the most metal punk bands.
I have Crohn’s disease and can almost crap on demand, does that make me overqualified to be in a GG Allin cover band???
That makes you absolutely perfect for a gg allin cover band
Respect 🤘
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝..
Probably still a little under qualified. Haha
I really like that you led the list with Billy Zoom, a rockabilly legend keeping X alive for almost 45 years.
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝.. 🔝.
Damn I didn't know x was around for that long I had never heard of them until I heard their song "Los Angeles" in GTA 5 lol
My dad and I have always said he’s almost too good to be playing punk. He’s totally overqualified for the genre and easily one of my favorite guitarists of all time. I love his rockabilly punk style, it’s had a huge influence on my guitar playing along with Johnny thunders who’s someone who could ONLY really play punk rock😂😂
That was the comment I had. Billy Zoom is one of the most talented and fully rounded musicians out there. He just happens to play Punk for a living.
@@JunkiescumBefore X, Billy Zoom was in (50s rockabilly pioneer) Gene Vincent’s backing band.
that propaghandi duo are unstoppable
From my home town.
Fat Mike gave them mad props on a podcast too.
I agree.. watch my propagandhi cover on my channel 🤘🏻
I don't know who Billy Zoom is, but that tone is killer, even though recorded on a phone. Never heard somebody rock so hard on a Gretsch.

Sulynn and Chris Hannah from Propagandhi both! Also Todd is a hell of a guitarist also, he wrote Night Letters :D

And don't forget the mighty beaver, David Guillas.
@@Franface31 Ah yes, of course, unbelievable musician him
Thank You for including Billy Zoom! As a Teen who was into Punk Rock Growing up in the 80s in Southern California Billy was the sadly overlooked linchpin for X .
I talked to Billy Zoom for 30 minutes when X played SF quite a few years ago, such a cool, cool guy! Pig Champion as well! RIP Tom
Sum 41 can tap into that metal sound now and then and I love it
If you tell me the song will I be disappointed when the rest of it isn't that thrashy
edit: Found it, what an alblum
@@noahflannigan6652Their song "The Bitter End" is pretty metal and the guitar solo on "Goddamn I'm Dead Again" is pretty impressive too
@@alwaysrecycles365 awesome ill give them all alisten
The Sums play plenty of metal shit. Many of their songs are like that.
The Bitter End is pretty kickass, but it doesn't totally stand out because the entire album Chuck is really, *really* good!
Also, the guitarist from Bad Brains has some REAL chops
Dr. Know has been the best guitar player on the punk and reggae scene for years, in my opinion 👌
For sure. If we're adding NYHC, then we need another episode. I'd add Parris Mayhew in the mix.
The live solo for T.S.O.L.'s 'Nothin' For You' is one of my all-time favorites.

Ron Emory is so underrated, so is Joe Wood. I love his era of TSOL
@@GregGallagher Hello Emo Dad, I am punk rock dad. Nice to meet you. Ron Emory is a great underrated punk guitarist and TSOL kicks ass!
@@punkrockdad86 hey there brother! I’m a punk rock dad myself too, but not THE punk rock dad! Nice to meet you!
Jeff Stinco from Simple Plan is a classical guitarist and plays pop punk, it's hilarious if you go to some of his IG videos and seeing him play classical music
I've always thought he was extremely talented
There's a couple Simple Plan songs where the main riffs are just beautiful harmonics. Addicted and Crazy come to mind.
@@MattPlaysBass25 Shut Up and probably Jump as well were the ones I can say when I think about Jeff guitar
D. Boon and Pig Champion are so underrated. Awesome to see them both here.
Congratulations 🎊 👏, you've been up for a one mystery box 🎁 🎁 from me, Thanks for watching
No Dr. Know?! Madness! Lol. Seriously he's an absolute legend, but this list is STILL damn solid regardless. Genre doesn't determine talent and this list is proof of that.
Dave "Brown Sound" Baksh is a great player. I'm so glad to see him on here
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.
I like how Suicidal Tendencies' guitarist is included, and also Rob Trujillo is right there playing bass
And he was still shite then too!
Have you ever heard the man play
Great list. I would Ian D'Sa from Billy Talent. All of his riffs are extra in the best way possible.
And Dr. Know from Bad Brains
Brownsound is actually perfectly qualified to be guitarist in the worlds most underrated thrash metal band!
If anyone thinks punk is an easy genre they are sadly mistaken. Fast aggressive music that demands absolute precision.
@Charlie Boudreau Exactly!! lol 🤣😂
@Charlie Boudreau listen to suicidal tendencies and DRI then change your statement
I mean, any deathcore song is gonna be miles harder than any punk song lol.
@Charlie Boudreau Suicidal is a punk band, only a few of their albums are crossover, and even that is hardcore punk adjacent.
I would say endurance. Lots of endurance and stamina.
Love for Punk Rock still going strong after 2 decades. Thanks to all of these guys.
"Institutionalized" guitar part is one of the best things I've ever heard in my entire life.
Get this man a Pepsi 😂🤘
It's fkin crazy
Dave is too good!
I didnot see Dave Baksh for a second in the clip

Ian D'sa has to be in there as well. One of the most original and unusual guitarists in the genre.

Finally! Someone said it!
Ernie C from Body Count

God bless the pentatonic scale
Good list, although I think Poison Ivy from The Cramps deserves a spot
Awesome to see Propaghandi get the cred they deserve. Only band I would add to the list is Agent Orange.

Billy zoom effortlessly playing that solo 👌😁
Jade Puget, Dr. Know and East Bay Ray send their regards.
Jesse Lacey and Vincent Acadi as well
You missed Captain Sensible from The Damned...talented, overlooked guy
I clicked on this hoping to see Captain too. I had a feeling he would not be included though. The Damned are always overlooked.
Sensible, ~and~ James. The thing that really set The Damned apart was that they were ALL good musicians, right from the get go. They all had chops and a large awareness of popular music.
Oh how I love this preconceived notion that musicians in punk bands have no talent.

If it wasn’t for the name tag I would’ve thought billy was Scotty Kilmer
How you gonna show Grant Estes and not Rocky George?
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝..
Don’t forget east bay ray as well ! And Bad Brains all of them
This subject and quite a few of these guys need a whole documentary
I like how they didn’t show Dave Brown Sound at all during his solo lol

He could take an every day chord progression and make it sound entirely new and unique. It takes a rare talent to make something really complicated sound approachable.
Fun fact: Suicidal tendencies are overqualified for metal
Huge Sum41 nerd here. I wish that band didnt just get wrote off as "that pop punk band that did in too deep and fat lip" seriously some badass guitar work, awesome pop punk choruses, and also full on metal albums. Did a deep dive on them about 2 years ago and have gotten so much more respect for that band. Highly recommend everyone gives their whole discography a deep dive
Congratulations 🎊 👏, you've been up for a one mystery box 🎁 🎁 from me, Thanks for watching
Stephen Egerton out there rocking the danny elfman look with the white tank top
For one reason maybe, this starts with X's axe soldier - stylistically Zoom was/is the epitome of Punk Rock and Roll cool. Listen to Wild Gift , Under the Big Black Sun or Ain't love Grand ( not to mention other classics by the group) and judge for yourselves. Please, do also praise the others, namely ST's Grant Estes around that early time. These guys could use a fretboard.
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝..
Whoever played guitar for The Exploited has been known to whip out a shred lick or two.
The guitarist for PULLEY too there's a live video of them playing beyond warped and he does a solo before cashed in
Jack O'Shea from Bayside, the guitarist from Belvedere, and the guitarist/vocalist from Ryan's Hope are probably the 3 greatest Punk guitarists of all time. Check them all out
We definitely disagree on those picks.
I'd also say Jake Kiley from Strung Out
Great list. But no Ritchie Stotts, Greg Ginn, Captain Sensible or East Bay Ray?
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.
I like how they never show the guy playing the solo in that Sum 41 footage 🙃
Just cuz punk isnt about technical instrumental abillity doesnt mean musicians in the genre are bad at playing. There are PLENTY of punk musicians who are really technical and awesome. Its a common misconception that punks cant play but it couldnt be further from the truth
These titles are so ridiculous. Why can't a good musician play punk? Loudwire is poser central
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.....
Billy Zoom always looks like he's showing off and I love that.
Brownsound fucking rips. Makes Sum 41 lethal.
Glad to see poison idea and pig champion getting some love!
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝🔝.
Did not expect to hear the name poison idea today
I feel Ian D'sa deserved an honourable mention, at the very least.
tbh i dont see anyone overqualified here. theyre all amazing musician choose to play punk music.
Sum41 could easily have been kirk hammet, sounded just like him
Somebody mentioned Dr. Know. I wanna mention Rocky George too, since ST was mentioned here.
El Hefe is a fucking beast of a musician
They didn’t even show brown sound doing the solo lol
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝.. 🔝...
Kenneth William from white lung... Craziest riffs you'll find anywhere
Chris Cheney from The Living End and Olga From The Toy Dolls !
Sulynn on the Classical Guitar was a nice touch.
cool to see robert quine on here he deserves the recognition
Steve Eggerton is the man
i can't believe you guys haven't put the toy dolls on that list !
Brian Baker and El Jefe are in this list....I approve..
So I’m really confused by this, is any guitarist that plays a decent solo overqualified to be in a punk band? I mean, it’s great that you shine a light at some underrated players, but we have to stop pretending that punk bands can’t play just because it’s inclusive. The difference is that punk is not as stuck up as metal, which is why metal is dependent on punk to evolve into something relevant. Every time there is an interesting evolution in metal, it happens because it borrows heavily from punk (nwobhm, thrash, death, black, glam/sleeze).
Lots of killer basslines in this video too
having brown sound as the thumbnail fits the bill TOO much for this title
👆👆👆Hello fan Thanks for your donation ❤️i have something for you🎁 🎁💬🔝.. 🔝.
Every member of Suicidal (like all 20 of the rotating members) was significantly over qualified for punk music. And half of their discography _thrash_ punk. They're speed machines. Hell Rob Trujillo is the most talented member of Metallica and he came from SxTx and Infectious Grooves (Funk Suicidal)
Meanwhile....the bass player for Black Flag using a bass with only 2 strings lol
I would add Warren Fitzgerald to the list.
I second this! Warren absolutely shreds!
2:49 oh yeah, early NY scene was fuckin' great. "Please Kill Me", great book, I recommend.

You gotta love how the clip is supposed to be of Dave Baksh shredding and they don't show him on camera even once.
No Lindsey mcdoogle from frenzal rhomb??? Guys fantastic!!!!
El Hefe is a badass. However, that footage had nothing to do with what he was playing.
Rob Ramos and Jake Kiley from Strung Out 🤙
This one was good.
So happy D. made the list.
Punk has some of the greatest riffs of all time
0:28 Fucking fire that camera man. Dave is out here shredding one of his best solos and they don't even give him a clear shot
I think there's this misconception that punk musicians have limited ability because punk bands are known for playing 3 - 4 chord songs and have a very raw sound.
Most punk guitarists have a far superior ability than they demonstrate in their respective bands because... Not everyone is a bloomin' show off!
Good call including Sulynn from Propagandhi in there. She's awesome. Chris Hannah is also an insane guitarist.
What’s the name of the Richard Hell song?

You can add the entire band in Strung Out
To be fair if these people play music onstage for a living, I would expect them to be great guitar players to begin with.
