    While I enjoyed the video, I personally thought you were setting a bad president for other flippers in your area. I get that you wanted to give the sellers a fair price, but in the long run it will cause sellers to ask more for their furniture. I'm also confused by youtubers having a wish list. I personally feel that if this is what you choose to do, you should be able to fund it yourselves. You stated that you traveled the world and I'm curious how many subscribers donating have been able to afford to do that. I'm honestly not trying to be mean or snarky, I'm just beyond curious.

      I appreciate you asking kindly, but I believe you have misunderstood all of this. I gave the lady a fair price because the $60 dresser belonged to her mother who had just passed. She had no idea what to ask for it. People like her are often taken advantage of by re-sellers. I told her I planned to resell it and wanted to give her an honest price. That's why I include the conversations. I hope giving people fair prices for their valuable items becomes the new standard. Have you ever been on the other end as the seller? They also deserve to benefit. It is not my place to set the "rules", I am simply sharing my story and what I feel is right for everyone involved. As far as the wishlist goes, I've donated my time and supplies towards projects that were donated for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Charity events, donated money from a project specifically for breast cancer awareness, and recently spent 2 days refinishing a family heirloom at no cost for a young family. I gave them my last wax brush and bottle of polish. The next day a new bottle of polish showed up from my wishlist, and a few days later new wax brushes. This isn't about me asking for a free $10 item. This is about giving to others and allowing others the opportunity to do the same. I have spent 17 yrs as a healthcare worker and have funded my own travels around the world. A wishlist isn't about taking advantage of others. I purchase items for other youtubers every week because it gives me pleasure to support others. We don't know how giving can impact others, beyond just the monetary value. I place a 5 second text in a 12 minute video that takes me 2 days to edit. Hope it wasn't an inconvenience. I appreciate your curiosity and hope I've answered your questions respectfully. Barry

      @@MadCityModern I've seen other resellers do exactly that. They let the seller know and give them more than their asking price. THAT is what will give resellers and flippers a better name. If someone is asking too much, they won't sell it and will have to lower their price, but some older people who have had pieces in their care for a long time have no idea what the market is. Reseller from Drew Prichard to George the Nomad antique seller, they know what things are worth and they're not in the business of taking advantage. You did good. That wasn't just some junk from Ikea.

    • @agomodern

      Since you are restoring it and selling it for only $400, $60 was a fair price for it. I can't afford to pay $200, haul and do all the cleaning, and staging for only a $200 profit. For me it's not a hobby, it is a livelihood. "Taking advantage" of someone is not paying their asking price. Nothing dishonest about that at all. I've had people basically steal pieces from me because they told the seller what it was worth and the sellers back out of the deal we already made. They've finally made an offer button where you can offer more than they are asking, so Facebook Marketplace has kind of remedied the problem, FINALLY.

    • @agomodern
      @agomodern 2 года назад +2

      @@TheAccidentalViking Funny you bring up Drew Prichard. he'll drive 400 miles, pay $400 for something, and then sell it for $500. Come on man, he's a millionaire from TV, so he isn't doing it as the only way of making a living. I'm really tired of so much snobbery online and blaming people as being cheap and inconsiderate just because someone pays a low asking price. I really don't know why I waste my breath answering such comments. On the other hand, I have seen Drew get them to come down on the price and him sell it for well over what he paid. Each case is different and not every transaction is done in the exact same way. Paying more or paying less does not make it in itself a good bad thing.

    In every episode of your channel, I learn something new or get reminded of something I'd forgotten. I don't know how I'd lost track of Howard's Restore-A-Finish...that stuff is magic on every wood surface where I've applied it so far. (I'm honestly busy these days adjusting to a still new retirement at age 63 plus other situations and haven't had the most time to enjoy any hobbies.) The older pieces of furniture where I've used the Howard's still retain their aged character and appear so clean and well taken care of even when the pieces had been abandoned and ignored and damaged on the surfaces. All of us viewers out here wish that we could be like you handling so many different restorations requiring countless methods of restoring...your learned knowledge bank is remarkable, plus your intuition proves to be so savvy. Thank you for bringing us all the differently themed videos...as they say, variety is the spice of life! You're a genuinely kind and friendly host. ...Keep on keeping on!

    I loved this so much I've watched it twice now and I'm gonna watch it again on the big telly hopefully tomorrow. Good man yourself Barry. That was a really excellent thing you did offering the lady a higher price. Not a lot of people would have done that. I wouldn't have been able to but I think it's just mighty that you were in a position to do that and then did. You have such a giving heart Barry and are always thinking of others. We need more of you on this planet and that's for sure. Aw man, the change in temperatures is crazy. We had gorgeous sunshine 17 celsius the week beginning 21st March. Carried into the following Tuesday. We were walking about in tshirts. We're now back to the onion method of dressing. -2 at night. Such a change. But we never get warm weather like that in March. Scared me a little. And now after all that, thoroughly enjoyed the video Barry. I love how straightforward it seemed anyway. No nasty surprises. But I can't take my eyes off your work for long enough to try and find any hiding dinosaurs. Good hiding places. Thank you for another great one. Hope all's well with you.

    What an elegant dresser! The clean lines of MCM furniture never disappoint, just as your videos never disappoint. You're a kind, decent soul to consider the true fair market value of a piece rather than to take advantage of a seller who is not experienced. That quality shows through in your work, and I daresay that it's the basis for 99% of the comments you receive. I'm quite surprised at how of these comments took you task about not going into a financial hole for your YT channel. You're not here as a 501c(3) charity and no one expects you to be. Absolutely beautiful dresser, this may be one of my favorite dressers that you have featured on your channel. I love the design of the drawer with the recessed handles!!! GREAT JOB as usual.

    Hi Barry. Once again an awesome video...and once again don't listen to the naysayers...giving people a fair price is the right thing to do!!! Keep up the great video's and always remember...that YOU are the one that goes to sleep at night knowing that you made someone else's day...AND getting a good nites sleep.

    Thanks for this. I love your work, but don't see myself ever undertaking all that you do. Or buying all that equipment. Or devoting all that space in my home to this pursuit. I suspect most of your viewers are similarly situated. Part of the fun of your videos is watching you torture yourself as you slog through all those dark nooks and crannies and always come out victorious. However, this simpler video was very useful in ways that some others are not. I have often wondered about how to streamline some of your exacting work to better suit my lazy ass and I appreciate getting your recommendations on the matter. Bravo, Barry. Take a bow!

    Stanley. First thing that came to mind when you showed the dresser. NIce to see a video where a piece is only cleaned and not completely stripped and refinished. I see that way too often on RUclips when it's rarely necessary.
