- In this video I will share several easy steps to Refresh your old furniture or prepare furniture to flip for a profit. Furniture Restorations are fun, but sometimes, old furniture just needs to be cleaned up and refreshed using a few simple products. I will use Howard Restore a Finish to restore the original luster on this walnut dresser. I will then apply Howard Feed N Wax Wood Polish and Conditioner to bring this piece to life and add and extra layer of protection. I will share several ways to prepare furniture to flip for a profit and How to make money flipping thrift store Furniture. I have included a few vintage toy trains just for fun. Hope you enjoy this one! Barry

While I enjoyed the video, I personally thought you were setting a bad president for other flippers in your area. I get that you wanted to give the sellers a fair price, but in the long run it will cause sellers to ask more for their furniture. I'm also confused by youtubers having a wish list. I personally feel that if this is what you choose to do, you should be able to fund it yourselves. You stated that you traveled the world and I'm curious how many subscribers donating have been able to afford to do that. I'm honestly not trying to be mean or snarky, I'm just beyond curious.
I appreciate you asking kindly, but I believe you have misunderstood all of this. I gave the lady a fair price because the $60 dresser belonged to her mother who had just passed. She had no idea what to ask for it. People like her are often taken advantage of by re-sellers. I told her I planned to resell it and wanted to give her an honest price. That's why I include the conversations. I hope giving people fair prices for their valuable items becomes the new standard. Have you ever been on the other end as the seller? They also deserve to benefit. It is not my place to set the "rules", I am simply sharing my story and what I feel is right for everyone involved. As far as the wishlist goes, I've donated my time and supplies towards projects that were donated for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Charity events, donated money from a project specifically for breast cancer awareness, and recently spent 2 days refinishing a family heirloom at no cost for a young family. I gave them my last wax brush and bottle of polish. The next day a new bottle of polish showed up from my wishlist, and a few days later new wax brushes. This isn't about me asking for a free $10 item. This is about giving to others and allowing others the opportunity to do the same. I have spent 17 yrs as a healthcare worker and have funded my own travels around the world. A wishlist isn't about taking advantage of others. I purchase items for other youtubers every week because it gives me pleasure to support others. We don't know how giving can impact others, beyond just the monetary value. I place a 5 second text in a 12 minute video that takes me 2 days to edit. Hope it wasn't an inconvenience. I appreciate your curiosity and hope I've answered your questions respectfully. Barry
@@MadCityModern I've seen other resellers do exactly that. They let the seller know and give them more than their asking price. THAT is what will give resellers and flippers a better name. If someone is asking too much, they won't sell it and will have to lower their price, but some older people who have had pieces in their care for a long time have no idea what the market is. Reseller from Drew Prichard to George the Nomad antique seller, they know what things are worth and they're not in the business of taking advantage. You did good. That wasn't just some junk from Ikea.
@@MadCityModern well said. This is the heart of those of us who are health care workers.
Since you are restoring it and selling it for only $400, $60 was a fair price for it. I can't afford to pay $200, haul and do all the cleaning, and staging for only a $200 profit. For me it's not a hobby, it is a livelihood. "Taking advantage" of someone is not paying their asking price. Nothing dishonest about that at all. I've had people basically steal pieces from me because they told the seller what it was worth and the sellers back out of the deal we already made. They've finally made an offer button where you can offer more than they are asking, so Facebook Marketplace has kind of remedied the problem, FINALLY.
@@TheAccidentalViking Funny you bring up Drew Prichard. he'll drive 400 miles, pay $400 for something, and then sell it for $500. Come on man, he's a millionaire from TV, so he isn't doing it as the only way of making a living. I'm really tired of so much snobbery online and blaming people as being cheap and inconsiderate just because someone pays a low asking price. I really don't know why I waste my breath answering such comments. On the other hand, I have seen Drew get them to come down on the price and him sell it for well over what he paid. Each case is different and not every transaction is done in the exact same way. Paying more or paying less does not make it in itself a good bad thing.
The little extras in your videos, your style, your production values, and the end results - all of it, so good.
I really appreciate this
I also find them very ZEN. hmmmmmmmmmmm
I agree
Thanks! I thought Norway so I was way off. The dinosaur is a treasure! Love the tips, I’ve been avoiding good pieces because I obviously don’t want to paint them. But I can see now that a good refresh and quick flip is beneficial to everyone especially the piece. That buyer was lucky you found him!
That's a great guess. I will be sharing Norway footage eventually
@@MadCityModern I lived in Oslo for a year so I’ll be looking forward to seeing familiar stuff, did you visit Vigeland? That’s my favourite place in winter.
I was thinking China! Since I live in Alberta and love Waterton Park - which adjoins Glacier Park - I'm embarrassed! Just a little. 😉
In every episode of your channel, I learn something new or get reminded of something I'd forgotten. I don't know how I'd lost track of Howard's Restore-A-Finish...that stuff is magic on every wood surface where I've applied it so far. (I'm honestly busy these days adjusting to a still new retirement at age 63 plus other situations and haven't had the most time to enjoy any hobbies.) The older pieces of furniture where I've used the Howard's still retain their aged character and appear so clean and well taken care of even when the pieces had been abandoned and ignored and damaged on the surfaces. All of us viewers out here wish that we could be like you handling so many different restorations requiring countless methods of restoring...your learned knowledge bank is remarkable, plus your intuition proves to be so savvy. Thank you for bringing us all the differently themed videos...as they say, variety is the spice of life! You're a genuinely kind and friendly host. ...Keep on keeping on!
Love this! Barry
To heck with the negative comments. I LOVE your videos. I can’t get enough of them. They’re very informative and you’re very entertaining. As well as considerate and thoughtful. Please keep them coming!
Thank you for the support Catherine
I guessed it!! I ACTUALLY GUESSED CORRECTLY!!
Thank you, Thank you, to imaginary standing ovation from imaginary audience!!! That is a beautiful piece. And you restored it wonderfully!!❤
I smiled when you first guessed it : )
Barry, you are kind, honest and fair, plus you do great work.
Thank you Rosalie
Barry is such a good man. He deserves lots of brass and bronze animals.
Thank you
Loved this format; it made a nice change. Interesting and informative. I love watching you refinish/restore furniture but these occasional changes of pace keep your channel fresh and interesting. Sorry, I keep forgetting to look for the dinosaur though, because I'm too busy watching what you're doing and I don't notice the background 🤷♀️
That's ok : ) I may have added too much in this video.
Me too! I am always delighted to see one of Barry’s videos. I will admit though for me the longer the better. You are an artist Barry. You have grown so much since I first started watching. We bought our furniture in 1974 so all your repairs are very applicable to me. Thanks so much for the enjoyment. Stay safe.
@Deb Smith lol I missed some of his video cos I was looking for the pesky T-Rex !! 😂
Please continue your beautiful work . Don’t stop doing what you do best . There always going to be negative people. You have always brought joy in watching your videos
This is special. Thank you Rosa
Love the dresser I've always wondered if the refinisher was worth using. Thanks for sowing such a beautiful piece, but THAT CHAIR!!!! I about fell out of my chair when I saw it. I am in love and that's the truth. Please show the chair again.
I've shown a few of these chairs : )
Right before you said the location, I recalled walking this exact trail. It’s so lovely! Thanks for a great video!!
This is the response I was hoping to see. That's why I shared it, to help others reflect as well. Thank you
Barry,
The walnut came out gorgeous. I didnt realize you had the mirror as well. Beautiful and unique piece.
Was so happy this one didn't need much
I just discovered your 2 channels, and have been watching your videos back-to-back. Your skills are impressive, and your curiosity about the provenance of a piece strikes a chord with me. I live near Madison, so it is a source of pride to know an artisan such as you is making videos so close to home. Keep up the good work.
Wow, thank you! Welcome to the channel.
Barry
you are too funny with your dinasaur! Loved the refresh! Admire you giving a fair price too 👍😀
Thank you Julie
Hope Everyone enjoyed something different this time! Thank you for watching. Barry
Love the drawer pull "holes" on this beautiful dresser!
Me too
Stanley. First thing that came to mind when you showed the dresser. NIce to see a video where a piece is only cleaned and not completely stripped and refinished. I see that way too often on RUclips when it's rarely necessary.
I've been enjoying our conversations. No hard feelings. I always enjoy discussing some of the fine details involved. Thanks for always being respectful with your approach. Barry
This was so enjoyable to watch, Barry.
Thank you : )
I knew it was Glacier NP! My favorite place. I liked learning this easy refresh type restoration.
So happy you guessed it
It’s incredible how much a little elbow grease makes a difference in the beautiful piece.
I agree: )
I really enjoyed this video! I’ve been itching to find a project that just needs some restore a finish - it looks like great stuff!
Thank you
I have no old furniture to refresh nor do I plan on flipping any in the future but this video was still so informative and nice to watch! I also liked catching the Brazilian reais coins in your box!
You saw the coins : )
The dresser is very pretty. However, that trail you were showing.........you would never bump into me up there. If you did, you would know I finally lost my mind.😊
Best comment yet!
@@MadCityModern I am leaving in the morning on a cruise for 12 nights, so hope you won't be lost without my crazy comments.
Loved this format... wonderful work as always... thankyou for not ripping off the seller of the piece ..👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for mentioning this : ) I appreciate it. Barry
Always learn something when I watch them. You do a great job
Thank you Kim
I guessed correctly on the furniture maker. My experience is paying off.
Awesome. This one stumped me!
Beautiful piece of furniture. Awesome video.
Thank you Sergio
Hi Barry. Once again an awesome video...and once again don't listen to the naysayers...giving people a fair price is the right thing to do!!! Keep up the great video's and always remember...that YOU are the one that goes to sleep at night knowing that you made someone else's day...AND getting a good nites sleep.
Thank you for the encouragement
Teehee!! Great job as usual!! I got 2/3 for the dinosaur lol......thank you Barry!!
That's impressive since the 3rd was blurry anyways
I kept rewinding lol...to make sure I actually saw it....
Love all the vintage stuff around you shop as well as the furniture and beautiful scenic pictures/videos!
Thanks Julie. Barry
Great job. I love the brass collection you have. I have several myself.
Awesome! Thank you!
Barry
Love this piece!
Great video as always... I saw the dinosaur zero times & was way off on location, but I got the maker right. love the magnetic wrist band.
The wristband was an amazing gift
Liked the basic and very helpful tips on this refresh! I need one knob exactly like the ones on this dresser for a hutch I have, that is a very similar style.. Glad to know this is United, mine is not marked, but knowing this might make it a little easier sourcing one. Always enjoy your videos! Thank you! - Joey
Hoping those knobs aren't difficult to find
Barry, I wish you would sell those MCM chairs to me!! The yellow one and the turquoise one...I love them so much. I hope one day I can find same ones in any color, I wouldn't care cuz I love them so much! I love your work tremendously too! You have an awesome gift, sir!
I think those are the few items I may never sell : )
Great video and lovely piece. Thank you!
Thank you Cyndi
I grew up near Glacier, so I knew that one right away, but the dinosaur was tricky. I only found him once, but I can now attest that there are zero dinosaurs in Jack Rhodes' latest video! I think I will have my dinosaur eyes on for the rest of the evening.
Glacier is one of those places I wish to visit again. So much to see. I'm sure you have so many amazing memories. Thank you Molly!
Dear Barry, I am Bea from Budapest, Hungary. I just want to say hello, and I have no idea why you don't have your own Netflix show yet. Your projects and channel is amazing. Have a nice week!
Hello Bea. Thank you for the support from Budapest! Barry
Ah, so relaxing to watch🌻💕. Enjoyed it as always 💕 🌻
Love your channel 🌻🌻🌻
Hi Rochelle!

Il est magnifique et heureuse qu’il soit resté intact 😊
Thank you Isabelle
Beautiful work!!
Thank you Sandy
I have really enjoyed your videos. Your voice is soothing
Thank you so much 🙂
Good video. I didn't see any of the dinos. I did guess right on the maker of piece. Keep them coming so relaxing to watch you work.
You guessed it!
Lovely 🥰 I always find needles in old desk and sometimes old chairs that I redo. Too bad I was wrong guessing the brand of this piece. I’ve never heard of that brand. Keep the videos coming!
I had not seen it until this piece. So glad you guessed though
Thank you for this restoration video. It was interesting to see the piece come to life 👍
Thanks Laurel
Gorgeous!
Thank you Nancy
@@MadCityModern I have done a few pieces. Not varnish, just paint as art pieces. I like learning what you use to restore. I have a mid-century side table with 2 drawers; really bad shape. I love the look. Can't get the design or quality anymore. Where to begin? I will watch you more. Thank you
Beautiful piece Barry. But that chair next to it with that chartreuse fabric is awesome!! I’d grab that baby in a minute!! Hope all is well Daniel.
Thank you Daniel
Barry, great video content as ever, thank you. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy having a cup of coffee and watching. Your approach to the seller was very honest and I am sure that she appreciated that and I bet you she is telling all of her friends as I am sure she did not expect you to pay more than she had it on for when most people try for a discount. All the best
This feedback is incredible. Thank you for always supporting me and the channel. Barry
I was going to guess Peru, so far off! Haha. Beautiful refresh!
That's a great guess. I'll be sharing Peru footage at some point. Assuming you've been?
Very helpful, thanks for sharing!
Love your channel. Subbed today!
Beautiful
Thank you
¡Qué belleza! Es un gran trabajo.
Beautiful job as always...great job sir
Thank you Randy
@@MadCityModern your attention to detail is wonderful...I have refinished wood for years and I have never seen someone so attentive to detail...
I'm a fan of your work, I dream of having a workshop like yours and maybe half of your knowledge...... I noticed that you have two coins from my country, I found it interesting. Oh, I'm from Brazil.
Wow! Awesome. So glad you saw the coins. Barry
I want to clarify that I fully acknowledge that I am not a maker, so what I am saying could be completely wrong. But I think it would be really cool if you learned how to do plating for some of the pieces like in this project. I've seen it done on a couple other channels and it looks very doable for you Barry. And I think that it would give that amazing final touch to your projects. Keep up the good work!
Love this. I hope to learn this skill
Nice work!
Thank you
Great video !
Thank you
Es un buen mueble y lo has arreglago muy bien 👌👍🇪🇸🌿
Thank you Ernesto
Thanks for another great learning opportunity, Barry. I've never been to Glacier, but I live close enough that I have added it to the list. You're a very talented man with many obvious loves. Your channel is inspiring and the results speak for themselves. As for those who want to question your motivation, let them eat cake my friend. Most of us look forward to your next video with great anticipation. Keep up the great work. Until next time......
This is so encouraging. Thank you Tom! Barry
Fantastic restoration Barry😊 i was guessing Thailand so very surprised when Montana was revealed 😁
I've been to Thailand : )
Enjoy all your videos
Thank you. Barry
Stunning as always such beautiful work.
Thanks Rhonda
Amazing what some cleaning and polishing will do for a piece of old furniture. Whoever had that before you took good care of it. Maybe one of these days you’ll find a real diamond in a drawer. 😉 that chair at the end, my mother in law had two of those in her beauty shop in the sixties. They ended up in my mother’s house as temp seating while she was shopping for new chairs . Don’t know what became of them after that.
They definitely took good care of it
Heyyy, Barry❣️❤️from Michigan
Hi Gayle!
I'm so surprised about the trail video. I've been to Glacier Park many, many times and still didn't recognize it. The whole park is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Love that you shared this! This trail did not disappoint
At the end of the trail is a shopping mall, lol. It’s got to be an old ruin city. Maybe even Machu Picchu
A shopping mall would have been a genius idea. I missed the opportunity
This was a lovely piece and u really respected it. I love that u even kept the original hardware. Im getting so tired of watching these people take lovely vintage or retro pieces and paint them and change the hardware when they could have restored them. I have a 1964 modern bedroom suite my mom bought and I inherited it. I love it and my mom took very good care of it. Its solid wood, very well made and I would never disrespect it by painting it or changing the unique brass hardware. Really enjoy your channel. ;)
Thank you for sharing your story, and for the kind comments.
Barry
The trail is in the Bugaboos, British Columbia, Canada. I never once spotted the dinosaur! I was gazing in the foreground too much.
Never been : )
Love the video! I live in N. IL/S. WI area and follow another guy in Minnesota who does furniture videos as well. Maybe you have already made a video like this but I would love to see someone do a restoration on Audio equipment such as speakers or those wood/veneer cabinets surrounding a turntable. Been to Madison many times and not sure if you have heard of Wise Owl Auctions but they sometimes have some cool furniture as part of their sales. Thanks again!
Great idea! Thank you, Steven.
Barry
I had to rewind and hear him say “Chicago” with a midwestern accent again 😊
LOL. Thank you for watching,
Barry
My favorite you tuber!>
Wow! Thank you. Just made my day. Barry
What a beauty! It will be hard to part with I'm sure.
Yes
Ok, I'm not to the end, but I 'think' the dinosaur was at 3:15, 4:27 and 6:35. Probably completely wrong, but I did enjoy the beautiful piece of furniture and your beautiful work! Now, let me go see this to the end. 🙂👍
I'm really impressed Holly
He's on the black cabinertby where you were working on the mirror.
Good catch!
It’s Wonderful of you to pay More! And Great that you didn’t need to start from scratch!
However, I think you cheated with the Dinosaur. Even when you pointed him out, I couldn’t see him👀 😆
This made me laugh
Just checking on your well being...its been a while since you posted a video, with drawls are setting in...
Getting ready to post this weekend : )
Is the chair discussed in another video? It's so cool.
I showed them in one of my first videos, but I plan to share them again
The dinosaur was so hard to find lol
LOL.
The video is great, as usual. But what I want to know is where can I buy a dinosaur like yours? I love it!!
Look for brass dinosaur on Etsy : ) mine came from China but is vintage brass. Crazy, right? Not cheap though
@@MadCityModern Thanks, I will. I love dinos
wow....that discussion got a little awkward (paying more than the seller was asking). I was going to ask if you were in the healthcare field in one of your videos I watched but thought "no I would be embarrassed if you weren't and you thought it was stupid that I asked". I'm a dialysis RN who just quit my job because of the physical and mentally stressful environment I was working in. I have always enjoyed working with furniture and decided I would rather work hard for myself rather than work hard to make the biggest dialysis corporation in the word richer. I have no illusions that furniture flipping is going to be enough to support me but for the near future I'm going to give it my best shot. Anyway thanks for your content, you can make the videos as lengthy as you want and thanks for sharing about getting overwhelmed with how long it takes to strip and sand a piece of furniture and your helpful advise about breaking it down into sections.
This was a very kind message. Thank you for watching and commenting. I wish you well in your business, and thank you for serving in the healthcare field.
Barry
I appreciate the grass shot. I didn't see much growth. But, what can ya do? 😉
Well said : )
If you used wood filler for that corner, would it be harder to match the finish?
From the thumbnail I thought you were gonna show how to refinish the green chair too haha
I'll be showing the chairs soon
Hi from summerside pei
Hello Judy
When u was hammering the back of it was the Dino on the shelf behind it beside the old looking light?! Didn't catch the other 2 times. Maybe not even that time. 🤭
Oh yea!! I found one of them.
Once!
You do know the trick for cleaning glass/mirrors with newspaper? If you can find any, lol. You spray on your cleaner and use a wadded up piece of newspaper just like a paper towel to clean it with.
Yes : ) I'm always happy to get ads in the mail. The paper cleans the glass so well. Great feedback
Only managed to find 2 of the 3 🦖 in the video @4:21 @6:13
Impressed !
Have you ever tried MAAS metal polish?

Found it : )
And here is the presence of Brazil in the video: R$1.50 in the form of a R$1.00 coin and a R$0.50 coin!
That's right! So glad you caught that
Ooh Stanley. Sneaky handles. I just found a match for this one sold at auction May 2018 on Lot Art, called "mid century double drawer by United furniture" without the mirror and with a shiny top!
Sorry you might have said but is this walnut?
I don't think I said it was walnut, but I believe it is. I can't believe you found a comp
