Great review, I had north face jester used for 10yrs finally broke zipper the best work bag I’ve ever used. I’m sold on this review showing what you stored was very helpful. Thanks
I have the overhaul 40. My 9th grader used it through a full year now I’m taking it to work. Nylon still strong ykk zips shoulder straps still beautiful can’t be north face
I had Jansport during grade school and Northfaces during high school and my college years. Northface makes some of the best quality packs. Never had issues with any of them. I still have my hotshot from 20ys ago.
I have a Surge II from 2013 or 2014 that I still use to this day. I used it through 2 years of high school and all 4 years of college! I've taken it with me across the country for traveling and it has treated me so well. I recently just picked up the Aer x Ministry of Supply Lunar Pack as a EDC/short travel pack so hopefully I like it as much as I've loved my North Face!
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with the surge! Glad to hear it worked well for you and hope you enjoy the lunar pack as much as I have :)
I have one from 2008, used all the way from middle school to college and after! It has a little rip since I often grab it by the big and small compartments rather than the handle and I had to install replacement zipper pulls, but it still works.
I have an older North Face Surge. I beat the crap out of it. I have used it for day hikes in the woods. I have overstuffed it with 3 days of clothing and laptop and a pair of sneakers for business trips on airplaines (I have always been able to fit it in the overhead even when overstuffed). I use this pack all the time. It is bulletproof. I cannot make it fail. The only failures on this have been the little stretchy attachment loops on the front of the carry straps...they have long since lost their stretch. I love how easily it carries my laptop and on the bottom zip pocket I carry the charger and mouse and such. It easily holds two water bottles in the side pockets. The "admin" pocket up front is awesome design. Holds business cards, pens, airline tickets, passport, iphone chargers, emergency kit, snacks, etc, etc, etc. The zippers are flawless still. I have never had to lubricate them. I love that a small pack like this has a decent waist belt and a sternum belt. I have run through the airport MANY times with this thing snug to my body and nothing flapping around. When I travel for a couple days I purposely try to pack only what I need so that I can get it all into this bag! It has become an old friend by now. During hunting season I empty it out and stuff it full of my stuff I need for deer hunting. I take it to the beach all the time to carry my plastic containers of fishing gear and tools needed for surf fishing. This pack has never ever failed me and I treat it rough. Occasionally I wipe it down with a wet cloth. Occasionally I spray waterproofing spray on it. My good friend Stan gave me this pack as a surprise present once so many moons ago so I have no idea what it cost. He has one just like it and he still uses his every day too. Don't even think twice. The North Face Surge is great. I would hate to have to go buy a new one but I doubt I will have to. This is heirloom quality and it will outlive me I am pretty sure of it.
I have the Borealis but I find the organiser pocket sits too high and changes the bags centre of gravity making it too heavy. This is better that the pockets are lower on the bag.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with the Borealis! And that’s a good point, I really like the distribution of the pockets on this one!:)
Looks a great bag ...one thing that was a major problem with the previous Surge was the shoulder straps in relation to breaking from the main body of the bag ... the latest straps look completely different even compared to all previous Surge bags... shame you didn't mention the shoulder straps or rather the connection point at the top
Thank you for watching and that’s a good point! I haven’t used the older surge, but I’ve heard similar comments between the old and new versions of the Borealis and it seems like people have mentioned this new system is a little better
@@dannypacks Apart from my own experience with the previous Surge (2019/20).. I read many had the same issue with it and the similar Router via the reviews on TNF's own site . I hope this one's far better than the previous one .👍
I just got this bag yesterday on sale for $89 in a sky blue color .. personally I loved the color it drew me to the bag then I saw all the organization and fell in love. I couldn't leave it there for that price. Can't wait to start using it ❤️
Man, I had my old Surge stolen on my last trip. And this new one ist worse in my opinion. I prefer the one before this one. Hope I can find a shop that still has it..
For me the straps are just fine. I don't like to be smothered in a huge amount of cusion padding anyway. They are attached to the bag far better than the previous version that had the useless little bits of webbing that ( according to disgruntled users ) had a tendancy to rip out of the bag.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with the bag! That’s great to what these straps have worked well for you, although I prefer the style I had on the borealis I agree these are still pretty comfortable overall!
I am between this and recon backpack I wish this version would have smaller 28L and strap would be better. This is what I need for a everyday pack :( thanks for the video
Thank you for watching and I’m glad the video was helpful! Although both are good options and I agree a smaller version of the surge would be awesome, overall I prefer the additional organization and laptop protection on the surge
Nice backpack and review! I am looking to upgrade a very old, but excellent TNF backpack that has a shoe compartment. Do any of the newer backpacks offer that feature? Also, do any of their backpacks have the slip to put it on a rolling suitcase bag handle?
Just got this ... not used it yet ... ive had every edition of the surge apart from the 1st .and the previous to this edition (4th or 5th ?) Strap broke . I got the patagonia blackhole32 as a replacement until the next Surge was brought out . The Patagonia is still my main everyday backpack . Thing i prefer about the Surge tho is its far superior internal organisation to patagona blachole32, it also seems bigger internal storage wise . The patagonia is quite basic and sparse inside. Tho the bottom of the patagonia doesnt rub against my lower back as the surge does ..i do wish theyd sort that.. the rigid bottom of surge bacpoack rubs or rather digsinto my back ... Another thing but not major the waterproofness of the patagonia . I still prefer the surge ... if only there was a perfect blend of both those backpacks ... .btw the waist straps on the surge are pointless ... i usually cut the things off . Im put off by the new surges straps at the front and bottom of the bag , what's the need for that ???? Thankfully theyve sorted the shoulder straps out , as the last edition imo the worst surge broke after a couple of months ... ive noticed with every edition of surge they brought some new amazing innovations and then take others from previous Surges away ..one day theyll perfect it ... Also in europe we get 1 colour ..black lol... tho i do believe there were 2 other colours but very limited stocks, which is a first with this edition..hopefully we get the same colour combos as in north america . Ithink the main reason ive not yet used the northface Surge over the Patagonia Blackhole ... is due to the fact is that the rigid bottom of the bag rubs against my lower back , the pataginia is comfirtable in that regards . Its a shame the Patagonias internal storage is not very good , and sparse ... a thing the surge is perfect at . Great channel
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with the bags! I’m definitely a fan of both this and the Patagonia and finback and forth on whether I prefer the simple layout or the additional organizational options
This is a great backpack. The negative points I find are the followings: If one packs the other pockets, the main compartment will be too small and so hard to pack in clothes for example. It is also a bit much to have 3 slots for tablets or notebook. This also eats up much space.
Thank you for watching and I’m glad the video was helpful! Although both are good I prefer the surge as it has a false bottom and just feels a little more protective overall
I have a Surge that's a couple of years older than this version. My question is about the FlexVent back. In your video it doesn't look curved. In my Surge there is a noticeable curve in the direction of the laptop compartment. So my worry is, doesn't that add extra pressure on the laptop? Were all the Surges from around 2019 like that, or is there something wrong with mine?
I have the Surge and Borealis 2022's, have been travelling extensively with them and can tell you this, the Surge is absolute crap as the straps are too stiff and dig into you even with light loads, I would absolutely avoid it. The Borealis' straps are super, better than the old Borealis which is amazing, however the bag has this annoying top heavy (even when empty) front top pocket, that will always make it drop down. In my opinion go with the Borealis (don't know the Recon so cannot comment) but beware the high centre of gravity, I will try and post this on most Surge videos to warn people about how crap the straps are, a lot of the review videos say it is OK, it absolutely is not!
Thank you for watching and that’s great to hear you’ve had good experiences with north face bags! I agree their quality to price / features is really good and I’ll have to see if i can check out the router transit in the future!:)
Thank you for watching! I didn’t notice this issue but I’m guessing it might depend on your height and how you typically wear your bags (higher up vs low)
Thank you for watching! Both are really solid options, I might lean towards the surge as I find it a bit more comfortable and it has a better laptop compartment
Thank you for watching! The bag can handle light to medium rain pretty well but I think heavier rain would start to seep in especially if you for a longer time in the rain
Thank you for watching! I haven’t had a chance to try the recon or vault yet so I can only offer my thoughts based on their site descriptions, they all look really solid and I was surprised how similar the recon and surge seem in particular, the surge appears to have a few extra pockets on the front vs the stretchy pocket that the recon has so that may be the deciding factor and the vault seems like a more streamlined option of the two with slightly less compartments so might be good if you prefer something a little simpler :)
Great review! But the waist belt is fabulous if ur cycling or hiking. Many times while hiking I've had to run and the waist belt stabilizes the pack awesomely. Besides, u don't have to remove them. All u have to do is fold them neatly and use a rubber band to keep them tight and neat.

The womens backpack has a shorter back thing than the mens backpacks because its made for smaller torsos.
