The steel pan steel is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. It is the only acoustic
instrument invented in the 20th century. The steel pan owes its genesis to the carnival
festivals of that era. It emerged as the product of the energy of the people directed towards
cultural self-expression.
After years of strenuous diplomatic efforts by Trinidad and Tobago, the United Nations has declared August 11 as World Steelpan Day. This Official confirmation of the global embrace of the steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago is a colossal victory for our country.
Trinidad and Tobago, is the birthplace and cradle of the Steelpan, an instrument birthed in struggle and determination for self-expression.
In celebration of this momentous development, the Consulate General, with the support of Sesame Flyers International Inc, is presenting Pan in Times Square, on Friday August 11, 2023, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Times Square is the most visited spot on earth and perfect for letting the world know what steelpan means to Trinidad and Tobago and the world community of pannists.
The event will feature a performance by a nine by a nine-piece ensemble, led by the inimitable Dane Gulston. Some of the most skilled and infectious steelpan players to be found anywhere in the world.
Some of the Caribbean’s greatest friends in Office in the State of New York will be on hand to witness the historic event.

If asked, I hope they could talk about the instruments. I also hope they demonstrate the range of the instruments by playing something other than calypso.

Please don't be a clown stop y'all foolishness. - Everyone in that sea of RED knows exactly what they are playing, each and every song. As for them not playing popular or more modern tunes. Popular to whom ? - Everyone in that crowd knows these tunes and are popular to them, they also played new songs from 2023, One last thing, - These artistes are there, to promote their culture, which is "Soca, Calypso, Pan" why do you want them to play anythi8ng else but ? or promote that which is not Trini. ? - Y'all don't ever ask a Reggae artists to do different music, but, reggae. Nor do you expect an R&B-Pop artist to perform Country music. So stop the hate , appreciate, and learn of and from the culture. -Peace

It's not the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century, though. The folk harp, the bowed psaltery, and the low whistle all were, too.
Where do you people get your stupidity and , or biases from ? . . is it inherited or cultivated.? Listen up - The Harp and Psaltery are ancient instruments, especially the Harp, an instrument found in the Bible being played by David. Defining a "Folk Harp" is silly, a harp is a harp, regardless of size, . Levered harps come in a variety of sizes, - knee harps and floor harps. And as for The Psaltery, It is over 7,000 years old , Originating in Mesopotamia. It does not become a new invention or instrument, because of the manner in which it's played. The Psaltery can be played by being, struck, plucked or bowed, with, being plucked the most popular. So the statement that the "Steelpan" is the only *_Percussive Idiophone Instrument_* invented in the 20th Century, is a true statement. Just setting the record straight for *PAN* -Peace
