she actually learned her lesson with Lover. Ever since Folklore her single choices were amazing. Cardigan, Willow, Anti-Hero, Lavender Haze, Karma, Is It Over Now? and Fortnight were all pretty good choices. Yes, even Fortnight because the song is good but it should´ve been pre-released.

It wasn´t as successful as ME! and You Need To Calm Down during Lover era but it gave public and critics much better perspective on this album and also reminded everyone of Taylor´s songwriting powers. Never Be the Same Again by Melanie C featuring the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.
Not that the previous two singles from Melanie's debut solo album Northern Star were flops per se (both singles reached No. 4 in the UK) but since they didn't reach No. 1, Melanie's label Virgin was considering ending the promotional campaign for Northern Star but (after some drama of its own) Never Be the Same Again was picked as the third single and it debuted at No. 1 in the UK and also reached No. 1 in six other countries.
It also happens to be my favorite song and if it wasn't for NBTSA, I probably wouldn't know about Melanie since I was born long after the end of Spice Girls' reign over pop culture.

Remember when Jessica left SNSD on 30 September 2014 and the S♡NEs were fuming…that day was sad because SNSD were doing something that day and people were suspecting the 9 pleased ladies of SNSD instead of the 8 saddened girls of SNSD on that day due to Jessica Jung’s departure that fateful day. Fifth Harmony suffered from Camila Cabello’s December 2016 leave…and Girlicious had Tiffanie Anderson gone in 2009 due to their then new label Universal Music Canada deeming her “too urban” and this was racist especially because Chrystina Sayers is multiracial

Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani has to be an all-time great example. She followed one of the most beloved and successful pop albums of the 2000's with Wind It Up, an electro-pop/alternative-rap track with a fucking Lonely Goatherd sample from Sound of Music and excess moaning and vocal processing that made T-Pain sound like Andrea Bocelli by comparison. Several magazines called it the worst song of the year and even though it reached the Top 10, it plummeted like an anvil in the Grand Canyon immediately afterwards. She'd always had a kooky edge to her music, but this was WAY too much.
But then she followed through with a catchy, inoffensive Akon collab that fit right in with what pop radio listeners of 2007 wanted to hear and scored a Hollaback Girl-sized smash. Nothing off the rest of the album was that big, but it didn't really need to be since that one single was so huge and helped cement the idea that she wasn't some one-era wonder. I fully believe if not for this one song, she would not be anywhere near as well-remembered today as she is now

Wind It Up is bonkers and a great track. But 2006 was an era entirely dominated by a very specific sound. WIU was too weird for radio and critics were a lot less kind to female pop stars back then so naturally they went in when given the opportunity. It deserves reappraisal.

@@prettydvmb What are you talking about? Levitating, I'm Good (Blue), Blinding Lights, Stay, Cupid, that Shakira/Bizarrap collab, Dance the Night, Break My Soul, and so many other dance-pop songs were big hits in the 2020's. Hell, Ariana herself has had plenty of dance-pop hits (Break Free, Love Me Harder, Into You, etc.) that her fans still eat tf up. We Can't Be Friends isn't even that far off from that sound. Yes And just isn't really anything to write home about

Rated r was her best work. It was dark in tone cos the shit she went through with Chris and matched it to her music. Rude boy I feel should have been on loud and that’s why it was a single. Was a way to introduce loud only months later
Lover was a great album, but the singles made it fail. Even I didn’t fall in line with it till years later and I’m a swiftie

@@alexxquivelYes but HISS was heaaaaavily hyped because of the beef with Nicki Minaj i mean let’s be real the song is not strong or anything special except its a ‘good’ diss track. It is not a memorable #1 song like some of the #1’s that artists like Rihanna or Mariah have. The album is not talked about enough, it’s mid. But Megan is a good rapper! Just not a memorable album maker
